GT Cut?
Board: Stamp Carving and Mounting
Oct 14, 2017 7:56pm
This stuff arrived Thursday. The only thing that I can read on it are the numbers (various places on the package), a label with a stock number (STK0159003668) and "Made in China" on it.
What shall we call this? I've temporarily named it after the seller, gentoys.

Well, I could post a photo of the packaging and we could call it by its proper name. That is, as long as someone can read Chinese.

How does it compare to say OZ in terms of stiffness?

It's like a cross between PZ and OZ in my opinion.

Webfoot calls her various materials "____Kut" and it seems like stepping on her toes to call this stuff GT Cut.

This is why I asked for what to call it.
Here is a photo of the top of the front of the packaging. Can someone read this to tell what it is in this language?

No, I'm fine, but thanks for asking! No cuts! No bruises! My feet are a little sore, but that's to be expected after taking over 42,000 steps today.

I call it the "Seattle City Walk." Mostly around the Northgate and Ravenna areas of Seattle.

It's Japanese. I don't know what the first character is, but otherwise it says "shigomu hanko yawaraka taipu" - rubber stamp soft type.

Ah, got it: keshigomu - eraser. So, "keshigomu hanko yawaraka taipu" - "eraser stamp soft type."

Japanese or Chinese, make up your mind! If Japanese, a material only 5mm thick recalls the Daiso stuff that I reviewed before:

That stuff is a 3-color sandwich, but it was also discontinued apparently. Perhaps reintroduced as solid white?

It only has a generic label written in Japanese. Oberon mentioned that it's marked "made in China", and it also ships from China. I would assume most, if not all "Japanese carving material" is made in China ::shrug::

I'm glad that someone could read it. It is strange that it had an adhesive label with "Made in China".
What would be a good short name for it here?

The material we called SLQ was named as ‘shorthand’ for the seller’s name, and she is still selling material, although she’s on Ebay now (and no one seems to be certain if it’s the SAME material as before). I think it would be helpful to also call this material something that identifies the seller, either gentoys or GT block. I have seen several white carving blocks on Ebay from different sellers, that come in the same sizes and look alike, but might not be the same material. It would be helpful to know which seller’s material we’re talking about, for anyone wishing to order that same material.

I posted awhile ago seeking a SLQ source. I did some poking around, and found the original SLQ seller (indeed on eBay), and ordered directly from sweetloveqiner. The shipment came today: definitely SLQ, and interestingly, one of the package labels (usually just plain, clear plastic) reads Junesix, with a row of Chinese characters beneath it.
Anyway, if anyone else is interested in pursuing SLQ, here's a summary of my scouting:
qiner061210@163.com (email for PayPal payment)
(I put the below in the note payment section)
I’d like to place an order then, please:
15 of the LIGHT-COLORED 15x10x.8cm rubber stamp carving slabs. I’d prefer slabs in the LIGHT GREEN shades if possible. (Once I placed the order, I got an email requesting that I select the colors I prefer, labeled by number.)
My calculations show:
15 x $4.50 USD = $67.50 USD
DHL Shipping = $35.00 USD
Total: $102.50 USD
I also ordered one slab of this from eBay hoping it's SLQ - while bigger-sized slabs, that shipping is killer. And, a bulk order doesn't make much of a difference - each block drops to $12.99 shipping

Then, there's this on etsy, good price/shipping (not sure of how bulk orders work - I just bought one) & you get to choose your colors, which is awesome! https://www.etsy.com/listing/545731471/solid-color-rubber-block-diy-rubber?ref=hp_rv

Not wanting to get too far down this rabbit hole, but the material packaging that you posted is/was identical to the packaging I had for a material listed on Amazon as "san note". Mine is/was the same thickness you describe, but was blue on one side and white on the other. They later updated the packaging and then the colour to this brown one here.
$44 USD and free shipping from Japan for 10 slabs in that listing... It was thinner than I would like for letterboxing stamps, so I used it mounted. It's harder than the SEED or Hankeshi-kun material, but slices more like Japanese rubbers than the Chinese or North American ones. I never got around to posting a review for my series, but for those who were at the Box ON in 2016, this was the material that I donated for the raffle... Bon Echo, didn't you or your girls win a slab?

Yes, thank-you for posting that. I looked at the photos and thought it looked a lot like the San Note stuff we received at Box ON 2016, and was going to confirm that when I returned home.
For those who attended Box ON 2017, the "Big Yellow Taxi" stamp from the Music Through the Decades was carved on that material. My 11-year-old daughter carved it (gouge carving). I can't say too much about how it carved but she didn't seem to have any issues with it. I tried a few test cuts, just to make sure it wasn't too firm or too floppy. Took a heat transfer okay. It is thin but IMO firm enough that it does not have to be mounted - the yellow taxi stamp was unmounted seemed to stamp okay (it's about 2" by 2" size).
But as Bumble said, that material is white with thin blue top layer (so thin in fact that I wonder if it actually is a separate layer or just a staining of one surface). Suspicion is that the white-brown and all-white materials are all the same formula, but who knows.
