Outings Cards shuffle
Board: Rules and Variants

Thread Board (disabled)
Original rule:
Randomly select 14 outing card types (there are only 14 types in the base set) using the mini randomizer deck. Order the full sized outing card stacks (9 identical cards per stack) by ink and mile cost in two rows of 7 stacks each. Place the missing box cards and the Eevil stack at the end of the outing rows.

I admit that I did not read the rules carefully and did NOT realize that all of the 14 stacks were supposed to have the SAME cards in it. So when I played with Scouttrekkie I just shuffled the Outings cards and dealt 14 stacks of RANDOM cards (9 per stack). It played fine that way. And I'm thinking that when I get the Expansion set if I play by the standard rules, I'll have to leave out playing with some of the cards, so I might like to continue to just randomly deal 14 stacks of 9 cards just so I have a chance to play all varieties of cards.

So I guess I "invented" a different way of playing that seems to work good just from my lack of attention to reading all the rule details! LOL!

OK, please forgive me for being behind on this. Here's the link to the rule book:

As I write this, they are a work that's under construction.

But here's the old blog posts that also describe the rules:

You can comment on the Google Doc as I work on it or you can ask questions here.

Umm...

Hehehehe...

Seriously, no worries. I had a copy of the game and just used your blog posts and figured it out just fine. :) I'm just glad I got in on the early shipment of the cards. If it takes a little longer for you to perfect the game rules book, that's perfectly okay. You are doing that on top of making Sponsor cards and Custom cards and preparing for the next order!! And you are just a one man operation with a real job to squeeze in there too!

Thanks for doing this. :)

Hey Wolfie now we have two ways to play the game! I guess that answers why we had those other cards we didn't know what to do with.

Well, if we hadn't stayed up past Aiphid's bed time we might have been able to pull a Phone-a-Friend. :D

But I did find out about the Archeologist Outing card we thought might be an eevil card because it has a negative effect on it. It's just a different kind of strategy to play!

Basically, the Archeologist card is the CHEAPEST card you can purchase (4 miles) with the HIGHEST find count (3 Finds) so it has to have a negative effect (must acquire a Missing Box card = -1 find) to offset that. BUT you could negate the effects of the Missing box card with a Maintenance card (retiring that Missing box card out of your deck). And by doing that, you could end up with the highest F count in the game and win!

Pretty clever actually! Of course, we didn't think of that at the time.... Really want a rematch now!!

Hehehe... I like that too. I usually spend the first game learning rules and strategies from other players. Then the second game I start to really play. ;)

I only played once but would like to play again. We ended the game by exhausting 6 stacks of the Outing cards rather than the eevil cards. We really didn't play many eevil cards. The Trinket Trader ALWAYS starts on the top of the eevil deck and is cost of 8 ink. I think I was using mostly MILES so I did not have as much INK. There are 10 eevil cards and 8 of them require INK to purchase. So if you are going for the eevil cards it might make more sense to stock up more on INK.

I'm not sure why Trinket Trader always needs to be on top. For another rules variant, I may just shuffle the eevil deck and have a RANDOM eevil card on top. That way I'm more likely to get a chance to play different eevil cards. Or so it's possible that MILES start off the eevil deck.

I have set up the board and have 2 cards I don't know what to do with -- The Driver and Boxing Buddy.

Also, does the last player to play get the top starting eevil card to discard in his deck and then the next one is turned over, or does someone have to buy the eevil card. Let's say someone buys the trinket eevil card. At that time does everyone discard a card right then and then the next eevil card is revealed and just sits there until someone decides to buy it? Is the discard pile face up? I've printed the clues from a couple different places & have some duplicates and it's getting kind of confusing. Haven't started playing yet, just trying to understand the rules & get them in my head first. My daughter said she'd play with me, so there will just be 2 of us. I paper-covered & lined my box. It turned out pretty cute.

Those are starter cards. You can leave them aside unless you are playing with the Team Boxer or the Buddy Boxer.

Oh, and what do I do with the miniature cards?

The little cards are the randomizer deck. You can leave them aside for now.

Also, does the last player to play get the top starting eevil card to discard in his deck and then the next one is turned over, or does someone have to buy the eevil card.

Someone has to buy the card for the next one to be revealed.

Let's say someone buys the trinket eevil card. At that time does everyone discard a card right then

Nope, they just put it in their discard, finish their turn, and then the next Eevil card is revealed and attacks. Revealing an Eevil card triggers the Eevil Attack ability, but all the other abilities (+3 ink, draw a card, etc.) only take place when they are played.

the next eevil card is revealed and just sits there until someone decides to buy it?

The next card will attack once and then will just sit there. Although, the Eevil card in the expansion will attack more then once -- more to come on that later.

Is the discard pile face up?

Each player has their own discard pile and they are face up.

and it's getting kind of confusing

Sorry, I know it's sub-optimal to have to use an instruction sheet that's still being written but as of a couple nights ago it's almost done. I just need to write up the attack/defend stuff and then go back and double-check everything else. I apologize for the wait.

