today was our 2nd try at geocaching. it was cut short when we found a womans purse stuffed under a bush!!! it was brown/ tan and it may totally be an imitation but it looked like a Coach purse. doug reached for it thinking that was were the geocach was hidden. he tells me there is stuff in it. a wallet, an Ipod loose stuff in the purse. he puts it back and walks away. I tell him he has his finger prints all over it and crap if something bad went down here he's gonna be in trouble. (yes Ive seen too many Law and Order shows) so I put on my big ass mittens on and go over to look. Meanwhile I had doug call the police. doug call APD!!!! boy I hope I never really need to get ahold of a cop cuz we never did get through. I found an ID. a blonde woman in her 20's, blue eyes. named (I believe but Im so bad with names. ) Roslind Marie Thompson.
a rent-a-cop (I mean a walmart security) drives by and Doug calls him over. we explain that we found the purse while geocaching. as he asks if we found an ID I hand it over to him. he said he would take it over to walmart. and that was it.
I hope we did the right thing and they figure something out. It just seemed too suspicious to me. the purse was ransacked (although there is women that keep their purses like that all the time.) but there is no way someone dropped it. it was well hidden, we only found it cuz we were digging around. there was loose credit cards, paper maybe receipts, a lighter, a new tampon in a ziplock baggie. and that Ipod, an older Nano 8GB black. the wallet was still there although we didnt open it to see if there was still any cash. it was all too weird for me. now I have that same feeling I had when that woman did a hit and run infront of mom and me about a month ago.
doug thinks someone stole it and stashed it to go get it later. oh there was also some kind of pretty perfume bottle laying by the bag but I didnt reach into the bushed for it. I was too freaked out at this point. I google searched for this ladys name and found nothing but I may be misspelling the name.
interesting enough day huh?

that would totally freak me out as well. did you get the walmart guys name so you could follow up on it? you could always phone the police later and say you were just checking on the purse because it is still bothering you. that way you would know if the walmart guy followed through and reported it.

I think you did the right thing. Curiousity would get to me, I think I'd call the police (and that's terrible you couldn't get through) and try to find out what had happened. If you didn't see any cash, maybe someone stole the purse for just that.

We had something similar happen over the summer. We took my daycare kids on a hike (there was about 9 of us). At one point on this hike we were following the path and it kinda just stopped. So we continued on in the general direction we were heading. We came to a secluded area and saw a bunch of brand new backpacks laying around. As my husband went over to check them he noticed they were full of what we thought to be stolen electronics. Computers, printers, radios etc...and they were all smashed up. Now they couldn't have been there that long because the backpacks were in brand new condition. Well, as we walked a little bit further we noticed a woman's fanny pack with the contents spread out all over the place. She had a high school ID card, 2 patient IDs from a local rehab place one from 2001 and one from 2002, a pen, lighter, tissues and get this her social security card. Now her SS card wasn't worn or torn or destroyed by being outside, so again I don't think this stuff was there very long. I started to wonder if we walked further....we would find her next???? Well my hubby is an advisor for the police explorers and they were having a meeting that night. He called one of the cops he advises with and told her what we found and where we found it. She asked if we were able to gather up the information and he could bring it to the meeting that night. I had a baggie full of wipes so I took out a wipe, picked the stuff up and put it in the baggie.
He brought the stuff to the meeting and they looked it up. This girl has had no current license, address, job or anything since 2002...that was the last time she registered for anything. OK, but her SS card was not damaged being outside??? I don't think it has been there for 5 years? Very odd. They said they would keep her things and put it on file. She also wasn't listed as a missing person, but htey said that's what she might be.
It was kinda creepy...and my daycare kids had quite the story to tell their parents at pick up time :)

Two things that stand out as odd in this story.

The fact that you couldn't get through on the phone to the police. Is there a local non-emergency phone number? You might want to prgram it into your phones.

The rent-a-cop offering to take the purse to Wal-Mart. What good would that do?

I'm sure the police aren't going to "bust" you for putting fingerprints on a purse you found. You probably couldn't get a print off the fabric of the purse, anyway. Besides, you are the finder, not the stealer.

Just my thoughts,
Lisa

these stories are so creepy. that is so sad about the girl, if she hasnt registered for anything since then...chances are something happened. was it an area for rock climbing? being a recreational (non professional) rock climber, ive heard many stories of people who just grab gear and go out and die from not knowing what they were doing. maybe she got really injured and sombody came by and took her to a hospital and didnt get her purse and maybe she died in the hospital....wow, im just making stories up, but these things it really gets your imagination going. so many many many different things could have happened. please keep me posted of any updates.
