Really?

We were disappointed that the Louvre had been taken, however, and all we found was a plastic bag of dog doo

Just received the above find notice and while yes we might be a hair more bummed than the average Joe being as it was "our" box that went missing, boohoo, whatever, these things happen.
But the rest of the message just blows me away. Really? That's disgusting. Honest to goodness what is wrong with some people?

Please someone tell me this has happened to you too so we won't feel quite so special...

Grrr,

I found a letterbox full of pee once. I'm sure the owner felt much worse than I did. I was so upset that I basically got peed on, that all this time I never thought about how awful they must have felt being the box owner until I just read these posts. But I sure as heck didn't list that in the comments to the box.

You are not alone. I remember someone retired a box because of that.

Earlier this year, I found a letterbox filled or covered with probable vomit, but possible excrement. Beer perfumed the air, hence why it was probably the first. My next stop was to a CVS to visit to their bathroom and invest in a new bottle of hand sanitizer.

That is all I can muster up to say.
And I'm sorry.

Well, now, to be fair, sometimes when you gotta go, you gotta go. And perhaps nobody told you there was a letterbox hidden behind that tree.

I have seen those blue bags of poop while hiking/walking. I think people leave them with the intention of picking them up on their way back so they don't have to carry them as they hike. (not excusing the behavior by any means). Last week, I was following some clues and one of the trees that was part of the clue ("look for tree with such and such feature, then turn right") had a blue bag in it. For half a sec, I forgot that I was still on my way to the box, and thought that I had found an uncovered, blue bagged letterbox! Glad I did not open it!
I couldn't tell from the note if the bag was just at the site, or in the box, but I hope it was not in the box!

I found a geocache once where the contents had been replaced with dog poo. I posted a log to that effect and also sent a message to the cache owner. Bad things don't just happen to letterboxes.

You may be reading more in the message than is there. You may be thinking someone replaced your box with a plastic bag of doo-doo. But maybe there was a forgotten bag of doo-doo in the area (sometimes dog walkers pick up their dog's refuse, then leave the bag by the side of the trail, meaning to pick it up on the way back, then forget); it's not commendable, but may have absolutely nothing to do with your box being missing. Personally, I'd rather see the bag of doo-doo than the piles that are ignored by people, even when there are bag stations for the purpose nearby.

For me, it depends. In a maintained park, yes--some park worker will pick up the "forgotten" bag. Several miles out into the woods on a hike? I'd rather see the poo--at least it will be broken down quickly. Those bags last forever.

Actually, some of them are biodegradable. Plastics can be made of non-petroleum sources and most of those are biodegradable. Look up polylactic acid. I couldn't find out quickly how soon it will break down.

I can top that...we found a box once with poop inside the box, on top of the logbook and stamp. And while checking on one of our boxes, we found it full of pee. What a treat:-(

Doesn't make it excusable. Dog doo is natural fertilizer, while plastic bags are litter.

True. On one of my geocaching trips, on my way out, I saw such a blue bag of dog poo that someone had left by the side of the trail. I picked it up to throw it away. Since there was no trash can at this particular trailhead, I had to take it all of the way home in my car, in the trunk. I tossed it as soon as I got home.

If they're not going to take it (the dog poo) along with them they should at least get it off of the trail.

a plastic bag of dog doo

At least it was still in the plastic bag. I found an unpublished geocache once near one of our letterbox hybrids. Left it and checked on it a couple of months later to see if it was still there. It was. But this time someone pooped in it - a big dump. Then they lifted the container and placed it in the chest high nook (unless the somehow managed to squat up in that tree =| ). Weird compulsion.

I agree. There's a trail at the back of my house that gets quite a bit of poo during the winter (not too bad during the warmer weather). But once a winter we usually get a thaw. I'll go out with my shovel and toss what I see off the trail. In late April (the worst time for winter left overs on the trail), I carry a cedar shingle to toss the stuff into the forest. I love dogs and don't want to see them get into trouble and have fewer areas to exercise and enjoy nature.
