Most likely! We were in Utah late April to May, traveled around the mighty five and finding and planting letterboxes along the way. Looks like I got one of yours in MA back in 2017.

My partner and I full time rv so we get around a bit. Alaska is a bucket list trip for us. Can’t wait to get up there.

Hey, we are about to become full time rvers. I wonder how many of us there are on here. I'd love to know if any my boxes are still there.

I dare say Massachusetts probably gets a few more letterboxing visitors than does Alaska, however, so more attempts and information as to whether boxes are there or not ... ;)

Chances are pretty good that if they haven't been found since 2013, they're still there. There are at the most, 5 or 6 boxers in Alaska and once you've found the boxes, there's no reason to go again. People come here and don't log finds. There's many reasons they may not have been found. Keep in mind too, boxes don't usually get found from September/October until April/May due to snow and ice. Message us before you get here and maybe we can meet up!

If you need help determining which boxes you can get in a short amount of time, we can probably help. I'm not a tour guide, but I can certainly give you guidance. :) I was born and raised here, I know my way around.

I may just contact you regarding some. I've gone through Anchorage and chosen some that sound nice, but we'll be all over the place during our trip, so I need to narrow down my list!

Regarding a potential meetup - Honeymama and I love mini meets or meeting people on the trail! She is much shyer than I am, but enjoyed making some friends at an Oregon event a few years ago, so she always asks if we're going to do something like that again.

Right now I can tell you that we land in Anchorage on 7/15 and pick up our RV on 7/16. Our flight out is on 7/30, and I'm pretty sure we'll be passing through Anchorage mid-trip, too. Maybe we could schedule a mini-meal or mini-trail meet in the middle or at the end!

We do not have an itinerary yet, but are driving our own rv up from Washington. We plan on coming into AK through the northern route from Dawson city to chicken. Not sure if we will be in the anchorage area at that time or not but if we are, totally down for a meet up.
Matanuska Glacier

Not sure if any natives have an opinion for an incoming tourist... but Honeymama and I definitely want to explore the Matanuska Glacier. However, we're torn as to whether we should do it on our own or with a guide? We're concerned that if we try to do it on our own, the road to access the glacier hike will be poor and / or that we'll miss some of the best hiking on the glacier. On the other side, we also don't want to spend a bunch of money for something that we could have just done ourselves and been quite happy about it.

So... anyone have an opinion? Don't you just love when a tourist asks about local things? ^_^

Also, I was really, really hoping to schedule some sort of trail get together on our trip, but it doesn't look like we'll be in reasonable range of Anchorage on the weekends :( . Bummer.

I have never actually been to Matanuska so can't speak to the driving aspect but the concern with having a guide or not is also gear and safety related; guides will likely provide you with crampons and have you tied together with ropes in the even someone finds a crevasse. That being said, I have been on a number of glaciers up here without either and am not dead yet so take that for what it is worth... I would probably do it on my own but take kahtoola spikes at a minimum.

Thanks so much for the advice. We went ahead and signed up for a tour :). Every review I read was either "You just HAVE to go with a tour!" or "We had so much fun WITHOUT a tour guide!" and I just didn't know what to do.

I'm pretty new to Letterboxing, but I've already found three hidden around Anchorage, so there are at least three boxes that are still active! :)

Ahoy Girl! Retirement in the works. i'm sure your boxes are still there. They were very well done. E has done a great job of combing thru the state. i relied on him to do my maintenance. Thanx E! Alaska letterboxers cover the biggest state with the least amount of boxers.

The best way is definitely with a tour guide, especially if you're not from here.

Other note: Saying natives in Alaska refers to our indigenous people, Alaska Natives, a common mistake tourists and outsiders make. So if you want to say someone who lives in Alaska, you would say either "a local" or "Alaskan". :) Just a heads up. It was very confusing when someone asked me "Are you a native of Alaska?" the answer was "No." and they said "Where are you from?" and I said "Alaska." The conversation ended up being very confusing until I worked that out. LOL Have a good time!

Also, if you want to get together during the week, after work usually works for us. :)

Dirt Monkey is headed to Kodiak for a few days next week. Any you need checked? I don't think I have any ready for planting out there, we're kinda filling up the island, but we're still here!

Even though I don’t live there (but did leave a piece of my heart when I lived there) Alaska means a lot to me.

I read the book, saw the trail (didn’t wander on to it though), and entertained the fool hardy idea of hiking to it, with much preparation. But I never did, better sense of course. But it is a little sad. I hope they display the bus somewhere, with appropriate interpretation.

Makes me wonder though, think DNR or the National Guard will find the letterbox???

That ‘is’ kind of sad. I read the book. I think I saw the movie. Now I want to see again. It would be a shame if they just junk it.

The box is not on the bus itself so is probably still out there. I have never done that hike yet though will admit it is less appealing now to think about.

Interesting!

I was thinking it was by the fuel cap or something on the bus itself. It’s been on my watched boxes for a while now, even though the chances of me ever getting it are slim to nil, due to timing and questioning if I would be able to secure a four-wheeler to supplement hiking. Plus, lack of victory photo with bus makes it less appealing.

Hey everybody!

It's been awhile! Anyone interested in having a 'plant a letterbox day' just for Alaska? I know I've been slacking on planting, but I have a few up my sleeve. Also, the weather is super nice, so, I'm excited to get out and do some boxing and I need some new ones to find! HA!

Maybe July 15th or a weekend around there?

I can't commit to anything on a weekend during dipnet season (July 10-31). And I have a few stamps as well; maybe I should plant some of them NOT on multi-hour hikes? LOL
