Board: Why Did I Just Do That!?

Welcome to my new board! I'll start it off with this "Why did I just do that!?" moment:
Last night I was going to put the cap back on the pen I was using. It was one of those super fine point ball point pens with the tapered metal tip. Well, first of all, I was holding the cap in my left hand and the pen in my right hand. I was holding the cap lower than the pen and the tip of the pen was pointed down, so in order to put the cap back on I had the bring the pen down in a somewhat stabbing motion to get it into the cap. The second problem is that I wasn't looking at what I was doing, I was watching TV instead. So guess what happened? That's right, I managed to stab my own finger with the metal tip of the pen, I completely missed the cap, and the metal point went into my finger. Ouch! I pulled the pen out and my finger was bleeding, I was worried that ink would get into my blood so I forced it to bleed for a bit. Today my finger is all sore and bruised, all because I was too interested with the TV show. I don't even remember what I was watching! =oP
I guess I took the "inky fingers" saying to a whole new level!
Well I guess this is the group...

My mom thought I should share this with letterboxers after I told her I shared another story... This sounds like the group for it. I lock my keys frequently in the car. It happens at least once a year. My cell phone is a pay as you go phone, but I can talk to people using the same provider for free if I pay a $1 a day.

In July, I got a new car and only had one key. Later that month, I was driving around looking at cemeteries (about a week after already having an interesting time at a cemetery with a creepy guy), trying to find a large one to plant a mystery letterbox at in a county that I am quite familiar with but I don't live in. I was trying to locate 2 cemeteries, one sounded like it would be decent sized but I decided to take some side roads to see what I would stumble on. Anyway, the road I was on came to an end and there was no street sign for the road I was turning on and then I see this largish cemetery and think oh this will probably be perfect and it's probably the one cemetery I am looking for.
So I get things ready and prepared, take the keys out of the engine, prepare the box just in case. Get the bag and get out of the car. Lock the door and slam... oh no locked the keys inside. Thankfully I have my cell, but oh wait I only have a dollar left on it. So since my parents have the same cell phone company, I call them. My dad is the type who will get all panicky sometimes and he's not to fond of me driving around all the time looking for letterboxes and so forth. So I call my mom, but my dad answers. I said that I need to talk to mom and he said she's in the bath and he said is it important and I said yes. So he gave her the phone.
"Mom, I'm locked out of my car in a cemetery and I don't know where I'm at."
She told me later that as soon as I said that, she jumped out of the bathtub. I then continued, I think I am at this cemetery but I am not sure... I don't recall seeing signs for it, but there is a park over there. She said well call AAA. That is when I said that I used my last dollar to call her and I reminded her that I can call her and others on ATT for free the rest of the day, but calling everyone else costs .10 cents a minute and my purse is locked up inside. So she gets a robe on and gets a pad of paper as I walk over to the park and read the sign on the park. I tell her the name of the park and again tell her what cemetery I believe I am in and she makes the call to AAA.
I am not really sure I want to use this cemetery anymore, and decide to look around just in case. I decide to hide my letterboxing stuff under the car. That is when a van pulls into the cemetery. I am very tempted to ask them where the heck I am, but shyness and the embarrassing thought of asking them where I am at prevents me from flagging them down. Instead I pretend to look at graves and they pause near me and I look at them and they are this older couple with these stern faces... and then it hit me - they probably think I am some teenager (I've been told I look between 18-21) here to vandalize their cemetery. They didn't say anything and left.
So I walk around this cemetery and none of the names really stand out. I am about to head back to be near my car and out runs the most adorable black cat. It's very friendly and by the time I talked with my mom again, I told her that I am not alone, a friendly black cat is cuddling me. She laughed at this and she confirmed I was at the cemetery I believed I was at according to the AAA woman. She said that a guy will be there shortly. Thankfully this guy was having a slow day, because when he did show up it took forever to get the car unlocked. I got my stuff from under the car and told him that why I was out here was for a scavenger hunt like thing but I don't think I will plant it here and he shook his head no.

Anyway that's my embarrassing story...

