yes. look into papercrafting supplies. shaker cards have given rise to MANY clear front supply items - from flat/clear that you use dimensionals to pop off the base to formed clear tops (think snow globe effect).

i have made two snow globes to date. I stamped colored and cut my stamp and then used a lamination machine to sandwich is all together. then cut the 'sandwich' in a circle! looked pretty good to me!

How did you do this? Did you pop the sheet up and tape the edges down?

We've used Glossy Accents. It goes on thick and you can control where it goes by going around the perimeter then filling in the middle. We've used it on a number of ltc's.

This one had it applied for a rain effect. Also used it for the glass on an astronaut's helmet.

Art Journal recommendations

I’m looking for recommendations for a large-ish art journal, preferably unique in some way, earth-oriented, if that makes sense. Something a step above the standard, mass-produced ones on Amazon and the like. Any suggestions welcome, bonus points for a link to the source.

I can’t give you a specific link but Etsy would be a good place to look. Lots of original, handmade journals of all kinds. And some people will do custom orders.

I've been keeping a journal/art journal for 3 years now... and they are NOT all created equal. If you want to do any detailed art - you need to shell out the money and get the paper that can handle it. Some of them ghost horribly and will not stand up to water colors, etc.

When I first started - I used a dotted Leuchtturm1917. It holds up pretty well - but as colors get more saturated it bleeds through the pages.

My newest journal is from Archer and Olive. They are a privately owned company and their journals are expensive but so worth the money. You can get them in a wide array of designs, dotted and lined, also with different paper types... white, and mix of white, tan and black - and the all black pages journal. I'm itching to try that one but I don't think I'm artsy enough to justify it. There newest journal has rainbow pages...

I also bought the grab bag as I wasn't too picky about what I got... and you get 3 journals for the price of 1.5 of them. Some folks are really happy with what they get - others disappointed.

I think I found what I want (Etsy) - soft leather embossed cover, hand stitched, recycled, substantial paper pages, 8X10.
Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions.

Where has this been all my life?
I just got my Clairfontaine dot grid for next year's journal and I find this:

https://www.archerandolive.com/collections/notebooks/products/a5-bats-dot-grid-notebook

IT HAS BATS!

I wonder how well it holds up to fountain pen ink, since that is all I journal in and some of that ink is... hefty.

Archer and Olive are aesthetically super pleasing, I love dotted journals, but the paper has received mixed reviews. The maker doesn't seem to realize that gsm (weight of the paper) isn't everything - finish and such matters. I say this because I use fountain pens and the ink can be finicky (though sometimes really cheap paper works well - it depends). The owner just thinks that the thicker paper can handle ink well, but it depends on the paper surface and stuff. She has a big blind spot there and just insists it'll be great. So I still haven't bought any of her stuff.

I have MANY FEELINGS about journals and love looking online at journal reviews. It has to lay flat, and be well bound, and NOT GHOST (god, I hate ink that ghosts through a page so much, #1 pet peeve), and, er, many other of my own personal preferences. I ended up buying a Franklin Christoph journal for about $15 and really love it, it works beautifully. I only wish the front cover wasn't embossed - I'm split on painting the cover since the embossing will mess with any design I want to add.

Awww phooey. Well, at least my Clairefontaine was cheaper.

I see you're a fountain pen person. Are you over on Goulet Nation on facebook? I'm there, as is FloridaFour. I can't post about my latest order, since my mom is too, and I got her a new Retro 51 rollerball pen with dogs all over it for Christmas with my new journal and she knows I don't just order one thing from Goulet at a time....

Edit to add: went and looked at that reddit link. The feathering.... ewwwww....

Clairefontaine is nice stuff! I think Rhodia's web notebook is made from Clairefontaine paper and it's really nice paper. It IS cream instead of white if that bothers you though.

I am not on Goulet Nation - I don't have an FB account, I'm afraid! Your mom sounds very lucky!

I know what you mean by being unable to order just 1 thing from Goulet (and JetPens) at a time..... Fortunately I don't feel the hankering for any pens right now. I last bought an TWSBI Diamond pen (in a very self-indulgent rose-gold + smoke) and I LOVE IT so I feel sated at the moment. :)

yeah, I was so disappointed. Feathering is completely unacceptable for me.

I wonder if you use the embossed area as an added feature. For instance painting the whole cover and paint the raised part a shade darker like a ghosting. This is just thoughts - so much matters on what pattern you're working with there.

That's a good idea! Honestly, I am very new to painting so was thinking of a nice easy design like galaxy/stars, which is very forgiving. So probably the embossing will be OK. :)

My previous journal (Rhodia webnotebook) also had embossing, but it was much smaller. I stamped over it with Staz-On silver, and it has worn pretty well!
