Zutter page protectors
Board: BIA Addicts

Thread Board (disabled)
Hello

Does anyone have experience with the Zutter page protectors? I need to make some booklets that will be weather proof for an outdoor training class (not a logbook, shock!) and while some of the 4x6 index card pages can be laminated others (i.e., the schedule) will need to be changed each time the class is taught so I thought maybe I could put that into a page protector.

I want to use different colors for the covers as there will be 9 different groups so my plan (unless someone talks me out of it) is to affix colored paper to chipboard and then laminate that before punching with the BIA.

As to dimensions, I called and found out that the page protectors have 10 holes and I also see from the details that "4"X6" Page Protectors fit 4X6 Cover-Alls for Page Protectors AND 7.5X 5 Acrylic & Clipboard Covers and 7.5X5 Chipboard Covers." Would you suggest that I make my covers 7.5 x 5 also? That seems awfully large for 4x6 index cards. I understand some additional height/width to allow for the holes on the page protectors but adding 1/2" or 3/4" to the sides seems like a lot and I don't need/want a lot of overhang; the more compact the better. If anyone has experience with this, please let me know otherwise I'll have to wait until they arrive to decide on the dimensions. I'd rather get started now and just put it together when they arrive.

Thanks for any help you can provide

I'm not sure what your question is but here's my experience with the removable 8X8 page protectors. There is an additional half inch to the page protector due to the attachment holes to the owires. The cover I made with just shy of 8.5 inch and the page protector still overhangs just a little bit. Still works fine for me because it makes it easier to flip to the page protectors. Good luck with your project, I've never used cover-alls.

Where do you guys buy your supplies? I heard that they're cheaper online. And what paper works well for inside pages?

I didn't see any BIA supplies at Stampeaz. Does Webfoot normally carry them?

I also am a newbie and have only used unlined index cards but they are working great. Purchased at Staples in pkgs of 500 are cheap. As to O-wires, Wry Me posted this recently:
in the clearance section at binditall.com, they almost always have super deals on 2:1 o-wires, but they come in boxes of 100. It's the cheapest place I've found it, especially if you can get someone to go in with you. Or you can bundle 'em up and sell by 10's at an event or donate some to event raffles, etc.

Hope this helps

Cool. I've used unlined index cards as pages for handmade books... I'll give it a try with my new toy.

I use cardstock. Seems cheaper than index cards, and my boxes are smaller than index cards, so I have to cut them, anyway.

I loved big reams of Georgia Pacific cardstock, but my Wal-Mart stopped carrying it.

I looked online and found a paper supply store in my area. I think it caters to schools and teachers. Anyway I found a very smooth, heavy paper and paid $20 for a ream of it. I know it's a bit pricey but it makes a TON of logbooks large and small and the smooth paper gives us beautiful stamp images with no 'bleed' through.

Hobby Lobby carries Cinch and a few Zutter supplies. Tuesday Morning used to carry some Zutter but I haven't been there in a few months so no idea if they still do. Joann carries them online (but not in stores).

As for paper, I use 28lb paper and it's thick enough that ink doesn't bleed through. I get my paper at Staples and it was $15 for a 500 sheet ream last time I was there. I personally feel like I get a better stamp impression from this ultra-bright coated paper than I did when I was using index cards. But everyone has a favorite. :)

I've been unhappy with the index cards lately, b/c the stamped image was crappy. There was too much texture, so I'm interested to know where/what you're getting, please.

I used the card stock I buy at Michaels or JoAnn for my inside pages. They have it on sale all the time, usually buy one get one free or 50% off. It's thick, durable, and stamps don't bleed through. It's not heavy card stock so it's easy to flip through.

I just bought 40 Owires for 20.00 on Amazon. It was a variety pack so all different colors but all the 1/2 inch which I use the most. I might see if the binditall.com has a better deal?

As for the covers for my books, I just use colorful design papers from scrapbook or craft stores. Sometimes I fold them around thin cardboard.

Thanks, guys, for the suggestions about sources for o-wires and for paper. I'm looking forward to playing around with my new machine and experimenting a bit. I saw online that someone had made a cover out of a soda can, so there are lots of possibilities...
Circular logbooks

I'm looking for suggestions about making a circular logbook for a small round LnL. The circles would be 2.5" diameter. I can get 3 punches if I am exactly perfect in lining up the papers but that seems tricky so likely a lot of wasted pages due to mispunches. Is the BIA not a good way to bind round books? Or are there any suggestions for making it work well? Thanks for your help

I haven't tried it with circles. But I have done it with odd sized papers, where I needed more than 6 holes. What I did was make a paper template, make a mark on the template of where I have to line it up. Then use that template every time I punch more paper.

For circles, I just use a regular one hole puncher, and use ribbon, ring or cord.

I have done the round BIA type with circular logbooks. In short, it does not go well. You're better off cutting a flat edge and binding it if thats for sure what you want. BUT, if you are open to suggestions, try string or a circle tack or anything but BIA. It doesn't fit well in the circle LNL anyway.

I really prefer the aluminum binding posts for the round ones. It basically binds it at one point, which seems better to me, and they don't rust. You just twist the pages you don't want out of the way and it seems to leave more of the paper available for stamping, since the binding takes up little room, and because it fits well in the container, you can make the pages larger since you don't have to compensate for the binding coil.

aluminum binding posts

Hmmm....I have some of those around! Thanks for the idea.

I also have the metal brads with the bendable "legs". KKDM, is that what you mean by a circular tack?

Peace

In my experience, I have seen the metal brads, usually broken and/or rusted. The posts are much thicker, and don't have the tabs.

I've tried those. I've also used plastic zipties. Just make sure to cut off the tail so it doesn't get caught outside the lip of the LnL.

Has anyone had any luck with making fabric covered chipboard and punching it with the BIA? Is this possible or am I just setting myself up for disappointment? I have the perfect fabric for a postal logbook.....any other ideas besides BIA?

Thanks for your advice

The manufacturer claims it's possible. I think if I tried it I'd make sure I glued well and let it dry throughly before punching the holes. You could always try a test run with some throw-down materials. You could always do a codex style logbook.

Yes. My current logbook is scrap fabric, and it's holding up far better than the paper I usually cover the chipboard with. Instead of folding the edges, I trimmed a bit at the corners to decrease the bulk. I coated the chipboard thoroughly with glue and let it dry completely with something on top to weigh it down. It tends to curl otherwise. After you punch the holes, treat the fresh holes with glue to prevent fraying. Use the thinnest board possible and plan to use a lot of force. After you have it covered, it's quite thick. I think I painted the top of the fabric with glue where I intended to punch the holes to make it stiffer.

You could try your hand at codex binding http://www.atlasquest.com/tutorials/logbooks/codex/ or just hole punch it and bind it with ribbon, if the BIA doesn't work.

Hi Everyone,

I'm so excited to find this board. It has been more helpful than all the YouTube videos I've watched so far.

So, I just got a BIA and have a really big question. I took 3 x 5 cards and halved them to make small logbooks. This would be 2 1/2" x 3" pages. How do you punch them? The manual says to use the spacer bar to make up to 1" books, but I can't find a way, unless I just eyeball it? Am I missing something? Thanks folks for any help.

Patty

What I do with an odd size, is make a template (just use one of your pages). Make a mark on the middle of the page, and slide the page over to fit. Sometines i do have to eyeball and mess up a few pages, but i have the marking already on it, for that one that is just right. Then I use that template to help me line up the rest if the pages.
