these stories are so creepy. that is so sad about the girl, if she hasnt registered for anything since then...chances are something happened. was it an area for rock climbing? being a recreational (non professional) rock climber, ive heard many stories of people who just grab gear and go out and die from not knowing what they were doing. maybe she got really injured and sombody came by and took her to a hospital and didnt get her purse and maybe she died in the hospital....wow, im just making stories up, but these things it really gets your imagination going. so many many many different things could have happened. please keep me posted of any updates.

i think we could arrange for a special stop near your neck of the woods for a tribute stamp if you would like. i'm sure that a stamp of her likeness would fit nicely on the bus for everyone to see.

may pam make it through the rough times ahead by thinking about the wonderful times from the past.

Quote Lots of b/w clip art images have shading. How do I make shading show up in the stamped image. What techniques do you use?

In general, I don't use that image!

There's a fundamental difference between "grayscale" and "B&W", but even a lot of truly B&W images have "shading" that consists of zillions of tiny lines, dots, or crosshatching. You can see the effect on some store-bought stamps, too. Somewhere between difficult and impossible to get to look right when hand-carving a stamp. It's a skill that I not only have not perfected, I really haven't even tried yet.

I once read some stuff on the Carving Consorteum website that involved using sandpaper, I think. There were some images there that were amazing.

One idea that I may take a shot at sometime: The idea of making white dots with a non-sharp piece of wire works so well and so easily (I have used it several times) that I've been thinking of trying it for a shading effect. Basically, take a straight pin and cut the point off and file it flat so it's not slipping into the rubber but rather punching a tiny bit of rubber ahead of it. It sorta compresses a bit of rubber the same size as the thickness of the pin down into the rubber, and it stays there rather than popping back up to flush with the surface. Then use this pin to punch a zillion dots in an area to sort of "lighten" that area from totally black. The more you punch, the lighter the area will look. With practice it may be possible to create different shades using either more pin pricks or different size pins. And to demonstrate real skill one could create a graduated shading, something that gets darker from one place to another by carefully spreading the dots.

Another method that would probably be less work would be crosshatching using a Stadtler 1V. You can make a very tiny groove with a Stadtler 1V. Make a whole bunch of them, parallel to each other. Then come back and make a whole bunch more at 90 degrees to the first -- or, for a different effect, not at 90 degrees but at some other angle. Cutting the second set of grooves is kinda odd because you're bouncing across the first set and gettiing all these little bits of rubber rather than one long hair. When done, the effect is a lot of little black dots in neat rows. Again, with skill you should be able to vary the shading by varying how close the little grooves are to each other.

With all the notifications being a little messed up this weekend I double checked open postals just to be sure I didn't miss any new ones and there was only 15 available for joining on the list. I wonder how come so few. It looked so strange to see them all fit on one page. :)

We had someone tell us that he proposed and she accepted at the place of our logbook and after they stamped in.

We have also had people note that they were celebrating birthdays, Mother's Day, anniversaries, etc. We love that.

We also had a message, "Sticky, sweaty, buggy...AWESOME". I think they stamped in during black fly season.

On the average day, we appreciate a state or city and state, date and if it is a busy box, time. It is always interesting to see how far apart in the day people stamp in. When we place a logbook, if we date and time the placement, people many times follow suit and time their stamping in as well.

Go to the My searches page. Pick Tracker from the search type dropdown. Make sure that open and limited are the only boxes checked under tracker status. Click Search. The list should come up. Then you can save the search in the top right hand corner. Then you can name your search and under that it asks if you want new notifications from your search click yes and you should be all set.

As far as I know you have to delete everyone then add them back. I was told to open another AQ window and copy and paste. It works great that way. I am really hoping someday Ryan adds a drag and drop feature to trackers!

Please please pretty please!!!

Well, he sort of did. But now it isn't so easy to "copy and paste" from one window to another after dropping everyone and every box. You now have to check the correct "button" from a search that pops up. At least this button is at the top of the list if you're trying to use the copy and paste. I actually prefer the old way.

I know the 6 rings I am in have ALL stalled, even the 2 I am running and I can't seem to get either of them back on track.

On top of everything else, the working conditions for both Dole and Chiquita employees are truly abysmal. In my Intro to International Relations course I show a film called "Life and Debt" that touches on this issue (though the film is actually about Jamaica). One student gave up bananas entirely after I showed it one semester.

allemeyn---you bring up some great points. My reaction came off the heels of a combination of having an extremely enlightening discussion with a reporter friend of mine and another friend--who were all were elected officials at one time. It is disgusting in the US how very often people "cave" to corrupt activities when they are IN positions of varying power to make a difference--instead of benefitting from payoffs and more. None of the 3 of us caved. It was extremely difficult to stand up to the threats and we all paid a price---and so did some of our children at times--but we all stood strong. It is frustrating when others not only cave but then actively engage and then benefit---sometimes greatly.

It also comes on the heels of having son who is a combat soldier fighting in Afghanistan where the same thing is going on with different crops---but it all leads to funding terrorism. Knowing weapons used to fire upon our troops and our nation one way or another is funded in these ways is a hard pill to swallow. American troops and NATO forces are trying to help educate these farmers about alternative crops---but none compare to the revenue the poppy crop provides to them---IF the Taliban doesn't intercede.... The living conditions of these farmers are horrendous. I worry about my son and our soldiers getting through these long and extended depoyments---yet they get to come home eventually (God willing!!) while the farmers are other citizens are stuck.

Having said all of that, you are 100% correct that these countries have all but hopeless situations. I do sincerely agree. My background is business and took a similar course in my undergrad days. It was one of the best courses. Thanks for bringing that perspective back into focus for me. What a conflicted situation---

Anyone know what that sticker is all about???

What happened to me when I listed a box yesterday (OZ Math Transmogrification) is that I accidentally skipped over the location information. That's not exactly true, I listed it as Memorial Park, Houston, TX in the location, but I needed to click basic and list it the old way with city, state, country.

So, although I had (I thought) input the location, it came back as mystery, mystery....so no one who gets notifications when I list a Houston box did on this one. I had to go in and manually fix it, but that didn't trigger a notification because it was a change, not a new listing.

I wonder if that happened to the person listing the box you site?
