The only time I do LTC's is when I am inspired by a theme for an exchange. It is a topic or subject that I like and I just do whatever to make it work. But the ideas do not come fully formed prior to having a subject. I join the exchange and then I am forced to make the LTC....so I obviously like the subject matter and have a stamp in mind when I join up. Creating the LTC usually involves more....colors, textures, and those decisions come later..For example. I join a Stars Wars exchange because I love Star Wars...I want to do Yoda, I have a great idea for a swampy green image, but he is already taken....so I decide to do Han Solo in CARBONATE. I have an idea to do it so it looks like metal, so I need lite grey card stock and I do my stamp in black on it...i t just all comes together during the process

I agree with FL4...it makes MUCH more sense for Florida to hold their PAL day in November.

Maybe we go ahead with the one planned and then post for a second PAL day in the fall and let the numbers speak for themselves. :)

It’s finally our turn for a theme page! Look at that view!
I hope other seek out Dillsburg to look for boxes but I must confess it happens to be stacked for boxes right now because of this weekends event.
I guess I'm saying - wish there were long term - sorry but they are not.

And please, if you are a vacationer in Florida, plant in sturdy, lock n lock or similar brand that has snap locks, or sturdy screw top plastic jars with gaskets. Flimsyware, regular Tupperware, and pouches don't hold up in the heat, wetness and bugs, and I don't want to replace those with my own lock n locks. So basically, we are willing to help, yes, but it should be minimal maintenance if the container is sturdy. And please remember, no boxes at Disney or other amusement parks. Thanks!!!

I have boxes planted all over the country. I have had good luck with people helping me, except on one box that I planted in a boxing desert.

When I see a tracker that interests me (people on it, content) I then search for an image before signing up unless I'm seriously excited and can't wait. Once I have an image I carve, then I go to the craft area and find paper and embellishments. If I can't find anything I might go back to google for card ideas if I didn't do that already with my image search. But before that the LTCs I was getting in swaps is where my inspiration was coming from when I first started. Those cards drove me to be worthy of joining a swap (I like to make sure someone somewhere is happy with my card). Just how I felt at the time.

I don't put a brick on them. I just write a very polite, "No, thank you!" in magic marker on the applications, stuff them back into the envelope and send them back. I hope that works for the post office! I've been thinking it might just help save a job or two, given the volume of junk mail. It also seems as if I have been taken off a few of the lists since I started doing that, because I don't get as many junk mail things in my mailbox -- of course that could also just be because they've moved to email spam, instead! :)

You plant a box while you're here, and we'll adopt it!

Part of the problem is knowing where to plant. I once found a geocache in the Orlando area. As I found out from security when I got back to my car, it was in a private park. He said most parks "south of the Green way" are private. (I let the cache owner know, and it has since been archived.). And Kirbert has pointed out the ephemeral nature of landmarks in Florida.

And we don't want to plant in Disney World, or any other parks.

Most of the problem with vacation boxes is knowing where it is safe to plant. I guess that we could ask locals where to plant before we go.

POLL: Move PAL Day?
Board: State: Florida
May 1, 2014 7:11am
Thread Board
In this thread, FloridaFour had the wonderful idea of moving our PAL Day to winter. I was thinking late January, or heck, even February 14, and we can call it PALentine's Day. :)

Pros:
Better weather
Not involved in the national event, which has become a bit of a mess
Competing against ourselves rather than other states (though some may see this as a con)
Making our own rules (for example, having it stretch over several days)
More possibilities for plants from vacationers

Cons:
Not participating in the excitement of national PAL Day. This is a big one, and may outweigh everything for some folks.

So here's the poll:

AGREE if you'd like to move PAL Day to winter, and not participate in the national event.
DISAGREE if you'd like to participate in the national event, as we do now.
INTERESTING if you'd like a combination. Maybe a token box for the national event, and all-out for winter.

For what it's worth, here's my $.02.

I love the idea, but think we should have it either mid-November or the first week of December. I checked my stats and the clue hits and finds on my boxes went up dramatically in December (thank you snowbirds!) and then dropped in April. The earlier in our "season" we host this, the more opportunity we have to hunt each other's boxes before the weather gets unbearable again.

Eeyoremama hosts a big event in Feb and will be working on those carves/plants and FloridaFour and I are hosting a big event in March and will also be busy carving and planting then. By hosting the PAL day before the holidays, it would allow us (or at least me, as I shouldn't speak for them) to participate in a more robust way.

And, I still plan on participating in the national event, as well as the other virtual events that are going on this summer and December :)
