Disinfected by the USPS

So I received three postal letterbox packages today. All three came enclosed in individual clear sealed bags with a letter from the USPS and a sticker saying it had been disinfected by the USPS safety and hazmat operations. Two of the three seemed okay but one was spotted with some sticky red goo. I don't know what it was but I opened up the package with medical gloves on and promptly tossed it. My postmaster, who has been with the post office for a few decades, said she has never seen a package come through labeled like that. I posted pictures here: https://www.atlasquest.com/gallery/viewalbum.html?gAlbumId=4600

Anyone else encounter something like this?

I'd have tossed it too. Yuck.

Interesting situation... just a wild guess is that they detected a low level of some mould or mildew...
I've noticed that in some Geocache boxes... and my one true LB find... not heavy or deteriorated mind you... just that musty smell from old books and such... sometimes just the paper doing its normal degrading... sometimes a bit of mildew... I would guess that something like that might trigger a response from sensors set up to detect other things... like explosives or bio threats... IF they suspected you of receiving something along those lines, I bet it would not have been a friendly note of information.

I see you asked your Postmaster... did you ask them to inquire of the Denver CO Postmaster mentioned on the bag note... I'm sure they would have no problem handing it down to their Hazmat deptartment also mentioned... and that they would answer you as to what and why... IF they get the idea you were sent by the big boss locally.

Good luck.
