Does anyone have experience with their cat not being interested in small animals? My dear, sweet Sati has absolutely no desire to eat my mice...not that I want her to. However, during the 5 years that she has had me, I've had a plethora of rodents in my home and not once has she showed the slightest interest in playing with, torturing or eating them. In fact, she usually runs away from them. When I take them out to play it is as if she doesn't even see them. Last I checked, this is extremely odd behavior for a cat. Her killer instinct is nonexistent. When I change my goldfish's water she will drink out of the container where Gina is without so much as batting an eye. Could she be a vegetarian?

Well, no, she isn't a vegetarian. Cats are carnivores. However, my cat also shows little to no interest in chasing or killing much of anything. He thinks he could get a bird and squirrels drive him nuts, but forget anything like mice, bugs, lizards, etc. Of course, he is also a big wimpy boy--most bugs scare him. I just think some domestic cats get used to their lives of leisure and luxury and could care less about wasting their energy chasing anything.

I think that your cat nows that the mouse is also your pet (just like her) so she will not harm him. I had a cat like that...I will have to find the pictures...he would "play" with my gerbils while I cleaned the cage. THey were in a shallow box and he would sit in there with them and let them crawl all over him! He also liked to go into the Guinea pig's cage and sit with him. This cat knew me and my pets, not once did he chase after my finches or canaries when they escaped. Some cats just KNOW. (And you are lucky to have one!)
I have lots of cats now and there are very few that I would trust with any of my current small/feathered pets...of course I have a family now so I am not as close to my cats as I once was! For the most part, all the animals live in our house in relative harmony. Cats, birds, Degus, tortoise, dogs, kids and adults. LOL! Terrio

Yes. My cat just walks by bugs. It's like he doesn't even notice them. (He probably doesn't, anyway)

Currently, I have 2 cats, both female. Tigger is almost 16, mostly sedentery(sp?), and Satine is almost 7 and quite active. I'm thinking about adopting a male kitten (WHY do I go to the Michael's next to the PetSmart?!).

Here are my thoughts: a younger cat would give Satine a playmate and maybe keep her from tormenting Tigger. I've also heard that 3 cats can be a good balance. But I don't want Tigger to feel ganged up on. Thoughts on the pros/cons of 2 cats vs. 3 cats?

Another consideration: the kitten I was playing with was in a cage with another kitten listed as his brother. I could take 1 more cat, but 2 more would be problematic. Is it cruel to split them up?

I think it would be OK to adopt one kitten. Sounds like the active cat would like a playmate and might quit tormenting the older one. Based on my experience, don't worry about splitting up brothers. When they get a little older they would have grown apart anyway. They're not like humans in this regard. Just my 2 cents. -Rose

I hope you're right. :-) I called Second Chance this morning, and will be bringing Copper home tomorrow. (Lots of preparing to do tonight!)

In addition to setting up a room for him to start in, I think I'm going to get a couple of those Feliway plug-ins: one for his room, and one for the main area where my 2 older cats are. Has anyone had luck with those?

No advice since my kitties have always been "onlys" (Ashes for 21 years and now we've had Pahli for almost a year!) but wanted to send you hugs and best wishes and I'll be looking for the photos!! I love the name Copper!

I would love to hear about anyone's experience with these as well. I just ordered one thanks to the stupid roommate.

I have two cats - both female - two years apart. The older cat never really adjusted to the addition, which was six years ago. The older one is more timid, so she ends up running away from the little one, even though the younger one is not aggressive at all. After a couple of years. the older one started pulling her fur out, hiding, and generally acting very nervous all the time. We brought some catnip out, and it has completely changed her demeanor. She gets a little stoned, and then she's more relaxed and braver for the rest of the day! She has reclaimed her territory, and they're both happier now.

I hae used the Feliway spray and it seemed to help a little. I hope all is going well with the new addition. Introduce them right and you will probably have no trouble. Kind of depends on the cats' demeanor. Remember, another cat, add another litter box! Terrio in WI

My cat is totaly different. I brought home the class pet (which was a gerbil) some how the cage door was left open. One day I found Oreo the gerbil dead. It was so sad.

I have a Chartreuse (cat) that loves to play fetch. She has a little attention span problem - halfway through fetching it, she sometimes forgets where she's going with it - but she eventually returns to her task. She'll go get her toys from another part of the house too. Her favorite feather may have been left upstairs, under a bed - but when she's ready to play, she'll go get it. Really cute!

We have several cats that either fetch or play catch! It is pretty fun to watch. My daughter's cat used to go into her little drawer on the bathroom counter to get a hairband so she could play with him...that was when she was in college. Even if she turned the drawers to the wall he would get in and take out a hairband to have her zing it against the wall for him to return. Terrio

Both of my cats do to some extent. My older kitty loves fetch and is pretty good about it. She started out fetching balled up post-it notes, but then progressed to twist ties.

My younger kitty does play (twist ties), but he is severely ADD so it only ever lasts about 2 fetches. Plus he's not so good at actually bringing the item back. Hmm. Maybe it's not an ADD thing but a boy/girl thing:)

Mine plays with twist ties also, but really loves the plastic band you pull off the cap of a gallon of milk!

My cats LOVE those too! They love how they can bat them around on our hardwood floors. :) It's really cute to watch, but I have to be careful or they'll eat them. :P

Yes. When we travel in our teardrop trailer Milpol Kitty comes also. She has a halter and has one of those retractable leashes. She's not very good at following clues but is always interested in the box.

I have thought about bringing a cat along with me, but both of the felines in my life are very much indoor cats. My Dakin is 14 and she has had health problems. She would probably have a heart attack if I did that. The other kitty, is technically not my cat. Not sure how Tom would feel about taking Terra letterboxing with me, if I can even get her out the door.

If Terra was in a pouch that I had fastened to me, it would definitely fit with my trail name!

My kitties have not tried traditional letterboxing, but they are both VERY helpful when it comes to opening postals (they chew the packaging tape), and they love to assist in the making of LTCs (especially a recent one that involved feathers). Other things they've been very useful for are sniffing out any smells on any letterboxing-related items I bring home, testing the durability of my letterboxing supplies, and providing moral support while carving stamps. And they chew on the corners of my logbooks. I'm not sure how this helps, but they keep doing it so I assume it's doing something. ;)

My cat's favorite part of letterboxing is when I sew logbooks - she's crazy about the long thick thread I use! (Warning to anybody who hunts my boxes or gets a PLB from me - if the logbook is homemade, it probably has cat saliva on it.)

I fear the day when someone who is horribly allergic to cats comes anywhere close to me. I'm ALWAYS covered in cat fur and all of the corners of my logbooks have been chewed. :D
