Thats a lot of events. I know I carved one for a camper that seemed to travel everywhere. I thought it was so cool.

So does the person who puts on the event mail it back to you at the end of the event, or does the person doing the event hold onto it until they send it to the next event?

Now Im seriously thinking of doing one. Do you just contact the event leader and ask if they are having 'tabletop event stamps' and ask if you can send them one?

I can't speak for anyone else but for me it's just about the rules and traditions that were already in place when I started. It has nothing to do with ego.

When I go to edit a published box there is a message which states: You cannot change box types because people have already recorded finds and attempts on this listing.

That sure seems like a valid rule (or tradition). Was that in place when you started? That a box type can not be changed after a find? Would you be upset or even have an opinion if that happened?

When a box type is changed from traditional box to event box AFTER many persons have recorded the find that is just bullcrap. And this is my ONLY gripe regarding this discussion.

If the box was not published correctly, then retire the box, and relist it correctly. Do not undo previous finds because You cannot change box types because people have already recorded finds and attempts on this listing.

Those are the rules and they were not followed. And yes, much ego was involved, the type of ego which wants others to abide by unspoken rules by forcing them to comply with "traditions". My gripe is with a violation of written and published and what I assumed were actual real rules.

I will look for any box I am compelled to look for. Regardless of how it is listed! And I will record a find according to whatever the planter/owner desired. Please do NOT change it after the fact, because that is the written rule. Thank you.

Then take it up with Admin. If it was listed incorrectly and then changed one of them changed it.

And if what should have been an event box was incorrectly listed as traditional and then corrected by Admin I have no problem with that.

And that is exactly what bothers me - favoritism. A divisive force which never ends well. Allow me to repeat: You cannot change box types because people have already recorded finds and attempts on this listing.

I am quite astonished that you do not object to this travesty considering your purported allegiance to traditional letterboxing norms! I am left simply flabbergasted. The dichotomy is painful to experience. If you do not object to violation of written rules, your claim to be respectful to letterboxing norms is invalid.

You have no right to lord over me. And the inverse is equally true. I will continue to have tremendous fun letterboxing with or without your approval of my opinions! And I really hope and pray you will continue to enjoy this hobby despite your attitude :)

I agree with everyone though, which is that we are all in it for different things and we can have our personal preferences of what we do, and no one has to share our opinion of it.

It's very sad your peace making comments were so violently ignored by subsequent comments. Live and let Live does not exist. Live and you better damn well do it my way is the word of the day! Sorry, but no.

Let ME repeat……..Admin has the RIGHT to step in and change an incorrect listing and where you get this favoritism thing from I have NO idea. It sounds like some kind of personal gripe.

And you are going off the deep end with this unwarranted hostility toward me. I will repeat……Admin can step in and change an incorrect listing. That’s fine with me. because it was incorrect

It sounds like you had a listing changed and are pissed about it. Again……take it up with Admin

Lord it over you????? ::::shaking head:::: where does that even come from???! You seem very hostile and angry…….about having a listing changed? I can only assume you would be taking this anger out on anyone who made the mistake of responding to you.

You (or your other half?) are obviously extremely pissed off about something. And it has nothing to do with me.

LOL! Disagreeing with you is hostility? Gosh golly this has gone too far. Please calm down.

I simply do not agree with changing the rules after the fact. You think that's fine. I do not. If the rules were changed to make all event boxes automatically count as traditional finds retroactively would you be fine with that if admin made it happen? You must answer yes to support your position, obviously. But you may not feel comfortable with that?

Whoa, Nelly! Clearly, your feelings were running high, so maybe it would have been better to say these things to your wife in person rather than responding to her online.

All of us posting in this thread—you and I included—feel passionately about letterboxing, so it’s sometimes hard not to let that passion take over when we post—I’ve certainly posted things that I wish I hadn’t. But it’s important for all of us to remember that letterboxing is ultimately just a game. We can disagree about how it’s played, but it shows good sportsmanship to be civil when we do disagree.

Take care, and I hope to see you and DEF on the trails again soon!

I am calm. You're the one posting with all those exclamation points. It seems obvious that you either had a listing changed or lost a "traditional" find because someone else's listing got corrected by Admin. You are pissed about it. Take it up with them.

You seem to be very hostile in general. It has nothing to do with disagreeing with me.

I don't need to "support" my position. I don't need to answer the questions you are using to try and keep the argument going. I'm not going to continue a merry-go-round discussion with you that will probably at some point end up on the dead lemurs board because it's just that, round and round and round and round with no end in sight, because you seem to want to continue arguing for the sake of arguing.

If I remember correctly, when admin becomes aware of a box type listing error and changes the type of box, all listed finds migrate along with the box into the new category. Only the type of find is changed in a logbook. Ones traditional find total will go down while their event finds rise.

It's only when the planter themselves deletes the box and creates a new listing will all the finds permanently disappear. If this scenario has changed, pardon the interruption.

Agree.

I believe they don't entirely disappear--they go from being a listed to an unlisted find.

That’s true if a planter deletes a box that was listed correctly and just deletes it for some reason. I wonder if it’s the same in this type of situation? Hummm.

SO HELPFUL!! It has been awhile since I have attended or hosted an event. With an upcoming event looming before me, this thread has been invaluable as a simple refresher course and also as an informative, adult discussion. Thank you to everyone who has weighed in thus far. I really enjoy hearing opinions and reasoning that I had previously never really thought about in detail.

Yes, thanks so much! My group had so much fun trying to figure out the meanings behind each stamp. I’m going to Google it later!

We also really enjoyed the historical RI letterboxing series! It was fun to learn about RI boxing history.

Kudos to RIClimber and FancyFae for befriending the weather gods and getting us a glorious day for this event.

The clues were easy to follow, the images well-carved and conversation fodder (elephants? cranes? upside-down turtles--not--), and we met a few boxers we hadn't had the pleasure of meeting before.

All in all, a great day! And, thanks for the snicky-snacks!

When I started boxing, I mistakenly listed event boxes as traditional. G.T. told me just to change them over to event boxes even though they were listed as traditional because they were found at the event on tables. Those who found them and claimed them as traditional should have known better and not take advantage of that mistake. It will mess up their counts but they should know better if they are playing the game as it should be. That was 2 yrs ago. And I agree- you only cheat yourself for fluffing your numbers- but if that's how you play, that's you and it don't bother me.
I just want to play with the stamps and get my fingers nice and inky doing so.... lol If I can stamp all over my walls I would- but my hubby doesn't like that idea either.... 😜😅

I am less than 2 years into letterboxing. I have to speak up- it was very confusing to me to figure this out as many events do things differently.... When I log finds from events, I do not look to see if the images are Event boxes or Traditionals either.
So, I was at a post event gathering and Angel Winks kindly helped me understand the difference and answered my questions with patience and kindness. I HAD read the definitions in the glossary- but as I mentioned, have different experiences at events and looking for boxes. I had found boxes at an event where we had to do clues in advance.... and the series was listed as event boxes....even though clues were involved.... for example.......
So please be gentle with new boxers and understand that people may not be looking to up their numbers, just trying to figure out HOW this works! And, be like Angel Winks and take the newby's under your wings and help them with kindness- to encourage them to love this hobby!

Hahaha LBH18- I stamp on cardstock and make cards. I have never been tempted to stamp on my walls. You are funny!
