Thank you Kirbert. Wonderful photo and my imagination is improved now! :D Of course, I have a ways to go on the carving part, but I am getting better ... 47 pieces of the white stuff later! Lots of "trash" but the kids at church love them! I am not yet getting good inking quality, but I think I have the idea, just not the knack yet. Thanks for all your help, K, and all the help of the other folks who just keep giving us learners tips. Course, frankly, at some level, we are all learners! +Peace! BS

Goldberry, thanks. What you said makes sense. And, those images are nice. I still think in b/w though. Color images make it harder for me to see the stuff needed to carve out. Well, and it could be that I just like the contrast of black and white a lot (in photos and carvings) or blue and white or ... two color. But, I do see what you mean on the artistic nature of the lines and dots. Mine are just not yet ... artistically arranged! Just dottie or liney! +Peace! BS

Letterbox Notifications Update
Board: Atlas Quest Announcements
Sep 30, 2007 8:12pm
Thread Board
Alas, those darned notifications were still causing me problems. Best as I can tell, it's not actually the code that mails out notifications that's working incorrectly, but rather I managed to corrupt the data about the latitude and longitude coordinates of the search in the database so, in a nutshell, it listed as being in the incorrect location.

But then it was additionally confusing because newly added or edited searches were listed correctly, and they were mixed in with the corrupted data. What to do? What to do?

Then I realized that I store the original search phrase. I'll just run the favorite searches through Atlas Quest--ALL of the searches--and look up the correct latitude and longitude coordinates for every search. Fix the whole lot of them. =)

So I've done that, and now I think the notifications are working correctly. If you find any boxes listed after RIGHT NOW that you should have gotten notifications for but haven't, please let me know. =) If you missed notifications earlier today, though, that problem should be fixed now.

I'd love to help you test this, Ryan. Could someone please plant a new box within 25 miles of my house so that I can see if my notification comes through?

When I try typing Q into the Add Postal Letterbox box, it gives me this: Postal box not found: Q. Why?

Because it's using the FULLTEXT index--which only indexes words with at least four letters. Words with three or fewer letters basically don't exist when it comes to searches.

If that's the only word in the search.... hmm.... well, that's a problem. =)

If they've prefixed the name with the name of the series, search for the series name and the Q box will come up.

Let me see what I can do for that particular postal search, though. I'll be back if I have anything intelligent to say. =)

do NOT look at how many edits it took me to do this.

I don't even have to look at the edits to know it would have taken a lot of them to get a table that complicated working correctly. I have more than my fair share of edits when I tried putting together the tutorial on how to make a pouch--which also uses a very complex table!

Those complex tables are very hard to get right the first time around. The syntax is really better suited for simple tables.

Won't stop us from abusing them, though, huh? ;o)

Come on up! We'd love to have you! I think when I checked earlier, we had 117 boxes within 25 miles. I'll be relisting another 7 tomorrow, and I know of another boxer that has some ready to go as well. I heard a fella up north refers to us as Little Connecticut. :)

I had a brilliant revelation (if I do say so myself). =)

Consider the fact that if you search for a box name with fewer than four letters, it will return absolutely nothing because there's nothing to match, right? I need the FULLTEXT index so you can find words anywhere in the name of a box, but it won't find those short words. The good with the bad, bad with the good and all that. I really need the FULLTEXT index, though, so the search can be done efficiently.

Instead of just ignoring it, though, I could set it up like the search used to work where it compared the search term to the beginning of the box name. I can't compare it to the whole box name--that's too inefficient and was what the FULLTEXT index was supposed to solve--but there's no reason I can't still search the beginning of a string which is still indexed!

So I've updated the code to examine your search string. If it's three letters or less, it will compare the search term to the beginning of the box name. If it's four letters or more, it'll run the search against the FULLTEXT index. The best of both worlds! =)

So do your Q search again. It should work now. ;o)

Once your search term reaches four or more letters, though, it will stop looking for matches at the beginning of the string and start using the FULLTEXT matching process.

So slick! =) Granted, it's totally a hack, but it's a COOL hack. At least I think so. ;o)

This could be fantastic! For an event, carve tons of smallish, easy stamps and glue to the zip line that holds the badgeholder plastic. Then, make a "Name tag" for each attendee that the greeter pins on the attendee, just before whispering "you've got cooties". The name in the badge holder is actually a slim logbook and the cootie stamp is right there attached. Everyone who attends will be infected.

I read the article and it appears that they were victims too.

Quote But when you have economic assets and workers in a dangerous area like that, some would say this kind of thing goes with the territory. They disclosed the payments to the justice department, so it's not like they were secretly trying to fund those groups.

I agree here. You have to wonder, I only know of Dole as an alternative. But don't they get their crops from the same locations? One would have to wonder if they are equally guilty or if they stood staunchly against the thugs and paid a heavy price for it. Is there any info on that?

I went to add Event Stamps to the Letterboxing PowWow 2007 and the 99 Bottles Tour: Taco Mac, Newnan events of 29 Sept., and I saw this "new" button: Add Exchanges

Holy cows and flying pigs, Batman!

One click gets you a list of all the people you had NOT exchanged with prior to the event... and a few more check-clicks gets you instantly-added exchanges to your Profile!

Wow! Thanks Ryan!

On top of everything else, the working conditions for both Dole and Chiquita employees are truly abysmal. In my Intro to International Relations course I show a film called "Life and Debt" that touches on this issue (though the film is actually about Jamaica). One student gave up bananas entirely after I showed it one semester.

Hey all,
Would like you all to keep in prayer a semi-retired (as in the hobby) letterboxer that is dealing with heavy issues in the family. They and their extended family has had a horrific event within the last couple of years, and the courts are drawing things out.
Please pray it will all be finished this week and justice be done,(the third trial commences this week) so the family can truly begin to attempt inner healing.
Also through all this divorce papers have been served.
Obviously this is not a pleasant thing to have to deal with.
My heart has been very heavy for some time knowing all this has been going on.
Pray that the Lord reigns, that new life and hope can shine into their life.
Thank you so much.

That's exactly how I felt just a few weeks back when my first plant was found for the first time! It is a very addictive feeling... I've got a few otehr brewing in my brain right now too.

Sadly, I live a little to far to come get Historic Hebron anytime soon... but if I'm ever in the area... (which may actually happen, since my best friend just moved to Georgia - and is bragging about 80+deg temps and swimming in outdoor pools.)
