And what about Uncle Milton Beryl...HE was Burl too. NOT BARREL

Hold on there you letterboxers if you know a wetherman...tell him!! Granny getting down off her soapbox now.

GB... I have a thing about names too....my middle son was named after his Grandfather who had been a Preacher for many years and had passed on 12 years before my son was born. His name is Bernard..."Burn erd" Not Ber NARD. Nothing gets me going as someone mispronouncing his name (after telling the person the correct pronunciation). However, now that he is married...his wife calles him Bernie...lol...and it drives me nuts..she knows it does and trys not to call him that in front of me (thank goodness). I tried to name my children names that couldn't or wouldn't be shorten..Bryan, Bernard and Andrew...they are now "E", Bernie and Andy !! lol Go figure...all changed or shorten by the women in their lives! lol

My dear Dad was also named Bernard and it was pronounced just like your son's name. But most folks called him "Bernie."

We don't have any strange pronunciations in our family, but I did go to college with a woman whose name was spelled Rene, which you would expect to be "Re-NAY," but she pronounces it "Reeny." -Rose (Pronounced just like it's spelled).

I tried to name my children names that couldn't or wouldn't be shortened

My ex's name was Marc and his mother also wanted a name that couldn't be shortened. (He was German hence the spelling.) She would get so mad when his friends called him Marcie (hard c sound - like Markie). I actually hated that nick-name too, but did it sometimes just to get to her :)
And as a side note...having a name that shouldn't be shortened (Stacey), I hate being called Stace!!!! (fortunately my real friends don't really call me that very often.)

In England, it's spelled "Beryl". And I'm pretty sure there's a semi-precious stone w/the same name. SS

Well my name has absolutely no nickname variations. However....I have had people who have called me Heath...It's fine, it doesn't bother me. I have a friend who hates any and all shortenings of her name and also of her daughters name...so I don't shorten them. hehe

Heather is my name by the by.

Female here.
Female name, but drop the E from the end and you get a male name.
My work e-mail spells out my name.
My e-mail signature spells out my name.
Apparently many keyboards have a limited use "E" key.
Even people who know me drop the E when e-mailing.

Well, the confusion probably comes from the fact the beryl is a semiprecious gem that is pronounced like "barrel." Even dictionary.com pronounces it that way. I have had several acquaintances named Beryl and they pronounced it "barrel." So when it's your name, you can pronounce it any way you want, but don't be surprised when people mess it up, I suppose.

YG (aka Shirley, a name that can only been butchered when shortened, named after my grandmother, who dated a Bernard, pronounced your proper way.). :)

I just can't say Bernard. It comes out sounding like "Brrrr-nerd" (I feel like I'm making fun of a shivering geek). But I would pronounce Beryl, like Pearl... but I probably say that wrong too. One of my daughter's middle name's is Murel like Pearl. As far as Madelynn I say that like "Ma-dell-in" but when I sing farmer in the dell it sounds like an A.

My middle name is a bit like that. Fortunately no one ever really has to write it so I don't know if they would spell it wrong....Probably. My grandparents have. It's Jeanne, not Jean. And for some people it is impossible to pronounce. That extra ne is confusing I guess. When I was a kid I had a teacher read it was Genie......a friend thought it was pronounced G-anne. Go figure. It's not that difficult really.

It's Jeanne, not Jean

my family has Jeanie everywhere you look. Grandmother, cousin, mother, sister, and one of my cats. They're all Jeanie not Jean.

Interesting. Yeah Jeanne is also my maternal grandma's middle name. I have two other cousins with Jean for their middle names. Guess how everyone on my dad's side thinks my middle name is spelled?

I usually don't get too fussed about people mispronouncing my name, I tend to remember unusual spellings and pronunciations, though.

-Mitzi (not Misty, Missy, Mindy, Mitzie, Mitzy, or Nancy)
Like the beautiful actress Mitzi Gaynor, not like your Grandma's poodle, Mitzi, who was just the cutest little thing.

Why is everybody hugging me?? Is it because you all feel sorry for a girl that was named after her 60-year old grandmother and who never met another Shirley under the age of 65 all the while she was growing up? And nicknames??? Fuuuhhh-getaboutit!!! Curly, squirrelly, girly...and on and on. Maybe mispronunciation would have been better..... AND I learned at an early age that Shirley was an English boy's name! So unfair......

Move to New Orleans. You name will never be mispronounced or misspelled ever again. I have two friends here name Jeanne, pronounced very close to John, but with a softer J.

Well my maiden name is Pitts. My first name starts with an H. You can guess what kind of 'nicknames' I received. hehe Shirley is my grandmother's name. ^_^ Her middle name is Van. It's a family name. Shirley Van Biles. I would have felt sorry for my great grandfather though. Miles Van Biles.

Oh that would be so nice. Hehe Growing up my aunt used to pronounce it funky and say it was the french way. I learned differently when I actually took French. hehe An interesting fact. When I took a German class I was informed that there is no translation for any of my names. hehe Although when I visited my uncle in Germany I was informed people would be calling me 'Heazer'.

hmm...Kitty could be a nick name for my daughter. We call her Kit. One of my nephews does sometimes call her Kitty. It's ok.....

And hugs...I probably wouldn't like that either. One of my uncles wanted my mom to name me Peach....and as I've said in another post my maiden name is Pitts.....I would have hated life if my mom did that to me.

My actual first name is cindyellen - which I don't mind. Long and complicated, yes, but people shorten it to Cindy. That's cool. However, then people get a little too familiar and shorten it to Cin. Uh, no thank you. Especially since - well, I'm an ordained clergy woman. Yeah, that doesn't fly.

~tigs(which really works better as a name all 'round, doncha think?)

Interesting. I've never heard that name before. we gave our daughter a unique name and it does allow for several nicknames. I'm fine with nicknames. We call her Kit...most everyone calls her Kit but she could go by something else when she gets older if she wants to. I generally try to ask people if they mind before I shorten their name. The funniest thing is when people call the hubs Jonathan....Uhh his name is John and it's not short for Jonathan. It's just John.

Apologizing to all for shortening names--my family is notorious for nicknames. I forget not everybody wants one. Stacey, I particularly apologize to you, because it is likely I may have called you "Stace" if I was feeling chummy.

Two out of three of our children have names that are frequently shortened. Every one has a nickname of some sorts. My son is a Daniel, never a Dan and certainly not a Danny. My Allison is Allie to family, but started going by Kay when she started high school. I call her Allie Kay. Her father calls her by her nickname, Doodle

I have three Madelines at school--pronounced Mad-a-line, Mad-lynn and Mad-a-lynn. The history of names is fascinating for sure.

I haven't met a lot of people that were real sticklers for no nicknames but I try to be considerate when I do. I have a friend who is a Rebecca. You had better not call her Becky or Becca. hehe Her daughters name is Samantha. There is no nickname for that that she finds acceptable either. She may just have to deal with it if her daughter grows up and decides she likes Sam though. hehe

Yes, but his was spelled "Berle".

I'm sorry, but one just can't argue with The Church... "Beryl" is pronounced "Barrel", as is proven by the following historically accurate interview:
