I keep my carves in a separate little 3 x 5 spiral bound book, and have used a lot of different sizes of logbooks for my finds. Right now I have a book about 5 x 8.
I stamp finds in chronological order, and put the HH images right next to the stamp they were found with.
I use a lot of black for images because that seems to be the most common color, but if a stamp looks like it would be happy with brown or green or blue, I use those instead. I also carry red and purple ink pads, but that's it. I believe the image belongs to the finder, and I clean off the stamp afterwards if I have sullied a lovely, colorful stamp with just one color. The back flyleaf of my logbook is where I wipe off the black ink. Water for cleaning? just dew from the grass or a couple of drips from my water bottle and a hearty huff.

I carry baby wipes in a ziploc. Use to clean stamps, kids faces, scrapes and what knot.

I do not put my own stamps in a logbook. If I go on a trip with several, let's say, beach--theme boxes, I try to put them together. But if I am boxing from home, just chronological, including boxes and hitchhikers. I do try to notate what town the box was in. But sometimes, they do get crammed in, helter skelter, if I am running low on space. At an event, I try to keep all the stamps found near each other in the log, including people's sig stamp exchanges. Boxing in the woods, I mostly just use one color, unless the clue specifies to bring other colors. At an event, I am sitting around with lots of colors.
Also, sometimes an imprint doesn't work [ie the stamp is soaking wet or I accidentally do it upside down]. My rule is two attempts to print, and that's all.

For traditional finds, I stamp on the right side, and on the opposite (left side) I stamp in the Hitchhiker. I try to use the colors indicated (or what make sense - i.e. green for flower stem) or vary the colors on each page.

I also write in the date, name of box, and town where found. I indicate which box the HH was found in, and when I replant it, I write down where I left it.

I usually put 3-5 images on a page. For me personally, if I have more than that, I feel visually overloaded.
======
I also have separate logbooks for my carves, for my postals, and for events/personal travelers.

You'll figure out what is most comfortable for you :)

skootch and I share a logbook. I will put 3-5 images on each page, whatever fits, and will start with a new page on a new day. All chronological.

I like color, so I carry all the colors with me, and will clean off a stamp using stamp cleaner and a soft toothbrush, if not that, water and a paper towel, or a baby wipe. Our logbook is very colorful, and the stamps are put back, clean and neat for the next person. It drives many of my Minnesotan boxer friends around the bend! HH go next to the stamp they were found with. I'll label name of stamp, who did it, where I found it, and the date I found it.

Stamps that I have carved, and will be planting from the back forward, and so the last few pages of the logbook are often 2 sided.

I have two log books. One I use for just traditional finds and HHs. (Occasionally exchanges end up there, if I exchange with people on the trail).

The second logbook is for everything else: event stamps, table toppers, HIPS, postals, most exchanges, stamps I have carved for others or stamps I planted.

I use colors whenever possible or appropriate. I write info like box name, planter, carver, location, date found, etc.

I'm curious as to how others in the community organize their logbooks.

I started out stamping all stamps in the same logbook; ones I made, letterbox (boxes, hitchhikers, etc.) and geocache stamps. Now I have three different logbooks for each of these types.

I have three logbooks. One is a little one that never leaves home—this is everything I have carved. One is for exchanges. And the big one is for everything else—events, traditionals, cooties, hitchhikers. I try to keep events separate but if I end up desparate for space, spaces on those pages will get filled in.

This is pretty close to how we have laid out our books, other than I stamp on the left and write on the right. We have filled up multiple books over the years. Boxes in a series go on one page as long as they fit. Stamp ink color is whatever color best matches the stamp theme.

I have a small book for exchanges and PTs which stays in my bag at all times. I have a book at home for stamps I have carved. I have a book for traditional or postal finds and HHs that are with them. I log next to the HH which box I found it in and, later, which box I place it into. I have a large book for events. Sounds like a lot but it works for me.

I've been told baby wipes are bad for the stamp. Something in the wipe messes with the rubber material. Has anyone else heard this?

I just fill one logbook with everything and so it sort of goes by date. Personal travellers and table top boxes annoy me because I'm more interested to be on the trails, so lately, I don't bother with those, unless it is a small dinner event. Hitchhikers all.go in the same book, and I just fill it.

I use whatever colors I want, or the color that is specified by the owner of the stamp. Some people are picky.

8 do have a separate logbook for my own carves. That way, when the box goes missing, I have at least one image. And I don't worry about losing the book.

I agree on the logbook for my own carves. It's fun. I have an image of all the stamps I've carved. I just had to start a 2nd one this year.

I also have a separate books for postals and exchanges. I love logbooks.

I'm sure that baby wipes would dry out the rubber due to the cleansing agent however, I do not have personal experience with that. I just blot with a paper towel.

I have a couple logbooks that are a little different. Besides the typical logbooks of plants, finds, and events, I have a couple logbooks that are specific to long trails I've boxed, and these are my favorites. One is for the Connecticut section of the New England Trail (500ish stamps), another for the Massachusetts/ New Hampshire section (100ish stamps with photos), and one for the CT section of the Appalachian Trail (with photos).

