Quote I read in your clues that those trig things are small concrete markers, that one in the picture looks like a building.

lol. They are about waist height. It is amazing because you find them on all the highest land in the area and in the most remote and inaccessible spots as well as just sat in fields.

I never worry about getting in touch with my feminine side when I go to Hobby Lobby...if someone wants to make something of it, they usually change their mind when they see the Colt .45 (stainless, Combat Commander, cocked and locked, with my badge on my belt right next to it) on my hip.

I just had a vision of you standing in the scrapbooking isle trying to decide which paper to get for a log book. :)

As a former land surveyor I can tell you a lot about trig. points. But (thankfully you might say) I will try to summarise in a few sentences. They are the corners of a series of hundreds of triangles which cover the whole of the country, hence the name triangulation points. Surveyors measured the angles between points to a very high degree of accuracy (fractions of a second of arc) and also the length of a couple of sides at opposite ends of the country. Then by using good old-fashioned trigonometry they calculated the position of each pillar. The pillars were then used as the basis for mapping the surrounding areas.

To get good, long-range lines of sight trig. points are located on hill tops and in open country. On the top is three-legged mounting plate, known as a spider plate, that a surveyor can mount a theodilite on. On one side of the pillar is a benchmark plate for vertical control.

Of course the introduction of satellite positioning, electronic surveying instruments and aerial photography has largely rendered the old techniques obsolete, but the pillars remain as very useful to hikers, letterboxers etc.

we ate sandwiches made of limberger cheese and red onions on rye bread. Yummmmmm! Of course, unless you were eating them, you didn't want to be anywhere near the gathering!! My Dad made cow tongue on a regular basis. I thought it was normal.

I bought some Limberger.....once. To me it tastes just like it smells....can't eat it. Tongue on the other hand....as we say in the south...thems good eatin'

I'm glad you enjoy them. The reason we do one a day is to satisfy our two boys, Encyclopedia Boy and Lightning Bolt. They would do them all day, but we limit them to one each day. They will continue for a while, until we run out of Beanies and Rangers (may take forever!)

Hello fellow New Yorkers, I don't know if anyone can help on such short notice, but I am asking anyway. Our family is going camping this weekend to Stony Brook State Park near Dansville, NY. Does anyone know of any letterboxes in the area? I did a search for Dansville and for Stony Brook State Park, but no luck. I am sure we will have a great time either way, but I'd hate to miss any boxes in the park.

Thanks,
Padfoot Treehuggers :)

If anyone knows of any, could you please post them to the board, I love Stoney Brook and we usually ride the bike down there a couple of times each summer. Thanks! :^)

How cool to finally see some traffic on the Montana board! :)

My parents also live in Montana, about an hour south of Missoula. Missoula has a fair number of boxes, if you can get out that way. Sadly, I will miss you, I'm not heading out that way until the end of July. There's a gathering in Idaho in July, which should be fun.

Some new ones have been planted recently in Ravalli County by Wind Wolf, but I'm not sure about the Bozeman area. If you ge to Hamilton, I recommend the Blodgett Canyon Overlook Trail boxes (a nice hike as well as nice boxes), and Chocolate Moose, which is just cute. :)

Have fun!

Are you looking for unattached letterboxing ladies?

I could use a list for a friend!

As for my trail name you might have to look at my profile to tell. But after that there is no doubt I'm all Female and love it. I also jump off cliffs, camp where there are no restrooms and will backpack until I drop. I have no fear of getting dirty!

Quote Actually, someone did do a survey at one time for a college project! I kid you not!

She's not kidding. It was a Master's Thesis for a university in Ohio. I thought about this some time ago, searched for it, and found the abstract, but never got past that.

I think the consensus was that there are more female 'boxers than male 'boxers, but she admitted that the results may have been affected by the lack of response from the men she contacted about the poll.

Quote Bonus points if you put it on a stick

So does having it on a stick make you feel less of a savage or more of one?

Funny you mention this... it wasn't the first food-on-a-stick, but certainly the most colorful: shish kebabs were invented by the nomadic warriors who lived in the middle east. Thing was, they didn't use STICKS... they used their swords.

As it was not uncommon for them to be right in the middle of eating a meal when they were called off to battle, they didn't even have to leave their food behind.

Just imagine facing off against a bunch of these guys sitting on their horses and licking their swords...

Aside: the human body is not meant to live without meat, especially in the years when your brain is developing. I think my son's gotten smarter since he finally started eating red meat. Yum.

Usually I use a small piece of carving material that I have left over and whip up a little someting with a small logbook. It's not a big time consuming detailed piece.

I have gone the opposite direction with my HHs. I put just as much time and effort into them as I would into a traditional or postal letterbox. My hope is that if I make them really awesome and it is obvious that I poured a lot of care into them, then maybe people will be more likely to take the time to log them.
So far, it seems to be working.

Oh, man! And have the image be Professor Quirrell/Voldemort? Maybe a two-sided stamp with both faces? Maybe a second box with Aragog? The centaurs? A unicorn or two?

Pinch me! I feel faint!

At least, it'll give me something to look forward to once I'm done reading book seven. :-)
