I personally feel like, why should we reinvent the wheel? The central location seemed to work exceptionally well for everyone and I rather enjoyed the dorms and area where it was held. I know many people complained about the food and that's something that can be addressed, but why not just hold it there again?

With L&B in the Northeast, the potential letterboxing cruise in the Northwest and a huge annual (sort of) event in the Southeast, it seems like a logical choice. Plus the Southeast is MISERABLE in the summer and I would truly dislike to be out boxing for hours in July.

Just my .02 :)

i have nothing against the central location - Missouri is even on my "Stalker List of States to Box and Plant In". Having thrown a number of church events, and other large nonprofit events over the years however, i know just how much it takes the onsite crew to prepare. That's the problem. It's a LOT. Of. Work.

i have absolutely no problems helping. i was just a leeeetle too late for LB Con, in starting to box. i like planning and plotting. what i don't like is large LARGE groups of people, especially for extended periods of time. Really and truly, consider me in, whoever decides they want to do this.

I think you would do a great job in planning it! What do you consider large though? LB Con was around 500 people, and most of them were there for the whole weekend.

Even though I am not centrally located, if there is anything I can do to help just let me know. I love putting events together.

If I remember correctly the first LB Con was postponed a year or two because of the first LnB. The original idea for a Con was to move it around each year so that more people could attend and the first one was centrally located to get the most people for the first time. Personally I like St. Louis. If I weren't the only active boxer in Arkansas I might be tempted to try to have it here. There is the issue of summer heat though. About all I can do is offer suggestions and moral support to the cause.

Is anyone wanting to do another LBCON? I suggest we have it again in the midwest somewhere. It's been a while since anyone has posted on this board, so i'm just seeing what kind of response i'll get. This summer will be 5 years since the first LBCON. Just sayin!

There was some talk a couple of years ago but it died for lack of a host city.

The original planning committee approached St. Louis because it was a central location and an area without a lot of active boxing. A nearby airport was another criteria, I believe. If you are interested in setting something up, MO UR4Me would be the boxer to contact, as she did much of the local planning.

I would go no matter where it's held! From what I remember, the Con was to be held first in the midwest and then alternating on the left and right coasts. I think this summer might be too short of notice to put anything together, even though it is the 5 year anniversary. :(

St. Louis was the first location because it was the mot centrally located with good travel access. The Con was then to be held in a location that would be convenient for others. It could even be held on the south coast.

The thing that killed it I think was the fact that no one wanted to be the one to plan it. So they didn't offer their city as a host city. It's much to big of a project for one person to take on other wise I'd offer to hold it in Little Rock.

what you need is one central organizer, then a person to run each committee, then lots of people on each committee.

the committees you need are:

Accommodations (this includes sleeping, meeting places, bathrooms)
Boxing (as in boxes themselves, gathering, planting, regathering after the event, sending home; table tops, event boxes, exchanges, HIPS, LTC spot, raffle, anything i've forgotten)
Entertainment (what to do when not boxing)
Food (and water. lots of water. lots of food. boxers eat a lot for some reason)
Publicity
People Moving (parking, walking, from one spot to another)

i'm going to suggest we might want to think about a college campus (relatively inexpensive in the summer, maybe) with a cafeteria for food and housing. Many allow you to bring your own linens. Kind of like camping, only with a shower. There are very few campgrounds that will let you descend with 300-600 people at any time of the year, let alone spring/summer/fall.

Yes, an airport close would be good.

Contacting Choi and Travelers 4 would be a good start, to see what we're leaving out - or anyone on the L&B committee. Also, thinking of holding this sometime say, 2-2.5 years from now would be good, because that spaces it a bit from L&B -if that's what you want to do.

Know that i will most likely not come to this one, either. i am not a fan of huge crowds.

A few of us tinkered with the idea of hosting near Niagara Falls, but we didn't get past settling on the university. I think there was trouble communicating with the residence people.

