I never knew it was, but it's cool. Thanks for the rabbit hole! ha ha. I've been trying to locate it but for some reason I guess it's location is secret.
I did find some other info about it. It's been known about in the tree-hunters community since 1950. It was officially put on the Big Tree Registry in 1972 but was taken off sometime later because of insufficient measuring documentation.
Fred Breglia found mention of it and went looking for it. So it was more research than serendipity. He also said in an interview he does not believe it's the biggest in the state.
So you NY boxers, get your hiking boots on! š

Look up Sycamore Gap Tree.
I googled that. It was a tree in England that has been chopped down. Are you saying that's why no one wants to say where it is?

Interesting. I hadn't seen that. I wrote to him asking if it was someplace I could get to because I hadn't seen the actual location. But I haven't heard back.
I found the link for that info you found.

Yup. A strikingly beautiful sycamore tree sitting by a section of Hadrianās wall, it became famous after a movie scene was shot there in the 1990ās. Named āEnglish Tree of the Year,ā 2016. Cut down by vandals last year.
California has contenders for the worldās oldest tree in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine forest. The forest service will not disclose the locations of specific trees for fear of vandalism and/or damage from souvenir seekers, carvers, etc.
The risk is mainly for trees in somewhat remote areas.

Seems to me that you're only a couple of hours from many of the largest trees in the world in Sequoia NP. I couldn't find any boxes around that area. Think we need to make a trip down there sometime soon. :-)

Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge

Mar 29, 2024 1:12pm
So I got a letter from the folks at the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge who are not at all happy about the letterboxes that they've discovered on their property. Just a reminder that letterboxes are not permitted in national wildlife refuges, and the boxes that are located here should be removed. They asked me to remove them--why they would think I'd be anywhere New York anytime soon to do that is beyond me. If you live nearby and have time, please remove them and see if you can return them back to the owners before they decide just to throw them in the trash.
These are the ones I could find on AQ:
Some of these are undoubtedly missing and were already retired, and others are probably missing but were not marked as retired, but some are definitely still in place and need to be removed. I'm going to mark all of the "active" and "unknown" boxes as "unavailable" so they don't show up in searches, but the "unavailable" ones need to be removed or confirmed missing.
Thanks!
-- Ryan

An āactual physical letter in the mailā? Wow. They probably put their best man on it. I can picture the field ranger telling his supervisor, āIāll fire off an email to this turtle fellow, bossā.
Boss: No, Jenkins, this is far too important a matter. Iām turning it over to Hanranan in āDemandsā, if this joker thinks heās green now just wait til he hears from us!
A few days later, a letter composed on the finest stock, written in longhand (beautifully, of course), arrives;
Dear Master Ryan,
I has come to my attention that an offending game piece of this āhobbyā of yours has been found in our sacred forest.
This is beyond the pale. I realize you are all of the way across the country but we must demand you appear here forthwith, in person, and immediately remove these offending pieces of detritus.
In the future, these types of affronts will not stand!
I thank you in advance and bid you adieu, good sir.
Hanrahan.

Someone needs to save those craftymouse boxes if the first two are still there. They were out there a long time - why now?

It looks very much like they looked at AQ - most of these boxes have been out there quite a while, and experienced boxers.

This is why restrictions on boxes are good, since it very much looks as if someone with too much time on their hands looked them up on AQ or LBNA