I also have some special event logbooks. My favorite is the We Didn't Start the Fire Event. I printed off the names and meanings and cut them out & pasted them by each of the stamps. It's a fun book to go back and look at (and try to sing).

i have 3 homes. SO 3 different sets of everything. Events get a special logbook. PT's and Sig stamps get one and my carves get one. *sheesh*
Oh and lets not forget postals and ltc's and hitchhikers and hips and......
do what feels good to you. After many many many years and images you get a feel for whats right for you. i know some who use the same size logbook for everything and its all neat on their shelves. i know some that stamp the image 3 times. once on the clue, once in a logbook and once on a 3X5" card.

I usually have 4 books. One for my regular boxing, one for exchanges/personal travelers, one for my own carves, and then every event I go to gets it's own themed book. So for the HP event a couple years ago, I bought a House Ravenclaw journal. For The Art of Video games, I had a Legend of Zelda journal. If I find HH or cooties, they go in whatever log book I was using when I found them.

Do you really get enough stamps to fill up a whole book at one event?

I also dedicate a separate logbook to each event that is medium/large-sized. The traditional stamps, event stamps, and exchanges don't normally fill the book alone, but then I include notes and stories that are memorable, and even include some photos. It becomes a sort of scrapbook/memory book of the event.

Yes, and I've also heard that the scent is more likely to attract critters.
I use paper towels and sometimes water.

Keep them all in one. I do put exchanges in the back. However, in the end it doesnt matter. I only stamp on one side. When the book is full the pages are cut out as well as each stamp. As time marches on they are placed in a binder. I have one with favorites both mine and finds. It also includes sig stamps from old logbooks and exchanges. This helped when organizing events to show businesses, chamber of commerce and others to explain the hobby. The others are in a large plastic box awaiting a boring indoor day to be placed into a binder

almost every carve I make becomes an LTC before it goes out into the world. The LTCs create my record of what I've carved as well as providing another whole level of letterboxing. I keep a large 3-ring binder of just my LTCs. I have also been digitalizing the stamped images or the LTCs. At first, I saved a stamped impression of each in a special book/binder. Still have but don't use. The gist for me is how much time you want to/can spend after an event organizing the impressions. I used to organize impressions by theme, yes theme, in a scrapbook. I stamped on plain cardstock and then cut each image to fit on a page. That was fun and I still enjoy exploring that book but stopped within months as it was too much to manage. I've always been impressed with MoJudy's and Twofreetimers logbooks as they create treasures with photos and more! I have a logbook; they have memory books!

Shameless plug: LTCs, postals, & event boxes are fun ways to expand the experiences or exposure of each stamp you carve and extend your own hobby.

FYI: On the trail, I use spit to clean stamps. ;)

Somebody just made that up. There's not a whit of truth in it. And if the alcohol in baby wipes damages the rubber, it was crummy rubber, probably Speedy-Cut or similar.

I don't use logbooks at all!

I carry around 4x6 unlined index cards on a small clipboard, and I stamp everything on individual cards - stamps, exchanges, HHs, whatever. Then I take the cards home and sort them into 4x6 photo albums with the plastic sleeves. I have an album for regular finds and HHs, a separate album for exchanges, and a third album of images of my own carves that I have planted. I like this system because:

1. I hate when I get a bad image. Using cards, if I don't like how the first image turned out (smudge, didn't press hard enough, etc.), I can just re-stamp on a second card and toss the first.

2. I don't worry about losing my logbook and all the precious images it contains. I leave all my stamped images at home and only take a fresh stack of index cards out on the trails!

I recognize that this way of doing things probably says something questionable about my personality, but it works for me. :)

I actually began by using 4x6 blank index cards for the same reasons, plus they were easy to slide into $1 photo albums from Wal-Mart (also great for the kids). I still use/recommend this method when I teach classes. Especially handy because I can just bring a bunch of cards and then they have to go get their own book/album to hold them.

I since moved to 8x5ish books because I would see other's books and it was so nice when there were large groups of related stamps together. Plus I often felt like I was wasting space on my 4x6 cards and every now and then I would encounter a stamp that didn't fit. But most of those people have nicer handwriting than I do and stamp better the first time than I do.

But I'm actually thinking about going back to the 4x6 way, at least for some things, like series. I recently went back to Hog Heaven Theme Park for the 3rd time and it was really nice to only bring a stack of cards that fit in a fanny pack and then be able to add them right into my existing collection of pigs. Plus you can make a nice 4x6 cover for the theme for each book. My Hog Heaven book cover is a photo of my mom (now deceased) and my daughter (now adult) who went with me the first time. The small books are also handy for when I teach classes and need demos, plus the plastic pages keep it cleaner.

I also keep a separate photo album of 4x6 cards of my own carvings, a separate binder for LTCs and have a separate book for exchanges. It is cool to have ONE book with all my exchanges in it.
