Whooppee, we have another English AQ member!

Welcome Jenko, and I am giving you the obligatory warning - if you thought letterboxing was addictive, just wait until you find your way around all the lovely letterboxing toys on Atlas Quest :-D

Stock up on coke, sandwiches and crisps because you will find it hard to tear yourself away to eat. Oh yes, and cover your keyboard with clingfilm as the laughter generated here constantly makes us splutter coke all over our keyboards.

Jenko has already planted a letterbox in Dorset:-

Welcome!!

Yes, it's all rather addictive, however, I find that Boxers n' Briefs is helping my recovery. I dont' feel I have to be on here every minute lest I miss something....just take it slow and in moderation and you should be just fine....on the other hand maybe you WANT to be addicted, if so, you'll have plenty of company!!

Yes, welcome to JF. The new box is not too far from so I'll try to get down to Dorset soon (though it did take me about 8 months to get to Glastonbury and Princess Lea's boxes).

I'm not English, but will you accept another UK letterboxer with the same gusto? My name's Cadenza, and I've been letterboxing enthusiastically for several years now in the states, but I just moved to Cardiff, Wales with my husband. He is English, and the UK will be our permanent home. I'm hoping to help build some letterboxing traditions here in South Wales, but it's a bit challenging as I don't have a car yet and public transport doesn't get me where I like to plant. I'll have to break down and do some urban boxes then I'll see if I can get friends to take me up into the parks and up the coast. Maybe then I can lure a few of you English boxers up into the Welsh countryside. :)

I got back on this board because I remember finding a link to letterboxes in Brecon Beacons National Park here in South Wales. I'm not sure where I found those, but I want to look them up again. I'll have to dig a little deeper and see where I initially found those listings, but in the meantime let me know if anyone is heading this way! I've recently been contacted by a letterboxer who is considering moving to Cardiff--oh, that would be brilliant!!

These are "Off Dartmoor" clues, which include boxes at Brecon Beacons NP. Best of luck getting more folks addicted.

Hi Cadenza, welcome to the UK branch of AQ. This select little group is gradually growing. Sadly we are rather spread out - well by UK standards, probably not by American standards. The more the merrier though, and perhaps we will get more chat on this board as the numbers grow. Before long we are going to have to think of a central place to hold an AQ meet.

Eidolon was correct that the place to look for Brecon Beacon clues is:-

http://www.ian.kirkpatrick2.btinternet.co.uk/page1.htm

Ian Kirkpatrick is The Dartmoor Bounder, and although he did join AQ he does not log in very often.

Unfortunately the Brecon Beacon boxes do tend to be on mountain summits and not well maintained. In fact I used to have one on top of Pen Y Fan myself, but that has long gone.

The Red Cat has a Welsh AQ box, but that is near Bangor which is north Wales:-

Looking forward to seeing some more Welsh boxes being planted and we will give a loud holler if we are coming down your way.

I forgot to say Cadenza, if you are having any problems working out our English names for the different types of letterboxes don't hesitate to ask. We will do our best to sort you out :-)

Welcome to Britain Cadenza.

Cardiff isn’t too far away from me, an hour and a half up the M4 if the traffic is kind, (which it rarely is :-( ) Very occasionally I get to Cardiff on business so I could fit in time to grab a quick urban box if you plant one.

Dang. I miss my 6' welsh blonde girlfriend from Prestatyn, Wales. But that's north Wales isn't it?

Has anyone planted a box in Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, Wales yet?

I am still hoping someone will find my humble letterbox on the Scottish borders.

Yes it is! The train that I would take to Chester/London/Manchester always stopped there. I never got off there, but people would always get on to go to the next stop of Rhyl where the amusement park is.

Ah, good old Llanfair P.G.!
I'm sure someone has planted one in the area since there are quite a few boxes on Anglesey.

One of my (American) friends is able to just rattle off that name. It's one of her party tricks (especially after a few pints). I always get tongue tied around the "gyllgogery" bit and give up.

Welcome to Wales, Cadenza! Wales is beautiful and I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Making it down to Cardiff was always on my list of things to do when I was living over there, but I never got around to it. Just means I'll have to make another trip back! It'll be nice that my lonely little box won't be the only AQ listed letterbox!