The Con was held at a college in St. Louis, and I think it worked out great for exactly those reasons. Plenty of places to sleep, lots of spots to hide event-only boxes, etc. I wholeheartedly second that idea, with the caveat that since it will be during the hottest time of year it should be at a location with a mild climate. St. Louis while we were there was mid-70s, sunny and gorgeous. I would not like to be traipsing around all day every day at UCF in Orlando, for example lol.

wimp!! LOL where's your sense of adventure???

well, if that's the case, then Little Rock that time of year would be out, too. Hot and sticky. so would anywhere south of St. Louis.

So, any northern states want to take up the challenge?? Maybe north/midwestern ones??

I don't think it's necessary to rule places out until a date is set. If someone wants to plan it, they can pick the date based on their climate. True, most families prefer summer because kids are out of school but June usually isn't too bad yet in many parts of the country. But if someone wants to plan it and chooses not to do summer, isn't that still better than nobody planning it at all? I'd love to do something like that around here but like shiloh, I'd have no local help to plan something that big.

I'd be up for helping plan. I was involved in the early stages of planning the first one but had to back out because of school. But now that I'm done with all that learning I'd be interested again =)

Sacramento is not the best in the summer, and though there are lots of boxers in Northern California, not sure how many would be up for planning a major event like this. I do feel like it could be pulled off somewhere on the West Coast though as there are plenty of active boxers.

Yup. We were looking at colleges in Buffalo and Niagara Falls. The only one big enough looked to be the University at Buffalo, and the event guy I spoke with and toured the campus with kept promising to send me information, costs etc., and then just blew me off. Or forgot. It was really irritating.

Though perhaps if he was that incompetent with me, he was that incompetent with everyone, and it would be worth trying again. I'd be willing to, but more likely for LBCon3 than LBCon2, I already know that I will be spending a significant portion of July 2015 in Salt Lake City, and the prep for that trip is going to keep me on the hop all next spring.

So. . . .

we have a possibility for LBCon 3 in western NY and maybe LBCon 2 somewhere out west.

any takers?? Buehler?? Buehler??

i am good at coming up with lists and organizing things, just not all that enthralled with the idea of hanging out with 300 people. Or 100 people. or, truth be told, more than about 30 of you at a time. 3 of you would be good.

I kept seeing that this board had messages on it but was afraid that if I opened it up, I wouldn't have time to adequately respond - sorry it has taken me so long!

The university setting (USML) was perfect, especially the lodging. Being able to stay in dorms with showers and eat dorm food was great. TM's committee ideas are right on, although we actually had a lot more jobs than that. There is a LOT that has to be done locally; we had to go down there a zillion times, to check out the dorms, measure the meeting rooms, of course find hiding spots, figure out a nightboxing area, check out the area hotels to see if the area seems safe, sign papers, bla bla bla.

(Just so you're not thinking that St. Louis is pleasant in July, it was a total MIRACLE that the weather was so nice. Last year it would have been 109. I totally agree that the hosting city should plan according to their own weather and activities; for instance, don't have it the same week as some other huge convention or sporting event is there.)

While I think it would be best to have it somewhere else, so that others can attend, we probably now have the people here to pull it off. Except that if we used the same location (which also had Metrolink transit from the airport), hiding spots would be about the same too. A nightboxing time in the exact same cemetery just wouldn't be as fun...

MORE IMPORTANTLY, however, I think we need to consider the purpose of a CON. What is a CON supposed to be in everyone's mind? The 2009 one was mostly different from a regular event in that it was more about education and vendors. There were w number of classes, which could be done anywhere. But we had some awesome vendors who brought vanfuls of stuff for us to buy. When we've had this conversation in years past, those same vendors were not able to make the trip. There are other vendors out there, I'm sure, but that might be the place to start. Or perhaps there is some other factor that would make a CON different from a regular event. I just went to L&B, which was totally and completely awesome. From a planning perspective, it required about the same stuff, but it was more about finding letterboxes (and meeting others, of course).

Phew, well that didn't take as long as I thought it might... thanks to Shiloh for having already summed it up!

We could easily have done this 6 or 7 years ago when there were a multitude of active boxers in Central Ohio. Now there are a lot fewer. Would you mind to AQ mail me privately?
