Please someone tell me this has happened to you too so we won't feel quite so special...

I found a geocache once where the contents had been replaced with dog poo. I posted a log to that effect and also sent a message to the cache owner. Bad things don't just happen to letterboxes.

I'm just curious, where do the pictures come from that randomly seem to "pop up" in the board messages?

The link for those are at http://www.atlasquest.com/syndicate/psa.jpg. If you refresh the image, you'll get a randomly displayed one. It's also possible to "hand-pick" an image by going to http://www.atlasquest.com/syndicate/psa.jpg?gId=x and replacing that last X with a number between 0 and 78. There are a total of 79 images (including #0) at this time, but sometimes I add new ones when I'm feeling like I have nothing better to do.

There's one I've seen a couple of times that is pretty recognizable from my area....

A good number of the photos came from my AT thru-hike, and another significant group came from photos that I took in Central America. The rest are a handful from all over the place--Yellowstone, Mount Rainier, Las Vegas, Old Idaho State Penn, Dartmoor, Straford-upon-Avon, Boson subway, New York, etc. If there's a specific image that you wanted to know about, you'll definitely have to be more specific!

Also, what in the world is "yarn bombing"?

The world's second greatest hobby. *nodding*

I remember that. It was back in the day when I was using a rigged up method to download clues from favorite searches to my PDA.

I remember it too. I made it a policy of mine to always use "post" requests before doing anything that would delete something. Spiders generally don't "post" data--just "get" it.

I even double-checked that AQ required a "post" before deleting a find just to make sure that couldn't have caused the problem, but I didn't find anything way around those confirmation pages. I'm completely baffled by this case.

Thanks to Brenda from Rgang for letting me know about Glenn/Safari Man. He was a legend in Ohio letterboxing and beyond. My mind wonders back now to all the events and fun we all had. He will be greatly missed.

Oh no! I am so sorry! I had the immense pleasure of communicating on the boards and through aq mail with him. He was an extremely talented and gifted carver. I am so sorry for his family. He will be missed by his AQ family as well.

It's an image of the "Stoneys" bull at the junction heading to Seeley Lake in Montana. I wouldn't think there are too many of those... but maybe it has a twin....

I'll check out the links. Thanks!

Thanks! I had a feeling it would be too late to figure anything out. It's probable that it happened long ago and I never noticed that different ribbon until now.

I've been digging through all of our journals and stuff and unfortunately discovered that this was during our "stamps on index cards" era. The theory was that we'd only have to carry index cards and then we could glue them into our logbook later. The problem is we neglected to label like 90% of those index cards (in a "we'll do it later" kind of thing that never happened.) That's why we've mostly switched back to just stamping straight into the logbook again. At least it keeps the stamps in order by find date, and we're more likely to label it immediately.

Oh well! I'm thinking this is getting filed in the "the numbers aren't supposed to matter anyway!" part of my brain. Mainly cause there's no other choice!

Thanks for the months of premium! If I'm able to figure out some of the ones we're missing, that'll potentially help!

Everyone is more than welcome to post their stories of Safari Man on the message boards, but please also sign his tributes page. Share your stories of him--I'll add more server power if I have to handle the heavy volume because I just know there are a lot of them!

Rest in peace, Safari Man. I'll miss him. A lot of us are going to miss him.

Oh no, this really saddens me. The first time I met him, it was at my first event in Gatlinburg as a newbie. He made such a great impression on me with letterboxing. After meeting him I was determined to find everyone of his boxes in PF and Gatlinburg. He was always so good in replying about his boxes and even carved a stamp for my event last year. One only has to meet him once to know what a great guy he was. He truly was a fine gentleman and will be miss dearly. My sympathies to his family and hugs to Okie Dog. :(

We went to a Wildlife Refuge, found a swimming hole/natural spring, and enjoyed most of the day just sitting out there soaking in nature. It wasn't letterboxing, but it was an awesome day away from civilization. :)

Considering it took months before you noticed this problem, I had a hunch you weren't all that big on numbers. Probably like me. You know "approximately" where you are, but you don't really monitor it very closely either because.... who has time for that? =)

The theory was that we'd only have to carry index cards and then we could glue them into our logbook later. The problem is we neglected to label like 90% of those index cards (in a "we'll do it later" kind of thing that never happened.)

I had an index cards phase.... They're all labeled, but I never could keep them in any kind of order or together. It's pretty much a mess for me too!

We were disappointed that the Louvre had been taken, however, and all we found was a plastic bag of dog doo

Really? That's disgusting. Honest to goodness what is wrong with some people?

You may be reading more in the message than is there. You may be thinking someone replaced your box with a plastic bag of doo-doo. But maybe there was a forgotten bag of doo-doo in the area (sometimes dog walkers pick up their dog's refuse, then leave the bag by the side of the trail, meaning to pick it up on the way back, then forget); it's not commendable, but may have absolutely nothing to do with your box being missing. Personally, I'd rather see the bag of doo-doo than the piles that are ignored by people, even when there are bag stations for the purpose nearby.

I don't think I could pinpoint exactly where on a map I took that photo, but Seeley Lake in Montana sounds about right. *nodding* That one was taken on a road trip Amanda and I had taken, first visiting Glacier NP then driving down to Yellowstone, and we took it somewhere between the two.

This saddens me tremendously. I had the pleasure to meet up with Safari Man three times, once here on my own turf just last Christmas. Each time I always felt I was in the presence of someone very special. Rest in Peace, Glenn.

For Georgette and Okie Dog if there is anything at all that Jo and I can do for you please let us know.

Was informed N/A was also like "Not Acceptable" and could be used to indicate to the owner that it's the searcher's opinion either the location of the plant was "Not Acceptable" or that the clue was misleading, deceptive or confusing and therefore in the opinion of the searcher Not Acceptable.

Any way why does my find log now show a green check mark beside "Don't Ax Me, Please" as if I found the Lb when I haven't. Both the owner and I have previously communicated via email as the owner wanted to know why I selected N/A when the Lbox is "available" where hidden. When selecting N/A is it normal for a green check mark to appear beside the Lbox as if it was found by me. I never changed my initial report from N/A, so why the green check mark beside this Lb as if I actually found it, which isn't the case?

We will greatly and sadly miss Safari Man. I just sat here and cried while reading the posts. He was truly a humble man and he loved talking and sharing stories with everyone. It is such an honor to have known him, shared conversation with him, and letterboxed with him. It will not be the same without him for sure, especially when reading the captions under pictures....he had a wonderful sense of humor as well. Rest in Peace Glenn, we love you!!

Because you marked it as "Found".
But clearly, you wish this find to be removed, so let me wave my Magic Wand.. tadaaaaa!

But N/A has nothing to do with the "acceptability" of the box. You were misinformed.
