My Mom wore Dad's school ring when they were dating. She wrapped yarn around the back of it. Apparently, that's what all the girls did back then. Probably not the look you were going for, though?

Yeah, I did the yarn thing in high school too. But no, not really what I'm going for now. :)

I'm 51, and menopause is kicking my butt.
If it was just hot flashes, I'd be fine. But I also get headaches, nausea and light headed with it sometimes.
I've been given some advice. Primrose oil, lavender tea and a product called Hot Flash are some. But I haven't tried them yet.
What would be good for the headache? I've been told it could be migraine. It sometimes settles around my left eye. But it's not debilitating. Is there such a thing as a mild migraine?
I do get ocular migraine, but this is different.

Black cohosh is rumored to help with menopause symptoms. I personally think nothing compares to plain old aspirin for most headaches (and after cranial surgery, I had some doozies). Ice or heat to the forehead can help. I have also heard that soy products help with all menopause symptoms because soy beans contain an estrogen-like compound.

My biggest problem after menopause was sleeplessness. I found it hard to go to sleep sometimes. Melatonin has been a lifesaver for me. There's one kind that works to help you go to sleep, and a timed-release version to helps if you're prone to waking up in the middle of the night and not going back to sleep. And it's not narcotic, so there's no sleeping pill hangover.

Good luck finding what works for you!

That was the one blessing I had--no more headaches. I used to have migraines & gun-blast headaches that would stop me in my tracks, and I realized one day that I don't get headaches anymore.

Yes, there is such a thing as a mild migraine. I had migraines that were connected to hormonal changes. The headaches and nausea will probably disappear when you are post menopause. In the meantime, if it IS migraine, Immatrix is the best thing out there (It won't do a thing if it's not a migraine)

Personal experience for me, aspirin doesn't touch my migraines. I have had them for over 50 years now and the only thing that ever helped mine is prescription sumatriptan. However, if you don't want to go that far, sometimes a little extra caffiene helps.

The headaches and nausea will probably disappear when you are post menopause.

Unfortunately, not always true. I have been post menopausal for about 13 years and continue to get them regularly. My mother's migraines stopped when she became post menopausal so it looks like you have a 50-50 chance based on my official study of 2 people. Since you didn't get migraines previously, you could be in the good 50% group.

Good luck!

It sucks, I was pre menopausal when I got breast cancer and went on the drug Tamoxifen which put me into complete non estrogen receiving. ..no hormone,,,not decreased...none. So after lumping around for awhile, I did things to increase my seratonin levels. Google that and see if anything sounds right to you. I think the hormone stuff will level out as your body adjusts, think pregnancy and morning sickness...of course even in the worst cases 9 months cures that ;-) Read a lot of stuff and try out a few things. Fatigue, hot flashes and mind numbing muscle spasms were my thing...everything is more tolerable now and I still have 2 and half years left on this drug. Good luck

Your adventures sound fun. But yes, those are things to worry about.
Definitely agree with being aware of surroundings, always have a plan to get out of there, be within reach of help, and follow your instincts and use common sense.
Hiking/sports undergarment recs for curvy ladies?

My sports bras are all falling apart. The ones that are falling apart are cheap ones that I got at a department store, but I'd like to spend a bit more this time around and invest in some better quality ones (maybe even with wick-away material chest bands, if the hiking gods are smiling down upon me?) The catch? I'm busty/plus-sized and everything I'm finding through EMS, REI, etc. seems to be geared towards ladies with a B cup or smaller. Anyone know of anything that might fit my needs? Thanks in advanced!

Lane bryant sells sports bras in extended sizes. I dont know about wicking, but they are quite supportive.

Torrid may have some as well. They are a bit pricey but they're good quality. They usually have coupons online as well.
Forever 21 has some too but they are much cheaper. They also only go up to a 3x or size 20 so they're not too extended with their sizes but they are pretty cheap.

See if you can find a running specialty store that sells the Shock Aborber. These are tricky to fit, but are THE BEST! I went down one band size and up one cup size.

I found a store in suburban Minneapolis that caters to female athletes (of all sizes) and spent over an hour trying on bras and then jogging in the fitting room.

If you are hiking (not running and therefore do not need to concern yourself with the associated issues of airborn anatomy), then look for the most stable bra possible with little to no elastic in the straps and very firm elastic in the band. I have had relatively good luck at Nordstrom Rack; I purchased a beautiful royal blue Wacoal underwire sports bra for cheap-cheap.

Look for one that has a zipper or some kind of hooks, etc vs over the head. Dang sports bras are so hard to get in and out of, I almost prefer a regular bra for running.

As someone in your same shoes so to speak, I like the Glamorise sports bras. I think they are not as expensive as the Lane Bryant ones and do a better job in my opinion. I am also a girl who tends to sweat a bit when hiking and--while I'm not sure they officially wick away--I have not found them too bad on dealing with that. My fave is the "No Bounce Full Support" although the double-layer custom and general full figure ones aren't bad. You should be able to order one to try pretty cheaply through amazon. Here's to the bra gods rather than the hiking gods smiling on you!

One brand: Moving Comfort. They go all the way from Flat chestedl sizes to HUUUUGE tracks of land sizes. I should know, I'm on the latter of that. I paid around $70ish for mine a few years ago at a running shoe store and it's pretty much the only bra that can handle a half marathon for me. VS used to have a good sports bra that went up to my size, but it's been discontinued for less high impact/smaller sized styles.

You want hooks, if you can pull it over your head, it's not going to do its job. As much as j love REI, the bigger sizes go fast if they even carry them. Your best bet is probably online, or a local running store, since us chesty runners would prefer not to have a pair of black eyes by the end of the race.
Girl Scout Cookies!

Hi Friends,
Cutie Cat is selling Girl Scout Cookies again. She wants to sell 1,200 to go to high adventure camp this summer. So this mamma is trying to help her out (and keep me sane!)

Our council is paying 1/2 the shipping charges again. Yea! And you can order any amount of any flavor you want this year!

Or, you can choose Cookie Share and the cookies will be sent to our service men and women all over the globe! (You don't have to eat them!)

And I *might* make an LTC as a thank you gift. If there's enough interest in it ;)

Thank you so much!

I have ordered cookies from 3 different girl scouts in 3 different parts of the country and the cookies have been different. Sometimes just different offerings and sometimes the look of the cookies is different. The lemon ones have been different every time!! And some folks did not have the peanut butter ones that are sandwich cookies, only the chocolate covered ones. I have found the differences interesting.

The option to donate to the troops is great. Especially since my lifestyle change doesn’t allow me to binge on boxes of cookies. :-).

We bought some so our girl scout troops can compare the cookies to ours. That way I can have some lemonades without binging.

That sounds cool. Our troop doesn't do a ton of donations, but we have a girl that writes letters to local businesses asking for donations. Last year, we had about 150 for local food pantries because of her. This year, we are doing military families through the council and our troop is donating to the YWCA.

I love that your council is subsidizing shipping online. Ours doesn't and I can't ever manage to get any online sales in our troop.

We were sitting around watching TV and Logan, our ginger kitten, comes up and starts licking my lips.

ECP says, “I wouldn’t let him do that”.

Assuming she was concerned for my safety I confidently replied, “Our cats are mostly indoor cats... besides, I continued, there’s not really many diseases that cats can pass along to humans!”

“It’s not so much that”, she replied, “he licks his butt”.
