Must do/see things and places
Board: State: Michigan

Hi Michigan!
We are visiting family and have some days to "field trip". We are staying near Detroit and already been to the Ford Museum, rouge factory tour (and have village on our list to do), and Ann Arbor hands on museum. What else should be on our must do list? we are willing to drive a few hours, but probably not as far as the UP.
Thanks!

Welcome to Michigan! And thanks for dropping off something in Toledo on your way up.
The Detroit Institute of Arts is definitely worth a visit, and so is the Michigan Historical Museum in Lansing. You might want to get over to the southwest side of the state. There's lots to do in Grand Rapids, including the Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park. The beaches in that part of the state are really nice, so you might think about towns like Grand Haven, Saugatuck, South Haven, or my personal favorite, St. Joseph.
If you have time you could head to the northwest part of the Lower Peninsula and check out Sleeping Bear Dunes, Traverse City, the Old Mission Peninsula, and the Leelanau Pensinsula. Good hiking, scenery, restaurants, shopping, and wineries--not necessarily in that order. Have fun!

Mackinac island (4.5 hours away though)
I agree with Dawnkey about Sleeping Bear, Traverse City, and Grand Rapids
Locally, the Detroit Zoo, Eastern Market, DIA, Hitsville USA, maybe something is playing at the Fox Theater....
Have fun whatever you decide to do!

I took a walking tour of all the graffiti art at Eastern Market back in the fall. That was cool!

And, if you have time, and the inclination, we have a strong group of boxers here in SE MI who are always willing to get together at the drop of a hat and have a mini-meet.

There's also the following:
Tour the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House in Grosse Pointe Shores. The buildings and grounds are beautiful.
In Bloomfield Hills, there's the Cranbrook House and Gardens, the Cranbrook Art Museum and the Cranbrook Institute of Science, including the Planetarium. My favorite is the Institute of Science.
From July 20-23 is the Ann Arbor Street Art Fair. It's actually 4 fairs, one event. It's big.
July 21 and 22 is the Summer Beer Festival in Ypsilanti, but good luck getting tickets! I usually have to settle for the beer fest in Houghton in August.

Not sure how my days are looking for the tomorrow and Saturday. Do you know if you will be here on Sunday? I live in Flint and work in Lansing, but willing to drive to see letterboxers.

Just give us some times you are free and we will pick one of those to meet up. Novi is about a 45 minute drive for me. Not too bad. Maybe Spartanfans could suggest a place to meet as they are in the area. Or if you will be boxing somewhere, we could meet there. Doesn't matter, just let us know.

Those options sound good. I would be able to make it there around 6ish if it was on Monday and free on Sunday.

Actually, if no one has any objections, when I get home tonight or tomorrow morning, I will create a mini-meet for Monday night. Heather or Mike - where should we meet??

We are moving south a bit... staying south of Ann Arbor (near that airport) and plan to see Detroit. (Belle isle, science center, people mover). So anyplace In that general area will work!

How about Canton or Taylor or Belleville? Or we could meet in Southgate at my church and order pizza in.
