"Star Trek: Discovery" was tonight. What do you think?

====== Spoilers ahead ======

To me, it seems much darker than any of the other Star Trek series, even Voyager and Enterprise.

The Klingons are much different than any of the other series. At least they acknowledged that the Klingons weren't new, because we'd seen them in Enterprise; Star Fleet just hadn't communicated with them in a very long time. And the Klingons brought up Kahless, who we first heard about in TNG.

The Klingons look a LOT different, but we saw that before the series began. Some of their Terran accent comes through when they're speaking Klingon; they don't speak Klingon as well as in TNG.

It's just too bad that the rest is only (currently) available on CBS: All Access. This will limit the number of viewers, and will probably limit this series to only one season. At least we'll be able to view the single season on one of the other pay video services, eventually.

At least we have "The Orville" to watch on broadcast television.

I'm rather irritated and disappointed that they're going with the "Access" route. To me it just looks greedy. Why put out one episode and then just pull the rug from under your viewers? I will be avoiding Access completely. I do not wish to support that side of it.

I've been dubious and irritated by the CBS access thing, but I decided to watch and tried very hard to like it and be objective. I thought it was pretty and well made, but it seemed like they tried so hard to make it pretty and well made that they forgot to make it entertaining.
I'm far less sad that I won't be watching the paid episodes now.
The Orville entertained me. Yeah, it's dumb in places and awkward and having a bit of a time finding it's legs/identity, but it's entertaining all around.

Have to amend this a bit as I just worked out that I missed the very beginning due to rotten time zone math. ;) Which explains why I was thinking, boy, they really opened this up abruptly.

So, it sounds like you're ready for "The Orville: The Next Generation". ;-)

The fact that Discovery even got made is amazing because several years ago, I read that Les Mooves, president of CBS, had no intention of ever allowing another Star Trek series to be created. Clearly the CBS All Access route was the compromise. And because it was going to be airing on a paid service, CBS was even willing to give it a bigger budget per episode than they would have if it had been on free TV. This allows for a better production value, giving the show much more of a cinematic look than past Star Trek series.

After watching the first two episodes (I have been an All Access subscriber for several years, so the announcement that Discovery was going to be streaming only didn't bother me at all), I do think CBS would have been smarter to air both of those episodes as the second one was really a lot better than the first. I'm excited to see where the show is going, and also to finally get to see the Discovery itself in episode 3.

So, you don't like CBS All Access, but you're using it to watch the third (and other?) episodes?

I remember reading somewhere that Netflix bought the rights to air the show everywhere.... Except the US, of course. But if you can VPN into anywhere outside of the US or happen to be traveling out of the country, you're golden!
