What is the most creative/interesting/bold urban hide that you have made or found?

Mine is Eagle Gate, in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. I found it in February 2013, but the latest logger didn't find it. It is a clever hide, so I hope that it is still there.

Not long after joining, I read a thread about folding stamps. Intrigued, I carved/made one and put it in a bottle preform with a magnet. It’s in a spot in town that hundreds of people pass within a foot or so of every day.

Still going strong: https://www.atlasquest.com/showinfo.html?boxId=276854

I'm intrigued. Is there a seam where it folds, or did you carve it so that it folds in white space?

I carved long skinny stamp then cut in half wherever that fell. I put a piece of strong tape on the back and used that as the hinge. It actually prints without showing the seam.

I got the preforms from Steve Spangler:

If you use preforms replace the lids that they come with with a regular soda bottle cap - they have a raised gasket in them. Absolutely waterproof... well, as long as the last user replaces the cap properly. And bombproof, the only one I’ve ever had fail was ran over by a riding lawnmower.

I had never heard of a preform. That was interesting.

ECP reminded me that instead of preforms, for that box we used two diabetes test strip containers taped end to end. A log in one the folding stamp in the other. Sorry for the confusion.

We have used preforms for other hides and I love them... just not on that one. I just looove getting old! :)

By the way, for those not familiar with them preforms are the starting form of 2 liter bottles. They are heated and air is forced in.

You can use clear packing tape or duct tape. I always preferred packing tape. Haven't done one in a long time. Put two layers of tape on back of stamp, *then* cut the stamp down to the tape with a razor blade, but not through the tape. Cut the tape around stamp. Fold the stamp back.

You can fit a larger image into a container it wouldn't ordinarily fit into. Good for film canisters or other small containers. You don't see the seam when you ink it.

Very creative. Never heard of doing this before but it's as simple as ever. I'm always surprised at the creativity of our letterboxing community.

I have some preforms. I just never thought of using them for a stamp before. I should have since I have found an unfolded stamp (and it's log) in a glass pop bottle. (It is narrow enough to fit through the mouth of the bottle.)

I wish I could claim it as an original idea but I got it from another boxer many years ago. But as you say we are a creative bunch. :) I actually wish I was more creative. I have seen so many things that just blow my mind.

I have used space age plastic centrifuge tubes I got online from some site that sells supplies to labs. The hinged stamp idea was great for that. Then use cash register paper for the logbook. Great for small spaces. And you can put camo tape around them if you don't want them to be clear. And you can still find film canisters on Ebay.

I have a couple of tubes I never used. Now I'm thinking I want to use them in a plant again!

An urban one that I've seen and loved was an electrical outlet in a bus stop.
If I remember right the face of it would side up to access the stamp.

Been to Oregon, have you. I'm pretty sure I know the one you are talking about. And it is awesome!
