Hey future visitors to Japan,

I noticed that there is now a letterbox in Japan, too. Think the clues are on LBNA--so it's worth a look if you're heading there. It's part of a hybrid geocache, though. So be prepared in the event the stamp may wander off as a trade item.

I'm REALLY bored

You may have been bored, but it's an interesting question....I have an uncle who lives there and teaches english to Japanese families. And now I'm wondering if I should go and visit...and find some Letterboxes! Are there any planted there? I actually haven't ever checked...if not, I'd have to plant a few!

Wow! I never though of planting a letterbox in Japan! My friend visits her family, that lives there, almost every year. I love Japan!! I if I ever go (hopefully some time soon) I will plant a box!! :-)

Without question :) It does look like there are 2 planted already, but there should be more! If only I had known about letterboxing about 11 years ago (...had it technically started in the US yet?), that was my chance to plant! Some day I'll go back.....

I just returned from a trip to Japan and planted 3 boxes while there - geocaching does seem to be more popular in that country than letterboxing! But I was able to gather some neat stamp images from other sources. There are many "official" stamps at tourist sites, such as the Imperial Palace and various temples. Also, the JR stations in Tokyo often have a commemorative stamp. It took me a while to figure out that they are often in the main reservation office for each station. The stamps are unique to the station and are usually chained to a stamp station. I have a picture of one of the stamp stations which I will upload for reference.

Hello all!

My sister will be traveling to Japan really soon (as in on Monday!) and I just now thought to see if there were any letterboxes/letterboxers in Japan?

I went to Japan for a couple of days last year and planted a box in Tokyo (Mighty Atom). Don't know if there are any LBers in Japan but I've been reading that the Japanese are VERY into rubber stamps. I have bought a couple of Japanese books on how to carve a rubber stamp. And I found out AFTER I got home from the trip that many tourist sites, subway stations, temples, etc. in Japan have their own custom rubber stamp that you can stamp in your book. Wish I would have known this before I went. Check out-

Thank you for the link. My husband traveled to Japan with Mazda Motor Mfgr years ago. He will be interested in seeing this now that he is boxing.

You could make a "Passport type" of book for just those.

I planted 3 letterboxes when I was in Japan recently (February), and they all have yet to be found. And I also found Astro D's box when I was there - it was remarkably well visited! And as Astro D also mentioned, check out the subway stations for "souvenir stamps." I got quite a few of those. Sometimes they are in the reservations office. The JR line stations seemed to consistently have them.

I hid a box last year near the Daibutsu, so I've been waiting to see who might come across it. Princess Lea, you just missed it! :)

It's good to see more boxes in Japan. Next time I'm over there visiting my in-laws I plan to plant some more, as well as track down boxes planted by others -- if I can convince my wife... She calls me an otaku (nerd)!
