I, for one, not being an In-N-Out cuckoo (the lines are ALWAYS so long! is it really THAT good?), think it *totally* counts that you have met both Ben and Jerry. And it's not about being sheltered, it's about the joys of travel, discovering what's wonderful about other places. So enjoy your introduction to California's favorite burgers.

and p.s. thanks for the help on a certain watery box recently (Friday). Yes, I was of the party.

By next Christmas, do you mean 2012 or 2013? Either way, let me know what your plans are so we can try to get together. And I can try to get some new stuff planted before you arrive. (maybe...now that I've been so inspired!)

I have yet to meet the SoCal boxers myself, but I can tell they're a lively bunch.

Oh, Tiggers are wonderful critters, Tiggers are wonderful things, their bottoms are made out of rubber, their tails are made out of springs! They're bouncy trouncy bouncy bouncy, fun fun fun fun fun!!! But the most wonderful thing about Tiggers is [you're] the only one, oh [you're] the only one!! la la la

By next Christmas, do you mean 2012 or 2013?

it depends on two things: when the house sells and what the job situation is looking like. It may also depend on whether or not the other child is getting married in England at some point in 2013. Then, we have to go there.
However, it is technically our year to go there. . .

stay tuned for further developments.

I was thinking In-N-Out because it is a unique So Cal experience. Just as I would want to visit Ben and Jerry's if I went to Vermont.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In-N-Out_Burger

I have actually sat in the drive-thru line at an In-N-Out and watched through the windows as a guy washed potatoes, a second guy peeled them, another put them through a slicer and dropped them in a fryer, and another pulled them out of the fryer, put them in a box and handed them to me. C'mon, that's awesome!!

The thing is, they would not be at all accommodating to a large group wanting table space. We need one right next to a park where we can go to eat our food, talk too much and have a stamping frenzy. Will you be staying in Long Beach, Anaheim, or somewheres in betwixt?

I think I have watched my son devour one to many "Animal Style 4x4's" followed closely by a large order of "Animal Style" fries to truly appreciate In-N-Out anymore :-P

However, would love to meet up with all of you for exchanges . . . and maybe some of there fries sans "animal" sauce :-D

We will be staying in Anaheim - directly across from California Adventure. We have a car, an atlas of the area and we're not afraid to use it!

That sounds like a plan! Freshly made fries is a good thing to me! And burgers are high on the list of Mr Umbrella's favorite foods.

I won't be able to join y'all but I'm surprised that no one has suggested meeting where you would find "El Rey." Food was excellent and a box, too. Tiggermama, even if you do go to In-N-Out (so yummy!), take time to find El Rey.

Comparing El Rey and In N Out all in the same sentence is just not feasible.... El Rey is in a category all its own!!!!! Not saying anything wrong with In N Out... but the drive through does not compare to the experience of El Rey!!!!!

Actually it's not. They have In N Out in Northern California and in Reno.

mm. . . Mexican food. that would work too. Did i mention i grew up in San Diego and there's no decent Mexican anywhere on the East coast???

then again, Mr Umbrella is a transplanted Nebraska dairy farmer. Maybe we should stick with burgers. . .

Funny Tigs, we LOVE mexican food too (do not ask me how because we are 100 % Irish) but ever since we moved from the west coast we feel the same way you do....no decent Mexican food here on the East coast...just not the same and we miss it soooo much! ( I could eat Mexican food 24/7...if only the family would let me!!!) MMM...now you have me craving it!!!...back to work!

There are also a few in AZ but still it started out as a California experience. Oh and they are building in TX now too. They skipped NM. -_-

You should bounce through NM. It's different here than it is in NM but still really good. Whenever we go out to visit the family my hubby HAS to have a fix of 'California Mexican' food. ^_^

Sure, in the last ten years they've expanded, but Salt Lake City and Dallas are still a long way from Vermont.

I've been dieting pretty strictly for a while now... but let me know. Is an In N Out Burger good enough to warrant a cheat meal? ;) How about the fries, etc? Worth it, or standard fast food stuff?

I think In-N-Out is good enough to cheat a bit. They're fries are better than most fast food place fries too but I can take or leave them.

I do not know about most I&O's, but here in the Eastbay, the one on Fitzgerald is pretty heavy handed with the salt. If you eat minimal or no salt, you will definitely want to request them to omit the salt on the fries. What salt they put on the burgers actually is needed for the taste aspect.

I don't know what diet you are following, but I know that I had co-workers on the atkins diet In N Out would give their burgers wrapped in lettuce instead of a bun. So there options there...

Hi Brandy... My compromise with diet & In-N-Out is to order a hamburger "protein style" -- which means it's wrapped in iceburg lettuce, instead of a bun. No cheese, yes to grilled onions (you must ask for them to be grilled, or else you'll get them raw) -- slightly messy, but delicious!

Worth a try, right?
