Being the nerd that I am, I emailed Lenny Lampel the Natural Resources Coordinator who’s office is in Charlotte in regards to any cicada research projects. He is spearheading a Cicada Watch for Mecklenburg County, NC. “Mecklenburg (and counties surrounding) residents are being asked to report findings of cicada activity, survey areas where emergences are expected, monitor locations throughout the emergence period and follow up on leads of cicada activity. To sign up or get more information, contact Lenny Lampel at 704-432-1390 or lenny.lampel@mecklenburgcountync.gov.”

However, there is a larger effort to collect data and map the emergence of Brood XIX everywhere where they appear. It's called the Magicicada Mapping project and it's run through Dr. John Cooley from the University of Connecticut. The website is www.magicicada.org. You can enter your observations directly through the website. All of the data that we generate from our Cicada Watch will go to the mapping project as well.

There are also 6 research projects that you can participate in including the hunt for the blue-eyed cicada! Don’t forget the prospects of reporting and joining the confersation on these social networking sites.

...survey areas where emergences are expected, monitor locations throughout the emergence period ...

I had to re-read this to see if I could understand what emergencies the little critters might be expected to experience ...

a crafty wreath with the cicada shells

My sister made a tower of toothpicks, then painted cicada shells in neon colours and hung them on the tower.

Sadly, this was years ago, and I doubt I could find any pictures. But it was kinda cool, funny, and weird all at the same time.
