Someone finally found one of my Guatemalan boxes after being neglected for four very long YEARS! =)
The biggest irony of all, if I understand it right, the finder only learned of letterbox just before leaving for Guatemala and that's actually her first find! Definitely not the type of box I'd recommend for people to cut their teeth on--looking for boxes that were last visited four years before don't tend to have high success rates to begin with--but it all worked out.
Now if only she can make it to Tikal and check up on those boxes for me as well.... ;o)

I just now discovered there is a message board for Guatemala and well... I was the girl that found that box! :) Interesting to find something was posted about it! I just wanted to say that Yes, yes I am utterly addicted to letterboxing now and the Guatemala and Honduras finds were a great way to start :)

*laughing* That's must be odd--finding a post about yourself posted the better part of a year ago. =) Not much activity on this board yet, but it'll happen. I'm kind of thinking I should get back to Guatemala in 2009. Thru-hike the PCT in 2008 and become fluent in Spanish for 2009. I'd probably post here more then, although I'd likely be talking to myself a lot. =)

I wish we had time to go to Tikal this year! Maybe next year!!! Glad we were able to find the one in Antigua! It's only a football field away! hee hee! It was a great find, I love seeing all the beautiful ruins. I hope you are able to go back in 2008/2009, maybe you can find the two new plants we did this year! Good luck in studying your spanish!

Those boxes haven't even had anyone try to find them, and considering they've been there for five years now, I'd expect some (if not all!) of the boxes to be missing by now. So don't get your hopes up TOO much. If I had to guess, I'd bet at least half of them are missing by now. Hopefully a couple have survived after all this time, though. =)

If you go to Advanced Search and change the Search Type in the upper right-hand corner to Area Search, you can choose from any country you want. These are the results that I got:

Ryan is on a 3 to 4 month leave of absence. He is Hiking from Florida Keys to Northern Georgia.
So he might not get this message before you leave. But there are many others here that may be able to help you.

I haven't planted anything in Guatemala City, but I do have an easy one you can get in Antigua. I also planted one at Lake Atitlan, but I wouldn't recommend it if you only have half a day. (It's been reported missing by one person who tried to find it to boot, though that doesn't necessarily mean it's definitely gone.)
As for the search not working, if you're doing a location-based search from Guatamala City, be sure to set the radius high enough to catch the boxes in Antigua and Lake Atitlan. =)
