Illinoisan LBer coming through SW Michigan!

Hey there,

I will be doing a small road trip over spring break to visit some of the places I might be doing my internship this summer. I was wondering if anyone could make suggestions about the best boxes for out of towners, I would prefer mostly drive bys and less than a mile, since this is a "business trip" and nothing more than 10 miles out of the way. I'm very high maintenance I know : P

Any suggestions would be great, Thanks!

Here is my Michigan leg of my trip.

You're going on a business trip to Twin Lake? My "Welcome to Michigan" box is a quickie as you enter the state. I have a bunch of boxes in the Muskegon area, but nothing is a drive-by... sorry (clues are all on LbNA).

Looks like you'll be driving right by/through our area.
Not too much in the way of drive-bys around here... sorry about that. : (

It would be fun to meet up for an exchange though -- if you're able.

Michigan letterboxing advice from springchick and doglvrs. That's like ice cream advice from Ben & Jerry.

I second the recommendation for Welcome to Michigan.

Also:
Sarett Nature Center, Benton Harbor - LbNA
Along the River, St. Joseph - AQ, not a drive-by, but not too long
Lookout, St. Joseph - LbNA

Have fun and let us know what you find.

SW MI has some fabulous boxes, but getting many of them means getting into our state parks, which is a good thing. But if you don't have time for that, here are a few ideas:

SAUGATUCK has many boxes that are very short walks and essentially drive-bys. Most are carved by Penguin Patrol and are beautiful carves. You will have to do a little planning ahead, but here are my suggestions for quicker boxes in Saugatuck: Dropping Anchor, There's So Much Snow in Michigan, Spring Wreath, Read, Set Sail, The Lucky Cow, The Great American PinUp Series: Valerie, and The Interurban.

DOUGLAS is right next door to Saugatuck: Try these: Cuppa Respite, Antique Treasures, and Ye Ole Fishing Hole. These are also carved by Penguin Patrol.

SOUTH HAVEN has a newer driveby which I haven't done: Eastern Screech Owl. I also have planted a driveby in Glenn, MI which is near South Haven called Pier Cove Park.

ST. JOSEPH has Look Out!! and Along the River (half an hour, maybe? But it's a nice walk).

BENTON HARBOR has Sarrett Nature Center which will take about ten minutes. Cool hiding spot.

I would also definitely recommend SpringChick's Welcome to Michigan! I just found that a couple of weeks ago and you won't be disappointed.

Now if you have time and want to take a short hike, there are a whole lotta other great boxes that fit that category!

Enjoy your Spring Break.

Any chance you will put clues on AQ?

I would like to. Once I finalize my dates/times with these agencies I will have a better idea how much free time I will have.

Ok, I know you said no more than 10 miles out of the way, and the need for drive by.....but......

When you are on US-31 and hit Holland, if you switch to Eastbound I-196 and go about 15 miles, you be in Hudsonville. There is a fabulous nature center about a mile off the highway. There are at least 16 boxes in the nature center. So not drive-bys, but they are fairly easy walks and they mostly go in "1-leads-to-the-next-one" configuration (meaning you don't have to start at the beginning of the trail again after each one). So even though they are not drive-bys, you'll get a lot of opportunity for making 1 stop!

If this search link works out correctly, it should be the first 4 results on this page:

You stand corrected, lol. Welcome back, good to see a familiar name back with the pack. I have fallen off, some what, since my bro, Safari Man, passed away in 2013, but still check in some now and then to read some favorite boards. I found this by looking at your profile recent messages, hee hee.....

Hey Okie Dog! You got me there, thanks for digging that out! Things change...

I was just thinking about Glenn the other day... I am in a CD Postal ring that is all about AQ and one of the requirements is to include a song that is about a deceased letterboxer. Of course he was my first thought and I found a great song. It was a great loss to letterboxing, but I am sure for you and your family even more.

Thanks for the welcome back!
