Series of two in different states?
Board: State: Maine

I am going to Florida next week to visit my best friend whom I recently introduced to letterboxing. She is enjoying the activity immensely and we plan to do some boxing while I'm down there. I was thinking it would be cool if we could plant a box symbolizing our friendship. I'm thinking we'd plant a box there and one here in Maine where I am. Does it count as a series if there are only two boxes and how do you tie them in where they are in different states? I'm sure the answer is as plain as the nose on my face but I'm too excited about vacation and coming up blank. LOL! Any ideas?

Well - the easiest way to link them as a series is as a "mystery" location. If you try to put in a state - the other won't show. But if its listed as mystery, mystery - you also run the risk of it never being searched for as it won't show up in any state search...

Hmm...I never thought of the mystery angle but yeah, as you said if it's mystery, mystery it might not ever be found. I myself have never been able to find a mystery one (and I read mysteries all the time but I've apparently never picked up the skill LOL). Maybe we could just give them the same title but post in our states and not count it as a series? Then no one but us would know it's a series but we could mention it in the clues? Or is that weird? Having only planted a grand total of four boxes I'm still working on the proper way to handle this stuff!!. Thanks for you help!

There are plenty of 'series' listed as single boxes... well sort of. There's the "Great Pezzy Road Show" that has boxes all over the place... and there were all of those I Scream for Ice Cream boxes that could loosley be linked together... I guess aslong as you list them with the link mentioned in the clues, they could be a 'series' in theory.

There are two kinds of series:

  1. Two or more letterboxes in close proximity that you'd expect people to get in a single outing.
  2. Two or more letterboxes related in theme but located in totally different areas that you would not expect people to find in a single outing or even in a specific order.

For the later, just list the boxes independently, and you can link the clues together in the clues for the boxes. Don't use the "series" option while listing boxes that fall into the second category of series.

But, but what about this?
3. Two or more stamps in close proximity that are close enough to state borders to cross into two or more states and which you'd expect people to get in a single outing.

Bored at work.

List the location from which trailhead you'd expect people to use to find the boxes. Ultimately, the location is where people drive to. The clue is where people walk to from wherever it is they park.

If you require someone to actually get back in the car to drive to a different trailhead for the next box in the series, it shouldn't be listed as a series--that would essentially count as two outings and should be listed as such.

Yep, Maine and Florida so that would be quite a drive from box to box! LOL!!

So basically we will plant the boxes as singles but in the clues we can mention "if you're in the area of XYZ look up the sister box to this" etc. Does that sound about right?

Check out "Anniversary Series" in my plants in my logbook. We plant a new one every year, in the location we visit for our wedding anniversary. So far there are 3 in Maine and 1 in NH.

Hi Maine Dane- I'm just reading through threads (and haven't finished this one yet); but my two cents on the mystery stamps is GOOGLE. And notes- when I think I've figured out where one is, I create a note, and add it to a map I created on Google Maps just to 'pin' the mystery stamps I think I 'found'.

In the box you could also put a note that there is a sister stamp in another state and give the name. Pretty much the same thing as putting the info in the clue, but more 'personal'. I like finding info and fun facts in the boxes :D

Hey Phazia! Thanks to you too for the input! I'm so glad I posted the original question because this has been very helpful. I've only got five boxes under my belt as plants so I'm still learning :)

I went to Florida a couple of weeks ago and we decided on our stamps. We each carved ours and she's planting hers this week. We decided to use the same name but we'll put our state at the end of the name of the box so it will a little different. And inside in the logbook we'll put the note that says something like "please check out the sister stamp in X titled ..." The worst thing that happens is no one makes the connection on the two boxes if they do find mine here in Maine and hers in Florida but we can live with that. I just want people to get out there and get boxing! LOL!! I'm still really surprised at how many people have never heard of the activity.