That sounds a lot like what happens with my mom. She locks her keys in her car at least once a year too. Half the time she calls me to have me go to their house to get her spare keys and drive them to wherever she is so she can get in. I have suggested, more than once, and not entirely jokingly, that she should wear a necklace with a spaer key on it =o)
I'm glad that you were able to get AAA out to let you into your car though! =o)

I used to lock my keys in the car annually as well. calling my husband was a pain, and he let me know how much of a pain it was. then, when my oldest was about 1 year old we were on our way home to SC from DE. I locked us out of the car at a gas station/diner in VA. After sitting in the diner for 2 hours waiting for a locksmith with an anxious baby wanting to toddle around I learned some valuable lessons:
1. some people still do kind things for strangers in need of help. the owner was working that day and fed me lunch "on the house" and told me to:
2. get a spare key made and attach it to the back of my license plate. Even if your vehicle has to have a special key (with a microchip in it) to start the engine, any plain key will open the door.

I'm notorious for not remembering names. It takes me forever to get it down pat. And of course, if I'm aware that the name just isn't reaching the front of my brain, it makes it worse. If I quit trying, sometimes it will pop right up. And, even though I'm a granny, and you might say...just old age...nope! I've been like that always. For instance...

I had known my husband for almost 2 years before we married. We were "best friends" and he was my "brother-n=-the-Lord." For the first year and half, I would have laughed if someone suggest that we date. Ewww! Date my "brother"? Well, God worked that out in a mysterious and wonderful way, but that's not for this post.

Anyway, shortly after we were married, we came across an old friend of mine and I was going to introduce them. No problem with her name, but then I said, "This is my husband ...????_____???? and for the smallest moment, my mind went blank on his name! I really think it was such a miniscule period of time that she didn't notice, but boy, I sure did!!

We have a tiny letterbox (a personal traveler) in a "hidden key" case that we put on the back of our license plate when we're at events. Once we totally forgot it was there and discovered it over 6 months later. We drive a LOT in many different areas and it never moved. You might think about hiding a key there.

what I did is got a FLAT key made (no bulky plastic on the top). I used a drill to make the hole in it a little bigger, then unscrewed the license plate and put the key on the screw behind the plate, then screwed it back in. it couldn't fall off, and it being so hidden noone could know it was there.

hope this helps!

I lock my keys frequently in the car. It happens at least once a year.

I've locked the keys in my car once in my entire life. Definitely not something I do "frequently," but I did have an unusual way of getting the car unlocked. I was in a busy parking lot at the time it happened--there was a Civil War reenactment going on, and people were everywhere. So I decided to start asking around if someone had a screwdriver I could borrow.

The reason being is because I suspected that there were spare keys hidden behind the back license plate. I bought my car used, and when I moved up to Oregon from California, I had to change the plates. When I took off the old plates, that's when I discovered a set of keys hidden behind them. Interesting, I thought, and I assumed the keys were spares for the car. What else would they be for? I didn't actually try them, however. Just thought it was interesting and figured I may as well leave them there. Why not? They weren't hurting anything.

Fast forward a year or so when I locked my keys in the car. I could call AAA, but wouldn't it be faster to retrieve the presumed spare keys from behind the license plate? I couldn't exactly get the license plate off with my fingernails, though. I needed a screwdriver. So I started asking around if anyone had a screwdriver in their car that I could borrow.

I found someone who did have one, and I explained about locking my keys in the car but that there were spares behind the license plate. He looked at me skeptically--like it was the craziest story he'd ever heard, but went ahead and let me borrow the screwdriver and watched as I started taking off the back license plate of my car. I know he was thinking I was up to no good, but the license plate came off and sure enough, there was a set of keys.

The guy seemed to perk up when he saw the spare keys, saying, "Well, at least I know it really is your car--there's no way a stranger would have known about keys hidden behind the license plate!" All the time I was thinking, "I really, really hope these ARE spare keys for the car and not spare keys for the house of a previous owner or something...."

But it unlocked the door of the car. Whew. =) I screwed the license plate back on and returned the screwdriver, and continued on with the rest of my day.

