Putting NC boxes up for adoption

It is my belief that most boxes go up for adoption when someone is getting out of letterboxing or no longer around to do maintenance on their boxes?

Is there such a thing as temporary adoption or transfer of ownership? How does that work and what do you all suggest in my case? I have quite a few boxes planted in NC and for obvious reasons (living in another country) I can't do my seasonal maintenance like I used to.

I used to make it out to Lake Michael every spring when they opened to check on all of the boxes planted for the Purple People Eater event long ago. This year, I wasn't able to but had a letterboxing friend (Trepid Explorer) check on them and replace baggies.

I went out to Northeast Park quite frequently to check on several of my series and I was also "in charge" of maintaining Safari Man's series out there. Those and many more, I can no longer maintain while I am away from NC.

I will be in the US for about a month this summer, but several of those weeks I will be traveling to other states and won't be able to check on boxes.

Suggestions are welcome...
Thanks,
Turtlelove

There's no adoption system, HOWEVER, you can transfer ownership of your boxes to someone else if that is what you and the other person agree to. You keep yourself as the planter. Then you BOTH have access to the clue to make any necessary updates. When you return, you can transfer ownership back to yourself if you like.

Personally, I don't worry too much about getting my boxes adopted out that I can't visit. No matter where I am, I can get find reports on them and update info. with the find reports. And sometimes I can get a local to go out and assist with something.

And I feel like I've "unofficially" adopted boxes in my area anyway by doing full park maintenance on many of the parks here. I'd like to think that there are other people out there doing the same for me. :)

More likely to happen is all the boxes in Denmark and the other countries will be abandon after you leave in a couple of years. Personally, I'd leave them since they don't really work anywhere else. But that will be a decision you'll have to make in a couple of years...

Well, maybe you could arrange "foster care" for your boxes till you get back ;-)

Yes...I do plan to leave the boxes planted in Denmark and other counties as they are being carved for (themes to match) the countries they are planted in.

Thanks for the advice :o)

Stormrider...LOL!

Been looking for an address from a letterboxer in Ohio but they haven't checked into AQ today...getting late here and I need to get up early in the morning. Corey, my 14 year old (red fire when he letterboxed) has surgery scheduled in the morning. Prayers are welcome and appreciated.

Goodnight,
Turtlelove

Thanks...we are home and he is resting on the sofa. He did great, a real trooper...I was the big baby. I went into the operating room with him until it was time for surgery. I held his hand, the minute the anesthesia was administered and he began to close his eyes, I lost it. It was such an unsettling moment. He wasn't aware that I cried and remembers 2 things before he fell asleep...1) me telling him that I love him and 2) the nurse rubbing his cheek and talking to him about the big pizza he wanted to eat after surgery!! Gotta love those growing teenagers! :o)

When are you going to be in NC in June?

The boys and I fly in on June 16th and leave again on July 26th. It seems like a nice long vacation, but we will be burning up the roads visiting here and there. I'm looking forward to catching up with many...but the weather will be something I have to get used to again.

The past few weeks have been sunny and in the high 60's, beautiful for outdoor work and play. Yesterday things changed. It is misty/and on again off again light rains. I am wearing a sweater and jeans again. A little chilly. A woman at the hospital that we were talking with says Denmark has 2 seasons: "the white winter" and the "green winter". I guess it is the green winter that has rolled in...

I think when these things happen that will always feel like the case. Making the medical decisions for a life you value more than your own is extraordinarily stressful.

Any chance you'll be in the Charlotte area on 6/23?

We went out recently to Northeast Park and really enjoyed the boxes out there! I sent Safari Man some notes- some of his boxes did need repair and I replaced baggies until I ran out- so most of them have new baggies now.

Not sure the next time I'll get out that way, but we did only get about half of what was out there...so another trip is in order. I usually do bring extra baggies with me, so I will be sure that if we get out there before someone else does that I'll replace baggies as needed and let you know!

No promises on how soon though... Pugs is about to be out of state for the summer and I (Bee) will have to match schedules with a friend- but luckily I have a couple letterboxing friends!

I have plans with friends that weekend, but would like to see some letterboxing friends in the Western part of the state sometime towards the end of June....

I know you mentioned a trip...when will you be around this summer?

Yes...I got the notes as well as I am his contact person for those boxes. I appreciate you looking after them. I checked them all before I left for Denmark, but it seems they needed some help after the winter months. Thank you for doing maintenance.

I have an old college friend that lives in Gibsonville and he is wanting to meet up while I am in NC. Maybe a coffee and a trail or two at Northeast will be perfect. We can visit, hike, and I can do some checking on boxes :o)

In any event, if you make it there before or after I do, thatnks agin for your help.
Turtlelove :o)

Yep. Due to the rates, we ended up rescheduling plans for our anniversary trip to Hawaii to Sept. instead of June. After waiting 20yrs, we decided a few more months wouldn't matter to get a lower rate (okay, I decided that -- Papa Wolf wasn't too happy about waiting).

And I'm getting ready to list a small event on 6/23 in the Charlotte area -- I was kind of hoping that would work out for you. Perhaps it still could-- bring those friends! :)

I could sweeten the deal for them -- come into town early and have breakfast at Amelie's! There's even some ties to The Hunger Games if you need to convince the kids. LOL! If that's not enough, the actual meet will be dinner at Brixx pizza (tentatively planned at this point).
I plan on some downtown INDOOR boxing so if the heat is too much now coming from Denmark, there will be that option to get a few that way.

I certainly do appreciate the assistance with box mainenance, Bee and its finders like you that help keep those far away boxes available to future finders, for many planters. A Big Thank you from all of us !!!

I also Thank TurtleLove for all the assistance she has given me on this series in particular!
