In 6 years of book club, A Confederacy of Dunces was the only book I couldn't get through, and we've read some tough ones. I think that's either a love it or hate it book.

I first discovered this gem about 25 years ago, and have read it half a dozen times. And it makes me laugh every single time... one of my very favorites!!
Top 5 books of 2012

Okay, I'll start this year.
What were the best five books you read during 2012? Only include those that were published in 2012 (or late 2011).
Mine were:
1. Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi (young adult [high school]/sci fi/post-apocalyptic/romance/action)
2. Legend by Marie Lu (young adult/sci fi/dystopian)
3. Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn (mystery/psychological)
4. The Chaperone by Laura Moriarty (historical fiction)
I don't have a 5th favorite. Most books I read were either published pre-2012 or not good enough to make a top recommendation.
Looking forward to seeing your lists!

The Night Circus (Fall 2011)
The Fault in our Stars (YA)
Gone Girl
Defending Jacob
Most of the ones I remember enjoying were pre-2012.
I think I need to take a page from Amanda's book and keep a list this year!

1. The Chaperone and
2. Gone Girl as already mentioned and
3. I am Half-Sick of Shadows by Alan Bradley, Part of the Flavia de Luce series which I adore
4. Believing the Lie by Elizabeth George, I am a big fan of hers and I liked her YA novel too, The Edge of Nowhere
5. If Walls Could Talk by Lucy Worsley, really interesting and well done for a nonfiction book reminded me of At Home by Bill Bryson

Yeah, I was pretty pissed off at the main character when I started and I contemplated stopping with that bad taste right away.

Here are my top 5. Not because they are necessarily the best books written but they are at the top of the list for books I enjoyed reading from 2012.
Wizard Undercover - KE Mills
Whispers Underground - Ben Aaronovitch
The Far West - Patricia Wrede
Ashes of Honor - Seanan McGuire

Thought I'd go back to my Goodreads list to see what I'd read & how I rated books. Discovered a few things. First, I'm as useless at rating books as I am at rating letterboxes. Almost everything had a 4. Not sure how I decided the few that got 5. Also, I still seem to be reading mostly YA fiction. Oh well. Now to try to find which ones were new books...
Lone Wolf (Jodi Picoult)
The Wedding Quilt (Jennifer Chiaverini)
The Forgotten Affairs of Youth (Alexander McCall Smith)
Out of Sight, Out of Time (Ally Carter--Gallagher Girls #5)
Lost December (Richard Paul Evans)
The Road to Grace (Richard Paul Evans--The Walk #3)
*Snow in Summer: The Tale of an American Snow White (Jane Yolen)
The Limpopo Academy of Private Detection (Alexander McCall Smith)
Crossed (Ally Condie--Matched #2)
Happy Accidents (Jane Lynch)
*Between the Lines (Jodi Picoult, Samantha van Leer)
The Wishing Spell (Chris Colfer)
*The Inn at Rose Harbor (Debbie Macomber)
*The Lost Years (Mary Higgins Clark)
Beyond Courage: The Untold Story of Jewish Resistance during the Holocaust (Doreen Rappaport)
Off Balance: A Memoir (Dominique Moceanu)
The Mark of Athena (Rick Riordan)
*Son (Lois Lowry)
Okay, that seems to be pretty much ALL the "new" books I read during 2012. Thought I'd leave it all there for variety. Bear in mind that I get most of my books from the library, and the ones that usually attract my attention are the ones on the "new arrivals" shelf. If it's an author I know and love, I grab it. Otherwise I'll tend to read a bit before I take it out. I'm going to try to go back and star my favorite 5 from this list...
That was hard! I changed my mind a few times. Top 10 would have been easier!!

Hello friends, I was just curious as to what everyone is reading these days.
I have devoured all of Jodi picoults books and I am looking for a new author of similar style. I like that she is thought provoking and interesting. Anyone reading Jeffrey Archers Clifton series. The newest book just came out and I am anxious to get my nose into it.
Lately I've been reading fluff books lately. Mostly Nancy Thayer, Barbara Delinsky, Jane Green and Elin
Hilderbrand.

This series starts with the book "Only time will tell". I am surprised that this is such a long series. I believe this is book 6. It's not his usual thing. But they are holding my interest!

Have you read anything by ?Elizabeth Berg. I love all of her books. Not exactly " ripped from the headlines" like Jodi Picout, but she deals with families and relationships over time. I love her stuff

Who has read this? I just finished it and I am reeling. It was so realistic yet thrilling at the same time. I don't usually read psychological thrillers ... but I just borrowed 2 more. What are your favorites. (Besides Stephen King. He scares me!! Lol)

And, she's an active letterboxer, on AQ! I would encourage her (if she sees this) to tout her book here... it's DEFINITELY hobby-related, and looks awesome!

Reminds me of the map which comes with
_Be Expert With Map and Compass_
a book on how to use a compass.
I unfolded the map that comes with the book. The coordinates somehow seemed familiar.
The map of an area about 30 miles from where I live.

Part of me misses the days before GPS. I used to belong to a backpacking group. One person would get a topo map and hurl a dart at it from across the room. He would circle the dart hole with marker, make copies and send them out to everyone. It was up to you and your compass to make the meeting. Good times.
