Travelling letterboxes NOT Postals

I stumbled across some letterboxes by XMarks the Spot. That travel around but don't seem to be Postals. How do we get in on these type of things?

The best way (and the way that I got to see two of them) is to make friends and to let your friends know that you like puzzles and mysteries. Then, if they get their hands on one -- or find out one is travelling in your area -- you'll be the first one to know! :)

Networking and luck. :)

Networking - Attending events, doing postals/LTC's/group type activities where you get to "know" people through frequent connections will help learn more and more about where these might be in the country and people who may have access to them.

Luck - You may know where one is, but then it is timing to see if you can access it before it moves on. These are amazing boxes - ALWAYS - and many, many people are interested in seeing them - gotta be a little lucky to be in the right place at the right time...but it is doable :)

Enjoy the process to get closer to them. And remember, he does have traditional (stationary) ones in the world too...

Jeff *who needs to get to the stationary ones* :)

I think that the more I've networked, the more I've really, really enjoyed that aspect of the hobby. There's just so many fun things to learn from other people.

I think every one of the traveling boxes I've gotten was due to someone remembering something I did in the past for them so I was the one they opted to hand it to. And that's pretty sweet to earn one that way. :)

Postals aren't the only things that travel. So do traveling event boxes. And these travel quite a bit, sometimes with the creators and sometimes not. It's usually a matter of being in the right place at the right time, luck of the draw, serendipity.

Well, then it is clear that I'll never get one. Luck isn't my forte. LOL

So I've acquired quite a number of X boxes (likely many more than Miss Moon) and I say it has more to do with networking and the connections you make with others, but you choose to believe it's luck?

But then, I've never been one to rely on luck. I make my own fortune. ;)

Have you tried to find the one right there in your own state? From what I've heard that one right there is more amazing than most of the traveling ones!

Don't just wait for things to come to you -- go find them! It's what makes this hobby fun! :)

It is all about the network of fellow boxer friends that will open the door to these traveling boxes. We have seen traveling clues as well. Just passed a clue on for a box planted in 2006. The clues are not online. Many have signed the clue "log". It will be interesting to see how many have searched for the box.

Wow, Jones Crew - if i were you, i would go for that box!! given the names associated with it, it's going to be PHENOMENAL!!

And that's the first thing you do - you pay attention to what other letterboxers say. you keep your ears and eyes open. you remember things. you read and read and read. you keep up etiquette; you seal baggies, you close boxes, you rehide well. you donate stamps and learn graciousness. you go to events and learn from others. you carve and plant and carve some more. you take out the garbage and help clean up at events. you look for and find a lot of boxes. you bide your time and study clues.

you earn your stripes.

not because other people don't want to share, but because that's what it takes. just like any other group. it takes time to become part of a group, a culture. And when you share yourself, others share with you. It's that simple.

I don't consider myself unlucky; I'm just saving it up for something big like the lottery. ;-)

It is already on my list to go there. And we will be going to a couple when we go back east as well. I'm just looking to get in on another aspect of this fun hobby.

Thanks Tiggs,
Probably the answer I was looking for was "hang in there. You'll get a chance."
I've been in this hobby since July. I have carved a BILLION stamps and donated them to other people. I work hard and teach my children to make each box better than when we found it.
Events are fairly few here, and with 8 children I don't have a lot of time to go far, yet. I'm attending my first one tomorrow-- so stinking excited!!!
Anyway, I'll try to be patient.

Hurray! On both counts.

You'll really enjoy your first event. I've gone to a few around here. The bigger they are the earlier you should get there. I found that out at an event this past summer.

You probably do have more than me. I've never sought them out. I've only encountered the ones that were at events I attended.

I've never had the desire to network to get any of them. It's just always been a nice surprise at gatherings and I've never looked for any traditional ones.

That's worked just fine for me so far.

Well, then, for you, it is simply about luck.

But I think you do have some of the traditional ones. If you did the Woodland Folks series he has abut 3 of them in there.

Yes. It is.

Yes. I have that series.

I was for the most part referring to the ones that appear at events since those seemed to be the ones that were originally referred to before the discussion mentioned traditional plants.
