Pre-Dating Finds to get First Finder Credit....

First Finds are cool. I like 'em but am usually happy enuf to find the box at all. Some folks REALLY like 1st finders.

What I do not understand is folks that "Find" boxes either before the first finder finds or even before a planter plants just to get that ellusive 1st finder credit. It's like cheating at solitare, it makes no sense....

And while I'm on this particular rant, I also don't understand people "Saving" up finds to record all in one day for the purpose of getting extra "Traveled between finds" I mean really, recording 65 finds in one day say between Seattle and Boise? How the heck does one accomplish this....who are you foolin'...yourself not anyone else.

you know who you are you silly person

I'm not sure why anyone would even do that--it's not like AQ keeps track of first finders. There's not even an accurate way of determining who a first finder is since most people don't record their finds at all. Anyone that pre-dates a find just for 'first finder' credit is deluding themselves.

I also don't understand people "Saving" up finds to record all in one day for the purpose of getting extra "Traveled between finds" I mean really, recording 65 finds in one day say between Seattle and Boise?

I suspect you're seeing "evil" where there never was any. Imagine you travel from Seattle to Boise. Chances are, you don't record each find immediately upon finding it. For most people, you find lots of boxes, then when you get home, you record all the finds. People who aren't fussy about find dates will just take the default find date (today) to speed up the process. It happens a lot, and it's perfectly understandable.

I also have no idea what you mean by "traveled between finds." Whether you record a bunch of finds on one day or spread them out for several days, it makes no difference to the "miles per find" calculation. Dates aren't part of that calculation.

We used to think First Finders were cool. That was when 'boxes in our area were few and far between. We'd LONG to go find a 'box and when one was posted, YIPEE, we'd go out and get it. There was another letterboxer in our area who loved FFs too and we'd had a non-spoken competition for them which was fun. He moved to Canada years ago though. . .

What we think is even more fun than FFs now are old 'boxes that have a whole bunch of signature stamps in their logbooks. You'll find really full logs in 'touristy' areas like Mt. Rushmore and Boston where signature stamps are from states all over the U.S. We love going through the logbooks to see if we recognize a 'boxer we've heard of only on AQ. It feels like a celebrity has been there!

Another fun find is the 'box that's been there for years and has only 2 or 3 finders, some a year or more before your find. Makes the find even more special when it's deemed too tough or too long a hike for anyone but hard-core letterboxers. Green Tortuga and Funhog have plants in this category.

Happy 'boxing!

As Ryan stated, people who do that are deluding themselves, but are you certain they are doing that? Say if the planter first posted it on LbNA first and later posted it on here (weeks, months. or years later). If you are only looking at the AQ plant date, then they might of found it before it was listed on AQ. Another possibility is that they recorded a find for the wrong letterbox. Maybe there is a box with a similar name in a similar area or maybe even a different area and the people did not pay attention. I tend to look up the city to record a find, but people can search by letterbox name.

A box might have been planted a long time ago, and then listed on AQ recently. If someone found the box before it was listed and then records the real date it was found on AQ, it could predate the AQ listing date.

Like when you see a box planted on a particular date and it is "found" on that same date, probably by whoever :::went with:::: the person who planted the box.

Around here a find may be found within hours of it being planted... and not by the people who went with the planter, so just be careful when you accuse people of incorrect finds. I know you aren't accusing anyone right now, but I am just saying don't assume that if it is found on the same date it was planted it was found by someone who went with the planter. I myself have found a few the same day they were planted, legitimately.

Cheers!

You talking about me???? If someone is talking about me, that means they are not talking about someone else, and i could always use the publicity.

IMHO: i wouldn't try and and over think why someone would or would not change the date on the find day. And maybe someone, *ME*, didn't even think along the lines of mileage traveled. Is that really something that others look up and keep track of? Seriously???? Is it time to make my logbook private? NOW i totally understand why others do.

Like when you see a box planted on a particular date and it is "found" on that same date, probably by whoever :::went with:::: the person who planted the box. Uh....not a find people. If you want the image, find and dandy, but it's not a find.

Another possibility....Some people do not give a rats behind about the numbers on AQ. They mark finds on AQ simply to get the box off their search returns. So if they WERE with the person that planted it, they may not count it as a find in their own head, but on AQ there's no way of marking it, without using "ignore".

Since I started boxing I thought there should be an "assist" count in the PFX. For those that you helped to plant, but it's not actually you're box :)

Where is this "miles per find" calculation? I would only find that mildly interesting, but I've never seen or heard of it before.
