Occasionally a shovel would have its uses. Or a trowel at least. I'm thinking vintage box in a decaying tree, lotta sawdust.... Also handy for boxes under ice.

I took a folding camp shovel once to a box, we had visited before since it had a snake at it the first time. The second time the snake wasn't going to keep us from the box. It wasn't there when we got there so it didn't lose it's head over that box!!!

Hey...I've found that first box. Right after I started letterboxing I went to New York. Only had time to find 2 and that was one of them...how weird.

LOL, yeah...how ever did I end up with 4 young children being such a superdork who never gets any. ;-)
As for the shovel, clearly the author has no idea, however you may need one winter boxing in New England!

Or maybe we adopt abandoned letterboxes with those "baby HHs" along for the ride.

We planted a box once under a guardrail piece. Our friedns were new to LBing and didn't think to look under the piece that goes into the gorund. They had emailed us and said something about bringing a shovel the next time....

Also for turning rocks over. However, the walking stick works pretty well. Would also be much harder to explain being in the woods with a shovel. A trowel you could actually hide in a backpack.

letterboxes are laid all the time, laid carefully into little cubbyholes and hiding spots.
..... OH, you meant letterboxers .... now why would you want to put one of them in a hiding spot?

Finally read the article. Are there other articles out there that talk about letterboxing? If you have a link to some please post (annoying or not).

You might like to subscribe to the News About Letterboxing forum. Ryan and others will post links to letterboxing news articles when they find them.

I believe there is a Letterboxing News board to see any recent articles that Ryan and others usually runs across. Look at Board Settings to find the long list for that particular board. Then start from the first to read them all. Some are good and some aren't so good towards boxing. These are articles that are found on the web and in newspapers around the country. Not what would be considered teaching aids, if you are looking for that type thing, look in the help pages here on AQ. Also check out the Newboxers list on Yahoo, Silent Doug's site there as well.

IMO the difference between a good article on LBing and an annoying one has to do with whether or not the author has ever been LBing in the first place. This article read like one that had been assigned but that the author tried to write from their desk. They tried to contact LBers on the phone or over the internet and got no response or a response that they didn't answer questions for the press, and since they were being so close-mouthed and secretive the author had nothing better to say. It was obvious they had never actually gone LBing.
