You know those commercials for Fabreze where they say you may have become “nose blind”? I think my boxing buddy and I became Clue Blind today. We couldn’t see ANYthing. 😂 New glossary term? 😂 😂

So, shall we make it this definition: "Not being able to see the landmarks described in the clue"?

Pretty much. Or the spot where the box is either. 😂 But got some and had a great hike.

I was going to add it to the glossary, but I don't see how to do this. Anyone here know how to do it?

I would imagine only admin can do it. It's kind of a joke. I don't really expect it to get added. lol But thanks for the thought. :)

There are other items of similar seriousness/jokes that have been added. Here are some examples: cacheboxing, cattywhompus, dot dot dot road, Douggerware, extreme ironing, flugged, gerbils, dead, gullible, ink in my ears, kittens, dead, lemurs, dead, pixie led, purple heart award, tree snot, wassa baiting, and ya'll.

I vote for "clue blind" being added to the glossary.

I've been clue blind a lot--especially in cemeteries. I rarely find all the names.

Am I the only one who occasionally feels I’m not even in the right PARK? A parallel universe?

It's OK ~ they know who they are.

For those not from the farming class (midwest): cattywumpus is a real word. I learned it at my mother's knee (or maybe at some other joint), lo' these many years ago, and use it to this day as a synonym for crooked, in the mis- or un-aligned sense, not in the politician sense. That is an entirely different hokey expression unfit for publication on this web site.

Growing up in Texas we always said catty corner. "They live 'catty corner' from us".

Growing up in Texas we always said catty corner. "They live 'catty corner' from us".

They are different words with different meanings, though the definitions partially overlap:

catawampus: Chiefly Midland and Southern U.S.
adjective 1) askew; awry. 2) positioned diagonally; cater-cornered.
adverb: diagonally; obliquely

cater-cornered:
adjective: diagonal.
adverb: diagonally.

kitty-corner: Chiefly Northern and Western U.S.
See cater-cornered.

These are the spellings that I found that were closest to the spellings given. As seen in the references, there are regional usages and (presumably) spelling. We use 'kitty corner' here in Utah, but I understand the others.

How about "Cant see the forest for the trees". 8)

Oh there was a dead gerbil way back when.

Hope you're still boxing out there Beth. Great times in CT. We were all such newbies back then. I'm sure I still have the Gerbil event stamp I carved.

But it is SOMETHING that happens to us all once in a while so it is an appr. term for us to use. I've been clue blind many, many times.

I think you are correct. I see the results are favourable...

However, there are times when the clues (landmarks) just are not there to see or have changed greatly... When I started out, I was pointed to the Mapsurfer treasureboxes, and then of course to the McBrae boxes...

One that I started in 2009, took me quite a few years (I think it was 2015) to finally figure out the starting point, find the location generally of the 2nd clue (both were photos) and attempt to find the rough location of the hide... based on the 2nd photo clue... but no way to go there so the rest will have to wait or be ignored... but there isn't any question I got the area correct. And I can also prove that the problem of modern re developement was the prime cause of my aggravation... both photo clues are really different from what they were when the shots were taken... but it just took time and patience... and some skill, but those were meant to be tough... and I am happy with the results even without finds. Still have a few more to solve there though... fun puzzles.

Oberon_Kenobi knows I can get things done, when there is evidence, but sometimes the problem is information overload. I just consider that such a problem simply makes for a more challenging puzzle... but does point to a new responsibility for planters... and / or owners... making sure the clues stay viable... if they get too hard for the level of difficulty intended... on those really dependent on images or landmarks, perhaps an alternate set would be desireable... but not for classics.

should it be expanded for the times you can't see the actual clue? Like the critical word or phrase you miss despite reading the clue three times? Or the extra important last sentence which tells you where the box actually is, instead of the spot where you are sure it should be!

I looked it up. The "correct" version is "cater-corner", but either of the above two are American variants (Americanisms).

However, Descriptive vs. Prescriptive is a continuous debate. I (overall) figure that the purpose of language is to communicate; as long as language accomplishes this goal, I'm (mostly) fine with "non-proper" usages. In fact, I like to and appreciate when others play with language. I consider puns a high form of humor (despite what others may think) because it takes intelligence to create puns and to understand them. (FYI: The actual lowest form of humor is juvenile humor (swearing, sex & potty humor (Don't you like the nested parentheses?)), often employed in today's situation comedies.)

Nevertheless, there are some prescriptive language details that I will fight on, but I can't think of any such examples right now.

Like this video of Sir Braymore?

Same pronunciation, but different spelling.
