Ryan, do you have any trails that you are planning to launch before 2021? If so do you have a rough eta? And about how many miles will it be?

I have been hiking them in order of length from shortest to longest. When I first started the AT wasn't an option. As you've added new trails I go back and snag the shorter ones that were newly added before going on with what was there.

Long story short I am trying, not sure how successful I will be, to be ready to hike the AT in 2021 from day one. 2020 has been such a hard year I want to do something great in 2021!

Many of my milestone hikes/ races were canceled. Can never get them back.

As much as I would love to do a through hike or even a total hike, I know realistically it isn't a possibility. I have done day hikes including standing at the southern terminus at sunset and hiking back out. It was so awesome to log into the register.

I'd like to get back on the PNT some time in the next week and finally finish that trail. I finished the first 700 miles last year but still have 500 miles left to complete. I'm not sure if I'll even be able to complete it this year--the end of the trail is currently still closed and inaccessible due to the pandemic. I'm kind of hoping it re-opens by the time I get there. And permits through the Olympics might be particularly challenging to get this year.... and that assumes nothing closes again!

So I will be hiking.... If I do manage to finish, it'll be a 1,200-mile trail. And even with a pandemic, there's no guarantee I'd finish. (I didn't finish last year, after all!)

So you'll just have to wait and see. If I finish, though, the trail likely won't be listed until September or October or something at the earliest.

Yeah, I remember that hike being cut short.

I have another trail suggestion down the road, no pun intended 😉:

The North Country National Scenic Trail is the longest in the National Trails System, stretching 4,600 miles across eight states from North Dakota to Vermont.

Sounds like the longest road walk of the bunch as well. ;o)

The Superior Hiking Trail overlaps the NCNST, though, so you can virtually walk a part of it already!

I didn't realize so much road walking.........not so fun.

I just figured, if you walked it, I could leave you trail magic and maybe meet you.

I already did that trail ;j cool beans.

Last year, pre-pandemic, I was planning on retiring and moving so I gave away my full size, high-end treadmill.
Didn't retire until October.
Suddenly I went from walking to work, walking at work and boxing, to sitting, more sitting and walking to the kitchen.
I still haven't moved, but I finally got a new treadmill. It doesn't have the fancy schmancy stuff I had before, but what the heck, I'm old and don't even pretend I can run anymore.
I got an under the desk, no elevation, mostly for walking treadmill.

Now to get back to walking more than between the kitchen and my favorite chair.

With so many people working remotely that seems to be the big thing now. I'd be interested to know how you like it as you keep using it.

The first thing I noticed is the bed being narrower than my old tm.
When I increase the speed I'm less precise with my heel-strikes.
Less room, width-wise, to touchdown.
Although I could get this one up to 8mph, I won't.
Being an under-desk style there are no uprights to touch for balance if I get a bit wonky.

I have a ski pole for balance correcting.

Now, this might seem weird; I hold the pole with my arms down by my side as one would when allowing your arms to swing naturally when walking.
The pole, having a pointy tip, grabs the carpet at about a 45o angle, and perpendicular to me.
This seems to give me a bit of stabilization while allowing my arms to swing naturally.

I can't read and walk.
I can't crochet and walk.
I can't use my laptop and walk.
I can watch tv, so that's what I do.

The ski pole sounds like a good idea. The fact that a lot of them don’t give you anything to hold on to is something I have wondered about. Unless they are under a desk I mean.

Watching tv is the best way to make the time pass. Happy walking!

I had the same issue. I used to listen to music and plan out a window quilts of all the past experiences here on the farm. When I stopped, I would write them down, while slowly doing cool down exercises. Those notes are still around here somewhere but.. ya know.

Question: Will your balance increase in time, I wonder? Sounds like you only should do what your body tells you to do. Nice to see people moving. :) It's hard up here in the snow and ice. Especially when you hate the cold. *brrr*

I have a slightly wider stance than normal, so the narrower the path, the more problems I have with balance.
Being that this tm is narrower than my other one, I need to be a bit more careful.
When I was walking to work, there wasn't a problem because I was either on a sidewalk or roadway.
Also, walking to work, I would acclimatize as the seasons changed.
We rarely hit 100oF in the summer and can go as low as -25 in the winter.
Now that I'm not outside much it takes longer to adjust.

As for winter, outside walking, I have cat-tracks for the slightly slippery days and boots with titanium spikes for the really icy days.
Summers I have frozen water which thaws as I travel.
Oh, and because it's citified walking, I almost always wear my "please-don't-kill-me" ensemble; reflective vest, hat and gloves.

Not much, really. Originally I had intended to do a much bigger update but never got around to finishing before I had to start my CDT hike.

Ryan - have you by chance hiked in Nepal yet? The hike up to Namche Bazar is a good one (and on to Everest base camp if you are feeling frisky...) starting off with a hair raising flight into Lukla, the most dangerous airport in the world. >:-)

Getting there is the only kind of expensive part. Once you’re there it hardly costs a thing.
Word of advice - don’t eat yak meat especially when you’re hiking at altitude. Go vegetarian.

It happened! I'm several months behind on my W4F logs. I tried to find the backdoor way to do this, even found this forum thread from 2014 but it doesn't work for me (just a guess but I would imaging there have been a few site updates since 2014).

Here is the "example" URL from the 2014 post:
www.walking4fun.com/my-walk/?logDate=2013-12-11;logSteps=%2B1+mile

When I try that (using a date that is less than 30 days ago - so I can edit it the "normal" way in case the result is not as expected), nothing seems to happen. No log entry for that date appears in My Walk
www.walking4fun.com/my-walk/?logDate=2021-10-8;logSteps=%2B1+mile

I also tried these URLs but they only seems to add entries to the existing forms (which I can do manually without needing to type the specifics into the URL). I still need to hit the "Save" button at which point I receive an error message if the date I used is >30 past (for example, a date in September 2021)
https://www.walking4fun.com/my-walk/actions/steps-edit.php?d=2021-09-07&trailId=16&steps=1
https://www.walking4fun.com/my-walk/actions/steps-add.php?d=2021-09-07&trailId=16&steps=1

Finally I tried amending the "old" URL with nomenclature from the newer URLs but that didn't work either:
https://www.walking4fun.com/my-walk/?d=2021-10-08&trailId=16&steps=1

Does anyone know the magic secret formula that isn't well past its Best Before date?

Thanks!
