I wish I could join you, but it's a wee bit too far to drive. :( I hope you have a great turn-out and get some new 'converts'. lol

Well, I have discovered 2 other established LBers in Calgary. So that is at least a start. And we'll just have to grow from there!!

APAL Challenge

So..... my fellow Albertans. I have a challenge for you. I moved from Ontario where each year they celebrate a winter Plant a Letterbox Day to encourage the planting of winter friendly letterboxes. While you might not feel like getting out there in -20 weather, we have plenty of chinook days where an outing would be much welcomed. So.... winter friendly boxes are those that are NOT buried under a pile of logs frozen beneath a pile of snow. Think.... hanging in trees, stuck under a park bench or even an indoor box (or boxes). The day is FEB 2, Groundhog Day.

So... when you have 2 weeks off over the holidays with nothing to do (ha! ha!!), think about getting out your carving tools and getting started. Plan to launch your APAL2012 Box (pronounced like apple) on February 2. (You can plant it earlier and then just list on the 2nd). Let's see how many winter friendly boxes we can come up with.

BTW... when you post your box, don't forget to use the winter-friendly (that's the snowflake) icon, so we all know we can rush out and get it on one of those nice Feb/March days.

Sounds like something I could do. Gotta love those -20 days, though, when the air is crisp and the sun bright. The crunch of boots on snow is something to cherish. Spirit Bear

It's not too bad if you do a quick ink-up with a stamp pad, but colouring a stamp with markers when you can hardly take the gloves off is a challenge. I'm like you though. I love the crunchy snow with sunlight sparkling off it.
Calgary Event Stamp Update

To all who attended the Calgary Mini-Meet in November. The Calgary Event Stamp has been removed from the ScoutShop at 2140 Brownsea Dr. I am still there Tues, Wed & Thurs most weeks (in the office downstairs) and I can certainly bring it and leave it through a weekend. So if you don't yet have it and want to come get it, just give me a few days advanced warning and I will make sure it is available for you ~ along with the markers.

Looking forward to some new winter friendly plants in Calgary (in Feb) and to seeing you'all at the next LB event next spring.... (I'm currently thinking May).

I'm thinking of knitting some fingerless gloves. :-) I also learned on a cold day in Denver one must huff on even stamp pad ink.

Sweet. I have 2 ready to go. (They aren't hidden yet). I also have some library boxes ready, but I haven't yet been able to convince a library to let me hide them there.... hopefully this week!!

Can't wait!

Just a quick note to everyone to let you know that I've posted a spring event for Alberta for the first weekend in May. (I chose this weekend to avoid 1. Mother's Day 2. Victoria Day 3. mosquitoes). Hope you can all plan to make it. For details see... http://www.atlasquest.com/showinfo.html?gEventId=2367

My daughter-in-law planted a box in a library but did so without receiving permission. She lives in Denver and wasn't the first to do such a thing. The one she planted in a coffee shop was done with permission so I guess it must depend on what you consider public and private.

Yeah, there was one in Owen Sound already that was planted without permission. But I couldn't figure out how to get the hollow book onto the Reference shelf without the library staff knowing about it. Maybe I'll just have to go and see what their spine labels look like and do one up that's "similar". I may resort to that if I don't hear back from the librarian shortly.

Don't forget that Feb 2 is APAL day (that's Alberta Plant a Letterbox Day). I planted 2 more boxes yesterday in addition to those already hidden and in place. One left to go (I know exactly where it needs to be) and I'm just finishing up the clues. Look for a "slew" of new winter friendly stamps to find this weekend and beyond!!!

I have one planted. I'll never keep up with you, but I'll try to plant a few more once my life settles down a bit.

BTW, my daughter-in-law used a small metal box with a magnet to fasten her box to the back of a library shelf. It is small enough to be missed.

I don't expect anyone to keep up with me. I hope to inspire some to do more, that's all!! Trying to work out with the library to hold a workshop to recruit some newbies.... not much success yet.

You should see how small my library stamps are!!!

I'm looking forward to searching for yours!!

Which ones are you headed for first?? Or are you going to try to pick up all 24?

Just kidding!! Anyone else getting the bug?

I'm hoping to get some planted this week. I've been laid low with a horrid cold that has lasted 3 weeks. I blame my grandson's friends for gifting the bug to me. I have 6 carves ready to plant and I must replant the 'beacon' one that someone trashed. We'll see how far I get with my planting plans. :-)

Yeah!!! I can't wait. The weather has been gorgeous the last few days. I planted 2 more of the Green Meadows and Green Forest characters on Saturday.... up to 10 now. I've got another series I want to do next before I go with more GMF characters, to get folks out of the city.

Sorry to hear you've been feeling so lousy. I thought you were heading out of town for a bit? Has the cold put off your travel plans or are you just hoping you're over it before you need to go?

Yeah I'm off to Amsterdam next week for a week and maybe to Banff in mid-May. My grandsons live in Denver so I was there over Easter and caught this bug there. I want to do your GMF series and had plans earlier this month to do it when I returned from the States but of course, my illness put the kibosh on that.

I'll give you a head's up when I've planted my boxes.

For those who attempted this letterbox, you'll be happy to know it is alive and well once again. Twice the box has been trashed so I'm hoping this is third time lucky. It was my first carve so I hope it succeeds as a viable letterbox. Spirit Bear

Hi,
I will be in Calgary next week, wondering if there are any letterboxers around in the city. I have a couple of day trips planned, but would love to meet up if we can work it out!
