Quote I have helped people by taking their printed and solved clues and literally just placing them on the floor around the room in a general "design of the park" to help them group the obvious stuff,

Sounds like my filing system in my office... :)

Quote some I was completely clueless about

I still have some of those too! But my overall master list does seem to be getting a lot smaller. With diligence and time I hope to get the rest in 2008! How's that for a goal?

But I've never found more than a few at each outing so I'm not cut out for a tour leader, I'm afraid.

Whomever jumps in and says they'll lead the tour, count me in on the group! Unless it's raining and cold, I'd like to get a few of the ones I don't have.

Ditto this for me. And I don't even care if it's raining or cold. My last trip there was both rainy and cold, and the other was outrageously hot and humid, so obviously I don't care. I can only do Sunday on MLK weekend, but have nothing planned as yet for President's day. I do have all my clues neatly sorted by location as much as possible, but would not claim to be an expert.

And ditto to what Eidelon and 123Family said. If I help lead, I'd do like with my sister for some of the vaguer clues (ie all those ones with pictures)--"Look at these and then keep your eyes open." Some you can sort of figure out if you've been to the park a bunch of times, but others it's just a matter of good observation skills and eyesight. I had to abandon her to go find one mystery box I knew of, so if I'll do it to my sister, I'll do it to perfect strangers, too!

Uuhghhghha! .........I think I might be able to help here! I can take ya round the rock!

I will do it but you must do the "heavy lifting" so to speak ! Print out your picture clues and memorize what you need to!

I will box you to dark if that is what you want ...plus I know what stuff is fun and what to avoid as a Tourist! Hit me up off line so I can make a day off at work when I need to! T rex :)

Quote It would be a challenge to create a “Visitor’s Guide to Letterboxing at Stone Mountain Park”, but perhaps an interesting exercise nevertheless.

Here's a different idea, but one that might be popular: I presume that Stone Mountain Park is, in fact, a park, and as such there are maps of the park available? Perhaps someone who lives nearby could pick up a pile of those maps. Then anyone who plans a trip to the park can contact him for a copy. Having the map well in advance would help in planning a strategy.

Yes, I kinda made the assumption that folks knew there are maps available online.

OK. Now, seeing as how this map is divided into 12 sections, perhaps they could be numbered, like 1-4 across and A-C down. And then the known letterbox locations could be described by which section they're in. I dunno that there'd be any point to doing anything with the "close-up" view that overlaps B2, B3, C2, C3, and a tiny bit of B4 and C4.

Yes, that is certainly one way that someone could organize their clues. But there are also a good number of mysteries, as well as photo clues that you might not know the location of until you get there and explore a bit.

One "problem" with the boxes at SMP is simply that many of the clues are "find the thing in this picture" and it may or may not be something you would ever walk by unless trying random trails in random places, not just the labelled ones. So while people get big eyes knowing there are 140+ boxes there, that does NOT mean they are easy to find.

You might think that would be the case, but it's not. This map is good for basic information and navigation within the park -- via vehicle.

I've grouped boxes by routes from likely parking areas, some of which are not on the map. Without having found most of the boxes in the park (as I and a few others have) and knowing that place very well, you could probably estimate the approximate location of a dozen-and-a-half boxes with that map.

Eidolon posited:

That's where having a guide prepared by someone who knows the park very well is invaluable. FTR: I'll never claim to have as "intimate" knowledge of the place as T Rex, Hawkeye, and drgdlg, but I can hold my own, and my "to do list" is down to only 8 of the 150 (no less) active boxes in the park.

Nota bene: none of the lists, grouping and guides out there pinpoint the exact location of boxes, landmarks and other vague oddities unless they're already pinpointed in the published clue. So you still have to work for the boxes, especially the Mysteries.

You still have to have a little fun out there!! My challenge is to find vague landmarks that the other locals aren't familiar with!

Don't make me take a trip or two over there and play catch-up!!! I have just been lazy so have something like 40 to go, most of which I know where the "item in question" is located, just haven't gone to get the box yet. LOL

Well _THEY_ have no room to gloat if you want to play that game, only one of them can. LOL

But contrary to how it may seem, I am not a competitive boxer; I figure I will get to them eventually so seldom rush out for new ones. You know, look at all those fun charts and graphs I have and you will see that less than 1/2 my finds are in Georgia (which is kinda scary to me actually).

Now there's a slam!

One of these days, I'll get things logged in, and then I can gloat. It really isn't fair yet, when I've only logged through about last June.

But we know the truth.........

But contrary to how it may seem, I am not a competitive boxer - Eidolon

Not competitive, but certainly obsessive. The intensity is the same; there just isn't a drive to beat someone else.

Artemis, who is supposedly much too busy with year end "stuff" to be playing on line.

We were out boxing before the LBSE event last May. We left home about 5:30; had the HH puppies who weren't supposed to be on the mountain; and were already about an hour late getting to the event when we started after the Sam Adams. We just couldn't "get on the right track" with that one, and Hawkeye had called over an hour earlier to say she'd brought breakfast, so we decided to give up to hunt another day. We'd never gone back to try again. Oread and I did a day without dogs at the mountain, so we snagged it and a few others as well. Eidolon was home dog-sitting.

Artemis, who is actually the better clue reader!

I got "on the right track" totally by accident. I had actually given up (it was over 100 degrees that day) when I chanced on it by accident.

hi,
I would be interested in having a copy of box grouping at Stone Mountain that divides up the mountain into sections and groups boxes accordingly.
I will be going to Ellijay, Atlanta area, then Warm Springs for 2 weeks at the end of September.
Thanks in advance if you are still offering this information.
