OK so I planted a new box in Grand Lake CO today
I clicked on the nearby boxes icon when I checked the final listing
It found all the local boxes I knew about plus mine
But it also found one in Estes Park CO on Rt 7
This is not near Grand Lake
Estes Park is the Eatern entrance to RNMP
Grand Lake is the Western entrance
Any idea how this box turned up in this search?
There are of course lots of boxes in Estes Park and they did not show up in this search
This one commemorates the 100th anniversary of RMNP
Which is great but it's still no where near Grand Lake, even tho RMNP is๐

Because the west side of RMNP is less than 15 miles away from the east side of RMNP. =) Keep in mind--distances are "as the crow flies" and not "as the duck walks."
Depends on how the box is listed.... When I ran a search for "Grand Lake," the Happy 100th box was listed as 14.9 miles away... it barely squeaked in under the 15-mile limit. But it's very precisely located, and is located about 9 miles south of Estes Park. Estes Park itself might be over the 15-mile limit and so any box listed there wouldn't show up in a default search for Grand Lake. And, in fact, when I increase the search radius to 20, another 12 boxes in Estes Park show up. Increase the limit to 25 miles and another 10 boxes in Estes Park show up.
In any case.... all is well. The box is listed accurately and is supposed to be showing up in a 15-mile search. Just barely.... and with absolutely zero consideration of the giant mountain range between the two locations. =)

This was very interesting and educational to me. I have several boxes planted within a 15 square mile radius and all of them will show up at the top of the nearby box search for one another EXCEPT one will show up as being 11 miles away when it is actually closer to some that are listed as being fewer miles away. I always figured it was because that particular box was closer to Pikes Peak and the mountain was ruining the range but now I'm concerned AQ is like most people and not sure where Cascade, Colorado really is.

I wish I could get my daughter interested in letterboxing. She lives in Fraser, which I think isn't far from Grand Lake. She has a lot of pictures from there. She loves to take pictures & I told her this would be a good way to find new places to photograph.

AQ currently has two different Cascade, Colorados in the database. Unless you specify a county, it might be using either one of them. El Paso County or La Plata County. Looking at a map, I'm not sure about that second one. I don't see any civilization there. Maybe it somehow mapped to a waterfall!? (Cascade = waterfall)
So depending on the listing, it might show up in either of those places at the moment.

It's definitely listed as being in the correct Cascade, which is in El Paso County. Even on the map when looking at the box, it pinpoints it in the general location of the correct Cascade, it just shows up as being further from other boxes that are actually closer to it.
I'm not familiar with this Cascade but I looked at a map and saw it was in the San Juan National Forest near Crazy Women Gulch and it is now on my list of places to explore. Maybe I'll plant a box there...
