What should I do while in Jamaica?

Hi, I was gathering all the clues for Ocho Rios and Georgetown, Grand Cayman. I've notice quite a few plants there. So, I got to thinking (scary sometimes). Obviously, many boxers have been to both places. I'm not sure what to do while in these ports. Oh, yeah, did I mention it's a cruise that's taking me to these beautiful towns?

In the past, much time was wasted trying to figure out what to do once we've docked. I don't want to waste time on this cruise. I want to explore and have fun. The age group traveling is from 7 to 66. So, it can't be too wild. Personally, I'd love to spend my time on a secluded beach and play in the water and drink fruity drinks. But, the others want to shop and play.

If you've gone to these beautiful ports, what did you do?

Just a warning. My mom went on a cruise there not to long ago. she went on a shopping / ochos rios excursion through the cruise line. At some point someone stole her shopping items off the bus before they returned to the ship.

I really think Dunn's River Falls (near Ocho Rios) is a must. The falls is one-of-a-kind. Granted, it's tourist crazy, but it's really, really cool. I'd even suggest you choose this over the shopping because the shopping is really just a hassle and not pleasant with all the bargaining and people begging you for money and offering to sell you drugs. Plus, they do have some shopping at Dunn's River Falls. Enjoy!

What ship are you on?

If you scuba dive, do take a dive tour while in Grand Cayman. If you don't dive, take a snorkeling tour. I can't imagine anything you can do on land there that could compete with what you can see underwater!

As for Ocho Rios, you HAVE to see Dunn's River Falls! It is wonderful! We did a tour that combined that with a plantation where they showed how they grow various tropical things. It was great.

In Jamaica, especially, you'll probably want to book any tour you take through the cruise line, and don't go off on your own. I've heard stories about people being harrassed or robbed. Our experience didn't include any of that, but the locals were VERY pushy, trying to sell you stuff and NOT taking no for an answer. That part of the trip wasn't any fun at all. One of them came up and handed my son a strap they make from palms and use to climb trees for . . . can't remember if it's coconuts or bananas. Once Matt (who was fairly young at the time) thought he'd been given a present, the guy turned to my husband and demanded $5 for it! They know when the cruise guests are coming, and they lie in wait!

But the falls are gorgeous, and you do get to climb right up them, so that's a great thing to do.

Hey
If you go on the website for your cruiseline you should be able to see the shore excursions listed out. Then when you are on the ship you can just sign up for them. When we went on one for our honeymoon, they had a informational meeting that described all the excursions then you had to sign up for them and some filled up. We had all our info ahead of time and then went straight to the ones we wanted. We did at least 2 excursions at each port. A bit rushed admittedly, dont know that I would do that again. We sort of figured "when are we going to come back" mentality, so we did as much as we could.

Dunns river falls is not to be missed. It is touristy, but well run. Its a lot of fun. Grand Cayman...Sting Ray city where you can swim with the sting rays, or any snorkle excursion. The turtle farm is cool too. There is so much to do, so do as much research as you can before you go. Be prepared for sticker shock!! Its expensive down there. Specially in Grand Cayman. We were there for a week and the cost of food almost killed us!

How could I have forgotten Stingray City!?!?!? That is awesome, too! And they do give you snorkels to use, so I guess it could come under my previous heading of "snorkeling tours."

When you're checking your cruise line's website, see if they sell the tours online. Then, if you know what you want, you can book it before you even board, and not have to run the risk that it'll be sold out.

Wow, y'all have been so much help. I am going on Celebrity's Century ship from Feb. 9 to the 14th. I joined cruisecritic.com, which my brother swears by. After logging on and reading some info, I realized, "Why don't I ask my buddies at AQ?" Y'all have helped me more than all the reading I've done. I really wanted to go to Dunn's Falls, but didn't know if that was mentioned so much due to advertising.

I kind of 'figured' it wasn't a safe place. When they have an excursion that includes sitting on a 'safe' beach, that's a telltale clue to watch out for the locals. How sad is that?

I've cruised before, but never done an excursion. I'm excited.

39 days and counting!!

If you're taking the Imagination don't forget to search for my box on board! There's supposed to be a box at Dunn's River, definitely a neat spot. I'll be there in January and will check for it. Last visit earlier this year I found Smile Mon, a very easy find and great stamp.

The diving here is awesome too. Both hear and Grand Cayman diving, and probably snorkeling, are great. Make sure to fit it in around boxing! :o)

It's in a spot I can't imagine they'd find and remove. Just a stamp. :o) And don't miss all the treasures at Key West!

So excited! Travel'n Turtle

Too funny. Now you've got to get on the Carnival; it's only right that you have this stamp. :o)
