Buffets

Sound off on your issues with buffet restaurants. Here is my short list.

1. Last seafood buffet I was at was pretty clean (i thought) and well maintained. Then of course I went to the restroom to wash off the sticky crab and butter. I man who had just finished voiding left the bathroom without washing. Watched him go directly to the buffet grab a plate off of the stack and head for the ladles.

2. Thank God for sneeze guards, but of course they don't work for children.

3. Children - I have watched them fingering multiple things before selecting one item.

4. Children who are too small to control the ladles as intended and have their hand just above the ladle scoop. The next person would then put that portion into the food.

That is my quick list of buffet issues.

Any comments on the five second rule?

The rule is worthless without qualifying statements. For instance, the 5-second rule might apply to most items dropped in a kitchen, but what about while hiking on a trail? As a general rule of thumb, the further away you are from the source of your food, the more time you have to pick it up off the ground. In the backcountry, it might be a 30-second "rule."

It also depends on what you drop. If you drop M&M's, it could be an "overnight" rule. If you accidentally spit out your gum when someone tells you something funny, it's gone. That should never go back in your mouth again.

A blanket "five-second rule" is pretty worthless without qualifying statements, though. =)

Conditions definitely impact time. However, whether it is 5 seconds or 10 minutes if bacteria, germs, etc are present in what the food touches it is contaminated either way.

If it is a "push", arm or shoulder works for me otherwise the towel I used for drying my hands stays with me and then after I have the door open, its a quick dunk to the basket - but my best way is exit when someone else is handling the door!!! Also, I like to get my paper towel BEFORE I wash my hands rather than using a dispenser after I have washed. And I LOVE the hands free bathrooms the best!

Does anyone else have better methods????

Sounds like my routine. Like to use the dipenser handle to have the paper hanging but don't tear it off until after finishing the wash. Other than that looks very similiar.

Some places are catching on and have started to put trashcans near the doors.

The newest rest areas in Virginia have a button on the wall about elbow or shoulder height that automatically opens the doors. Very nice.

From listening to the news this week (and previously too), they are certainly gearing up for massive vaccinations for the Swine Flu which according to the reports, will hit this upcoming season.

I put an email out to our Fire Chief. He usually procures the innoculations for us City employees and I added the H1N1 to the inquiry list. Sadly with the budget restraints, this may not happen this year but will make an appt. for the Dr. as soon as I hear should they not be available to us this year!

Shoneys. Which has some really good potato soup when it is fresh. Was waiting and here came a working with a very tall stack of bowls all leaning against her shirt/apron. Not wearing any gloves is stacking them about 5 per time with her fingers down inside the top bowl of each set of five.

Not sure where to post about this. Does anyone have any experience with this disease? There is alot of information online and all but would like to talk to someone who might have more personal knowledge.

My son was put in the hospital 2 days ago from something he has been fighting for a couple of weeks. No one seems to know whats wrong with him. Long story but he fits all the symptoms of RMSF except the rash, ab pain and red eyes.

We are currently waiting on tests for Lyme Disease and West Nile but he doesnt fit them as much as RMSF. We just asked for this test tonight so they probly wont do anything until tomorrow.
