It kind of looks like a broken pedal from an old tractor. There was a small one you used with your foot, but it's been years since I drive an old tractor so I don't remember what it did.

You hope you don’t get in trouble? No trouble talking on the boards about things you’re interested in. Politics are talked about on the politics board :) There’s a forgotten hobbies board, or you can even make a board for coin collecting if you wanted! Even though the boards aren’t used as much as they used to be (before my time on aq), there are boards to talk about all kinds of things with like-minded friends in our community!

I’ll keep an eye out for the bat quarter for ya :)

Thanks for posting - I hadn’t realized that there was an “America the Beautiful” series of quarters. I stopped collecting when life got busy, but these quarters are so cool ~

Btw, to make this related to Letterboxing, have you considered making a series using some of the images on the quarters? :)

I'm not sure that the gov't makes money from the special issue quarters, but one side effect of collecting them is that people have stashes of coins, and therefore have 'savings' set off to the side, even if they don't recognize their coin collections as such.

The gov't used to encourage us to save our money; the idea of spending what we have to 'stimulate the economy' is a new thing, I think.

When the state quarters first came out, one of my friends determined to get $10 of each one for his collection. I don't know if he actually carried that goal out, or if he continued with on with the rest of the special issue coins, but imagine if he did ! That would be quite a stack of coin by now.

My bet is that he has never viewed it as putting money aside that he could actually use in time of need. After all, it's just money - if you can't use your coin collection in an emergency, what real good is it ?

Hope this doesn't bug anyone, it's just my personal thought.

I'm not sure that the gov't makes money from the special issue quarters

As long as quarters cost less than 25 cents each to manufacture, the government definitely makes money on them. And when the government makes special issue coins, people do collect them, and the government does make money from it.

But don't get me started with pennies and nickels. Those really should be abolished. I'd vote to get rid of the dime too, but at least the government actually still makes a profit making those.

Death to Pennies
Canada Gets Rid of the Penny (Huzzah!)
I HATE PENNIES!!!! (Also Nickels.)

Nobody ever retired by saving pennies.

All of those videos are nearly 10 years old.... the cost to make pennies and nickels are even more now than when the videos were first published.

I have not read the thread so this may have been said but Australia got rid of pennies many years ago. They still price things the same (ie bargain at 9.99) but use basic rounding. 1,2 round down. 3,4 round up.

Please help me to understand what you mean. I want to understand.

Is it because the gov't is 'selling' the quarters to me? I go to the bank with the dollar bill that I earned by working, and I ask for and receive four quarters in exchange. I can buy the same thing with the dollar bill, or the four quarters, because the purchasing power for each is equal. I didn't pay extra for the coins, so I didn't think I was 'buying' quarters.

If I buy a special issue postage stamp, the money I pay for it is for providing me with a service (mailing a letter). If I keep that special issue stamp in my stamp collection, essentially I've paid for a service that I'm not going to use. As long as I don't use that stamp to send something, the gov't 'holds' my money.

But if I take the stamp out of my album and put it on an envelope and into the mailbox, the money the gov't was 'holding' goes out of their kitty to pay for their expenses to provide the service.

I could try to put 'coins' where I have the word 'stamps' in the above example, but I'm not sure it works the same.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, I just want to understand what you mean. :^)

Yes. It costs the US mint about 5 cents to produce each quarter. So they make a quarter for 5 cents and sell it to you for 25 cents and the government walks away with a 20-cent profit. Whether you use it or not, it doesn't really matter--the government still makes a 20-cent profit.

If you collect coins and take the quarter out of circulation, then the government needs to make another quarter to replace the one that you took out of circulation and they sell it to the next person for a 20-cent profit.

Generally speaking, the bigger the value of the currency is, the more profit the government makes. Bills cost about 7 cents each to make, so on a dollar bill, the government makes a 93-cent profit. On a $100 bill, the government makes $99.93 in profit.

I could try to put 'coins' where I have the word 'stamps' in the above example, but I'm not sure it works the same.

It works exactly the same. *nodding*

But the problem with pennies and nickels specifically is that they actually cost the government more to manufacture than the coins are actually worth. They're actually worth more as scrap metal than coins! And their primary job is to facilitate transactions, and they don't even do that well!

The coins need to die.

I was on my balcony watching what I thought were hawks, fighting other hawks? But then wait, they're not hawks, but RAVENS!! Oh melt my heart, a murder is nesting in my yard and are ready to stay. It was amazing to watch all of them protect their spot using all their different jobs together.
<3 VVvv

*edit, an unkindness of ravens suits me well also ;)

How cool! I'm familiar with the term "a murder of crows" but didn't realize it applied to ravens, as well. So appropriate that they should choose to set up their nest in YOUR yard!

I wish MY yard had a nest of ravens in it - I love 'em !

The closest I've ever been to ravens was the family group with recently-fledged youngsters landing in one of my pines for a short time and making the most incredibly raucous cries and squawks and gargles as they horsed around. It sounded as though they were having great fun. I watched them bounce around in the top branches - could even hear some of the branches breaking as they did !

I imagine that they sound like pterodactyls, if ever I had the chance to compare them. :^)

Thanks for the correction! I should have known. Well maybe that's why they took their unkindness someplace else since. Shame on me for not knowing better, darn it! But I am sure they were ravens and not crows, well I was...

I think most of the ones we see are probably crows but I don't know for sure. I can see the difference when I look at pictures but they aren't exactly posing for shots in real life. I love them both. They are my very favorite bird. Crows (and I assume???....ravens also) are so intelligent it's scary. Crows have been proven to recognize faces. We have a ton of them around my area and some of them are HUGE.

Ravens are normally seen in pairs. If they are flying, they have a wedge-shaped tail. Also they are surprisingly big.

They were Ravens, they do group, I know a lot about them and have done quite a bit of observation of them and their behaviors while living in Alaska. What I didn't know was that they can also be called an “unkindness,” a “treachery” or a “conspiracy,”.
They can team up with wolves, are pranksters/mischievous, can hold grudges against humans or bring them gifts. They will even shun one of their own for not doing the right thing. Very popular totem/spirit animal because of all this.
Amazing creatures for sure!
