I use a bone folder or the handle of scissors to burnish, pressing fairly hard (but not hard enough to tear paper of course)

Glad the projection sheet worked for you!

When you mentioned that you color the back of the paper to transfer, what do you color it with?

I hope Kismet (she used to be campfire lady) doesn't mind me posting this. I don't think she comes around the boards on a regular basis anymore.

This is the simplest demonstration of an acetone transfer I have ever seen. It shows you the quick and easy steps involved. These steps are all there is to it. It's simple.

The only out of date info in the demonstration is that she is using PZCut and I don't think most of us are using that anymore. But it works just the same on pink stuff.

http://campfireladycreates.blogspot.com/2009/02/image-transfer-using-acetone.html

It's an old blog that I don't think she posts on anymore but there is a ton of interesting and helpful information on it.

oh wow thank you for this tip! i print out labels for my packages and I am left with the backing paper that is slick. I printed the images out on the slick side and transferred it just by rubbing it and it works like a charm!! I'm so exited!

I don't use that method, but my understanding is that after you transfer the image, you can wipe off whatever is left on the sheet, and reuse the sheet again. That seems like a nice bonus!!

That is a good information page. However:

The instructions say to not use a Laser printer; that is incorrect. The original instructions that I had been given suggested using an HP laserjet printer. I have since discovered that not all copiers and not all laser printers will print an image that will transfer with acetone. I have never had a failed transfer with HP LaserJets using HP toner. I have also discovered that not all knock-off toners transfer well, some do, some don't. It's a live and learn process.

For myself, I purchased the least expensive HP B&W LaserJet, my first cartridge lasted almost 5 years mostly only using it to make transfer images. The replacement cartridge was $60. The printer when I bought it was less than $100.

The acetone transfer works on just about any material but do a little test with it to see if it affects the surface. There was a carving rubber that I purchased at Blicks years ago that melted from a wash of acetone...

Echoing DZECP's warning -orders come from China, IF they come at all, and "customer service" is reportedly all but non-existent.

They have a lot of ads on Facebook. That in itself is a reason to not order. I don’t think Facebook vets any of those companies that post ads. They just take the money for the ads. Then if you read comments of people who ordered you see the complaints.

That's garbage. I've ordered dozens of things from Temu and have always been happy with the service, including when I had complaints about a couple things. You don't expect primo quality at those prices, just like buying from Harbor Freight Tools, but if good enough is good enough for you, it's a great place to buy stuff.

The biggest problem I have with Temu is that many items sold are stolen designs from other companies and sold for dirt cheap prices. The Chinese have no respect for Intellectual Property...... I have been in China- DD1 lived there for 3 years.... the night markets are full of stolen designs and dirt cheap. Its a sad situation.......
I used to love Temu or Ali Express, but have come to the point where I would rather support local or US stores and spend more $ doing it, as to support US made items or companies.
Additionally, I have seen and met people that work in factories in China. They are paid very low wages- and live stressful lives- think of the working poor in the USA. You are also supporting the people who own these companies by buying thru these websites.....

If you choose to buy thru them with full knowledge of this info- I do not judge, just choose to NOT buy through these sites for myself......

dumb question: are you putting the acetone on the carving material or putting the paper (image side down) on the material and the acetone on the paper (backside)?

Yes, place image ink side down on carving material, then rub the acetone over the back of the paper image is printed on… I can sometimes use the image more than once… no guarantees of that though

What a mystery as to why the ink won't attach to the rubber. I am using the same method as years ago. Placing printed image on rubber and dabbing acetone onto the back of that paper. The weird part is, the acetone no long makes the paper wet and sticky. It's like something is wrong with the acetone formula or something.

My first bottle of acetone came from Walmart and it was larger. This one is small and more for fingernails so I'm thinking they changed something in the mix. Just one of my theories.

I did get the overhead plastic to work wonderfully! So I'll be using that sheet till it falls apart. I love, love, love how I can wipe it off and reuse it. Many thanks to the person who sent it to me years ago. :)

PS, If I'm ever in the fingernail department of a store, I will pick up a fresh bottle of acetone just so I know for sure. It DID take the lines of my craft mat so it works on something. :S

You’re better off getting a can of acetone at the hardware store. That stuff is always the same.

I would imagine different brands in the nail section of stores may be diluted or have other ingredients, even though it may say acetone or “100%” acetone. Some may work and some may not. The stuff I get at the hardware store always works.

Nail polish remover MIGHT not be 100% acetone. If it is they usually brag about it on the front of the label. That could be an issue for you.

Special request for "Fox" letterboxes. Hey everyone if you have any fox stamps that you would be willing to send or carve and send to me. I would greatly appreciate it. I have a new letterboxer "Fox to Fox" in my area and she would be thrilled to find more foxes. She is 9. I would love to plant a series just for her. I have about 5 so far as I posted this on Facebook but would love more. They will be planted in Gainesville Florida. Thank you!

I completely forgot about a transfer issue I had w/ tan-z. For some reason, if I put the solvent onto the rubber itself and then attempted a transfer, it wouldn't work. I just couldn't figure out why. Then I cleaned the rubber, resanded, re-wiped, and applied the acetone from the back of the image, and it worked just fine. I still am not sure why.

What solvent are you using? I use wintergreen oil and wipe it onto TanZ with a Q-tip then lay the laserjet image down and burnish it gently.

So I'm looking for new blades for my boxcutters and noticed that Temu offers some with a much steeper angle for the snap-off blade, meaning it is far pointier than the blades I've been using:

We've discussed boxcutters here before; in fact, I appended new photos to an old album:

https://www.atlasquest.com/gallery/view-album.php?albumId=4065

Smartphone cameras have gotten loads better since those earlier photos were taken!

Boxcutters are not popular as stamp carving tools here, although there are some amazing YouTube videos showing people -- often Japanese people -- carving brilliant stamps in a matter of minutes using boxcutters. For me, the tip is too "blunt", the angle of the cutting edge isn't ideal for detail work.

That's where these new blades from Temu come in. Apparently I'm not the only one who prefers a pointier blade. Look over the photos in that album and you'll see what the new blades look like.

Can you carve with it? I cannot report on that. I haven't carved anything lately so I haven't tried this thing out. If I get a chance to test it, I'll report.

A bit of review about boxcutters: In general, you can get boxcutters that are all-metal or all-plastic. The Harbor Freight Tools boxcutter shown is something of a hybrid, plastic handle with a metal blade guide. I prefer these to either the all-plastic or the all-metal types.

A boxcutter, even one of these metal/plastic types, generally don't hold a blade very firmly; the tip can kind of rattle around in there. Perhaps not idea for stamp carving. But as I reported before, you can carefully pinch the tip of that metal blade guide down onto the blade with a pair of pliers to make it fit far more snugly. Too much pinch and you won't be able to move the blade into position; you can experiment a bit until you get it right.

If any of this works, it'll save carvers a ton of money. Those boxcutters are dirt cheap, the blades from Temu are dirt cheap, and when you need sharpening you just snap a piece off the tip and you're working with a new edge.

These are pointier blades for box cutters. However, I prefer the grip of a rounder handle. For me, this allows more control.

I guess that I could try one on my next carve. I do have a box cutter in my garage.

acetone. It was the weirdest thing because I was pretty sure I'd done it that way many, many times. But repeated experimentation gave me the same results. It was the only variable.