A few questions
Board: Rules and Variants

We played the game last night and had a really fun evening, but we had a few questions:

The rules state "Play cards from your hand, one at a time, and fully resolve the effects of each card as they are played." While this probably irrelevant for most of the ink or miles cards, for some cards like the Bonus Box and Maintenance cards that have ink/miles and then "draw a card", do you have to "spend" the ink/miles before you draw the card, or can you draw the card and add the ink/miles on the new card to your total? (We played the second way.)

The Aiphid player card says "Tap this card to block an attack. Untap at the end of your next turn." This isn't really explained anywhere.

Does the "You go first" on the Power Boxer card mean you get to start the game, independent of whomever found the most recent box?

For the Paparazzi Boxer special ability you get to reveal a random card from an opponent's hand and play it. Does this mean you play it as if it were your own, and at the end of your turn does it go into your discard pile, or your opponent's discard pile?

I'm sure we could decide on our own, but a little clarification would help.

Thanks,
TheKindlyVikings

Great questions! I'll have to start saving up some like these for a FAQ :)

do you have to "spend" the ink/miles before you draw the card, or can you draw the card and add the ink/miles on the new card to your total?

You can interleave buying and playing, including saving all of the ink/miles until the end when you can't play any more so that you can buy more expensive cards.

"Tap this card to block an attack. Untap at the end of your next turn." This isn't really explained anywhere.

"tap" just means to turn it sidewards so that you know that you've used it. You can't use it while it's tapped, so it limits how often you can cheat.

For the Paparazzi Boxer special ability you get to reveal a random card from an opponent's hand and play it. Does this mean you play it as if it were your own, and at the end of your turn does it go into your discard pile, or your opponent's discard pile?

When a card is revealed, it does not leave where it is (deck, hand, etc.). You just get to see it and play it as though you had a copy (a photograph) during that turn.

So now you know he's a geek from using "tap" and "untap" and a computer programmer from using "interleave".

I know the term "tap" from something different that doesn't relate to cards. Hint:
Rule #2: Double tap!

But applying it in that context would mean retiring the Aiphid card. *giggle*

While I only played it once, I never realized that MTG was developed so close to home. I went to college in Walla Walla where Richard Garfield (the designer) was living when the game was released. -TKV

Yeah that card wasn't origin ally part of the game so I didn't define it. I should add a glossary and faq to the rulebook.

Umm... you are the creator of the game. You put it in the 2013 deck that I have and you have. It doesn't get any more official than the creator putting it in the deck!!! It IS official!! It IS!!!

And NOW it's in the 2014 deck making it double official!! HA!! :D

I really like that card.
5 Player Test
Board: Rules and Variants

My family attempted 5 players (though we know it's not made for 5 players we forced it to work anyway! HA!). There were card storage problems so we modified a few things:

1. There are not enough Starter cards so we subtracted 2 miles and 2 ink off of the first Starter deck. It has to start a little slow on what you can purchase but we still managed to play just fine within a few rounds.

2. The Missing box cards run out much faster. And as soon as those are gone, everyone is scrambling for those Archaeologist cards! And the lack of Missing Box cards negates the Event card attacks and some Eevil attacks.

We still managed to get a really good game out of it. And no one wanted it to end it even though they could (ONE card removed would have meant 6 cards gone). They particularly liked the Eevil cards and the variations and surprises there. Eevil cards are INK HEAVY which made them difficult to get if you didn't start stocking up on ink. We didn't realize this initially and started stocking up on ink when we did.

  • Ben won at 44 finds by getting the most eevil cards.
  • I came in second at 40 finds by snatching Archaeologist cards after the Missing box cards ran out.
Event cards

The Attack on an Event card says:
Each opponent gains a Missing Box unless they can discard a Missing Box from their hand.

So if I get "attacked" and HAVE a missing box my missing box blocks getting another missing box.

The kids were trying to wrap their heads around how this would relate to an actual event. They could not figure out who are the malicious people at an event making sure everyone has a missing box! LOL!!!
Another variation of play...
Board: Rules and Variants

The first time I played I didn't realize I was supposed to keep all of the same Outing cards together in piles and shuffled and dealt into piles. The same number of cards were in each pile and it played just fine.

When I last played, we really enjoyed the eevil cards. It's not easy building up to the cost to buy some of them and we really wanted to see more. With the same card at the top (and there is a reason for this since it doesn't have an eevil attack), it takes longer to see something new. So at some point, I want to try how the game would play if the eevil cards were NOT in their own stack but shuffled in with the Outing cards. They could NOT be on the top of the stack to start so they would have to be reshuffled if they came to the top. But this would mean you would NOT know when you were going to reveal an eevil card! It could also mean that multiple eevil cards could show up and be available for purchase.

The game is fine as is. I just have a thing for messing with the "rules". ;)