The irony is that if I had locked my keys in the car before I moved to Oregon, I would have never known about the spare hidden behind the license plate. It's all about timing.

Good thing they did work for the car. While reading it I thought, oh no, they are going to be the keys for something else.

Don't feel too bad, you're not the only one that's ever done something like that! I am also horrible with names, somebody can tell me their name and 2 seconds later I'll already have forgotten, but be too embarrassed to ask again so soon.

A day after my son was born, I was on my way down the elevator to visit him in the NICU. First of all, another woman in the elevator asked me, "are you having your baby today?? Me too!" Umm... no... already had the baby! Tummy doesn't look normal again after one day! That was embarrassing for both of us. After I told her I already had the baby and was on my way to see him, she said, "congratulations! What's his name?"

My mind went blank. I just stared at her going, "it's.... uh.......... ummmm....." Finally my husband saved me and said, "his name is Kade." I felt like such a bad mother, couldn't even remember my own son's name! LOL

oh dear.... where do I start??....

The most recent was when I was replacing the drain pipe in our upstairs bathroom which was leaking. The sink was dated back to the 50's so I thought I would make it a worthwhile project and replace that at the same time. It was at the end of the day when I came upon the issue that the parts I purchased would not fit into the existing plumbing fixed into the wall... $@*& !!! (as with most plumbing self-do-it projects). I placed a bucket under the sink for the night to drain the sink into so it could still be used. The next day I got the needed pipes and fittings to adapt the new sink to the wall, set the work area up, pulled the half full bucket out and..... EMPTIED IT INTO THE SINK!!!

Another moment today... I'm not a woman who dresses up much for anything. Just grab my clothes, throw them on, pull back my hair, and go. So I did that today. First had to drop off some papers at the office and have my license copied. Went there and felt kind of a draft... oh no maybe I have a hole reached back and felt material ok, but to be safe I will pull down my jacket. Went in did everything. Then went to the library for an hour, still the same thing didn't feel anything, and pulled down my shirt and jacket just in case made sure it was long. Then went to a small store, to the credit union, came back here, used the computer for well over an hour or two and then I finally feel it... I take off my jeans and there is a 3 inch hole in them. Oh no... please I hope nobody noticed.

Bless your heart, I think everyone has had that happen to them at one time or another and you feel so bad when you find out.

Now I don't feel as bad when it happens to me anymore because I think of what my aunt did.......She has to have everything so so and never will put her skirt on until she gets ready to leave to keep it from wrinkling. On this day my uncle was in a hurry and rushing her that they put their coats on and ran out of their home to get to church......Just before church starts my aunt leans over and begs my uncle to leave....You know how men are...after many questions they got up and left because that morning in the rush of things she forgot to put her skirt on.

It could have been alot worse at least you was 99% covered. Hey, now a days it is in fashion with the kids.....most of them if they noticed probly thought you was hip.

I caused myself another minor embarassment the other day and I decided to share.
I was at the new house that my man and I just bought. We have a very large overstuffed leather chair in our living room and the chair has a large ottoman in front of it. We also happen to have slippery hardwood floors. Well my roommate, Hank, was laying on the loveseat and I went to go sit on the chair, but I was lazy and didn't want to move the ottoman first. I went to flop down in the chair, but I didn't pay enough attention to where I was flopping down and I landed exactly between the chair and ottoman. The ottoman went flying straight ahead of me, the chair went back a little and I landed with a very loud and decidedly ungraceful 'thud!' on the floor. I also screamed a little because I was startled. Hank, of course starts laughing uncontrolably and I slink away into my bedroom...Oops!

This sounds like a great group for me, because I have moments where I constantly ask myself why did I do that? I often feel this way alot, sometimes when I am speaking about something and then I speak or put in my two cents then I usually end up saying something completely wrong or stupid...then I get so embarrassed.

I once locked my keys in my car when in line for an oil change, ironically I told my friend with me to be sure to get your keys out of his car so he wouldn't lock them in and what do I do, yes lock my darn keys in the car! Talk about embarrassing.
