Tie Dyed Cards?
Board: LTC: Tips, Questions, and Stuff

I'm in this tracker (http://www.atlasquest.com/showinfo.html?gTrackerId=5777), where folks use a deck of playing cards as the base for the LTC. I'd like to color the cards in some way to fully mask/cover up the standard card graphics - except for the upper and lower corners that tell you what card it is.

So far I've tried distressed inks, but they won't stick to the card, even after using a perfect pouch.
I've also tried a variety of spray paints, but I'm not getting a good blend of colors, it looks kinda flat & boring.

I was hoping to get kind of a marbleized or tie-dyed look for the background. Has anyone else ever done something along these lines successfully? Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks!

I've used Alcohol Inks (made by Ranger)on regular playing cards to add color to the card but these inks don't become opaque. They allow you to see through the color to what was beneath it. So it's more like a stain than a paint.
They will give you a nice tie-dye look if you use a couple of them.

Not sure if you wanted to completely mask out the graphics or just distract from them.
To completely mask it out, I wonder if an acrylic craft paint would work.

Wyvern
Even sanding the card down a bit to take off some of the gloss will take off the background...jackbear has used that technique to make the playing card looked pretty distress. After that coating is gone, inks will stick better to it.

You can try a product called GESSO. It's found in the artist/ painting dept at craft stores and is applied with a paint brush. It is white (can be tinted) or black opaque so will cover your cards but may take a few layers. It dries quickly and costs 6-14 dollars depending on the brand you buy. It is normally used to cover artists canvas' before painting and if you apply it thickly you'll have some texture.
The directions on the bottle claim it won't crack or peel when dry and it's bendable which would be great for playing card use.

I wonder if it would work to mask the portions that you want to remain visible, then stamp the entire card with Versamark ink. Then you could sprinkle different colored embossing powders in the pattern you want and heat.
I've never embossed an area that big before, so I don't know if it would "stick".

I just saw something like this in this book I picked up the other day by Tim Holtz called A Compendium of Curiosities. Am going to post a pic of the page now and will post the link.

If it looks good I can type out the directions since I see they aren't really readable in the pic.

I have it too, and I HIGHLY recommend it! So many fun things to try! And the picture Miss C posted is a really easy technique - you just need alcohol inks and a can of compressed air. :-)

Even better!! I know he posts almost everything on YouTube and hated buying the book, but it's like a grocery list for me. Plus I used a 40% off coupon.

I used it on an altered book and it cracked and flaked so bad I ditched the project.

You can definitely spend lots of time going from one tutorial to another... I've done it myself, too. I guess I should have warned you!