Once the good weather comes I hope to have a chance this year to get further afield and try for some of these AQ boxes which are in Scotland. Fingers crossed.

Hi Cadenza, it's almost creepy, but you just described my sister too. She's American, married to an Englishman. I taught her LBing in the states and now she's going crazy over there. Ironically, like you, not much LBing around her.

You guys will definitely have to meet. Plant the boxes, she will come to Wales (hopefully with me)!

Y'all are great, and Don, you always make me smile!! I miss you and Gwen already. :)

I'll have to get working planting some boxes. For now I'll have to find some spots in the city. When I get things sorted out (I'm looking for work right now and not having much luck), I will for sure head out and get some plants done. It's always hard to keep urban boxes alive, but if you don't have a car, it may be the only choice for the time being. Maybe the grounds surrounding Cardiff Castle will have some unmaintained spots.

I need to learn to pronounce the name of the train station too. My Welsh friend back in Idaho tried to teach me, but I think it was more so that he could show off. It would be fun to do a plant near there just to use the name. You gotta love Welsh!!

I'm going back to watching Gordon Ramsey now, and I just finished a sausage roll. I think I'm starting to fit in this area. :) British life is suiting me well.

by the way, thanks for the link to the off-Dartmoor boxes. I think that's where I saw the boxes I was thinking of. You saved me the trouble of looking through all the links (not that I won't end up going through them all again anyway). I had bookmarked it on my computer, but I didn't have them marked on my husband's computer, which is the one I really use now.

Hi Cadenza,

If you can hold on a little longer, I will be going to Risca at the beginning of April and hope to plant a box there. It is on the bus line from Cardiff. My Husband grew up there and we thought it would be fun to place a box there. I will let you know when it is there.

I'd love it!! I was going to get on and tell you I will try to plant a few boxes in Cardiff before you come. Newport and Risca aren't far at all. I'd laugh at a Risca box, because my maiden name is Riska and my husband is always teasing me about my name not being Czech, but stolen from a Welsh town. I tell him that it was my grandmother's side that was Welsh and English, not my grandfather's, but to no avail . . .

Anyway, I'd like to get some boxes in this area, and if you think you might make it around these parts too, it would be added incentive. Let me know when you are around and maybe we can arrange an exchange if you aren't too busy.

We tried to find some of Ian Kirkpatrick's boxes with no luck though we were sure we were in the right area. Has anyone else had any luck?

Hi all,

Thanks for the replys. Sorry to be quiet for a little while. The little pirate has been sick so I have not had time to be on line. Right Now it looks like we will be in Scotland April 1-5. London for the Good Friday and Saturday (but maybe Reading). Wales Easter Sunday through Wednesday. Leicester The Thursday through Saturday and Iceland on the 14th and 15th. Plans are right now to plant a box in Scotland at the Heights of Fodderty at the Neil Gunn memorial, Somewhere in Risca in South Wales, and some yet to be determined place in the Leicester area.

We are are looking forward to the trip, hunting for whatever boxes we can (my sister is interested in the Ben Nevis boxes), and would love to meet up if we are ever near people who share this great past time.

Cheers

Wow, you are really going to be getting around. I could probably get to any of those areas except Iceland. Iceland would be a problem :-D

The most fun would probably be Wales as perhaps Cadenza would be free, and Diltian Martian mentioned getting across to Wales, though he might be busy over Easter.

How about it folks is anyone else able to meet up with busters pirates?

Wales would be great for a meet up. We will be visiting an elderly relative so we need "excuses" to get out and let her rest. Also we will have a car at that point in the trip making life more managable.

YT- not up for a flight to iceland? There is supposed to be a box at the blue lagoon that we will be going for. I am sure that it is going to be an exhausting trip but the chance to meet other boxers just makes it that much more fun!!!!!

Hi,

The Heights of Fodderty is but a stone's throw from here (we're near Beauly, which is about 10 miles from Strathpeffer), so we could perhaps meet while you're here.

Hi, Katrina of Buster Pirates-

We're about 30 minutes outside of London and have been very busy planting boxes. If you're looking for a short jaunt. Would love to do an exchange too!

Safe journeys,
