those are interesting. the ones i have are flat, but similar idea. no 4-D to them.

basically, you need to put them somehow so that every car headlight *doesn't* catch them, because you don't want to draw that much attention to the box. However, you *do* want your intended audience to be able to find them. In the New England area, often people will be directed to the start of a trail, on on a road, so they're looking for a specific sign/signage. Then they park, get out of a car, and start looking for the tacks in the woods. The specific technique is known as "pan and scan" among a segment of boxers. It can be done at ground height, eye height - wherever you want, although usually eye height is preferred (less stuff grows over your tacks).

Can you direct me to any boxes that have this sort of clue? I haven't had any experience with wording clues for a night time drive by. Where I'm thinking of would be from a parking area so not likely that there would be many others driving by but there is no artificial light so a flashlight would be the only hope of finding the tacks in the dark. Before I get too carried away with this though, I'm going to go there in the dark to ensure safe passage.

I like your idea of eye level vs ground level though I do hate to damage trees and ground level would provide more options for using fallen trees.....so pros and cons to each.

Hi
I am going to make a tray for my dad. I want to put pictures on it with mod podge. I have used mod podge before with tissue paper with much success. But tissue is nice and thin. I have never used thicker photo paper. Will it work well or will it create bumpy lines? Also, will it matter if I print out the pictures on good quality paper or do I need to use photo paper? I would think paper will be thinner, therefore not making as thick lines. And if its covered by the mod podge than it shouldn't fade right?

any ideas?

thanks
Vicki

Love it!!
I power thaw frozen stuff by throwing it in a large pot of warm water. Dump it once after cooling and refill. Things are completely thawed in 15 -20 minutes

I love modge podge. I haven't used it for stuff I have printed though. Wouldn't the images run? I guess you could use a laser printer, but I am not sure how it would look since I have never tried it.

I would just test it out. Print some stuff up and try it out. What's the worst that can happen? Good luck.

What do you mean by forced activity? Wouldn't a beagle like hiking? Wouldn't exercise be good for a puppy? I am not being a snot. I truly want to know what you mean so I understand.

I am by no means a sprinter or a 10 mile hiker. I am sure a puppy could keep up. I am also a mom of 5 year old twins so I am not a stranger to adapting my plans to accommodate unpredictability.

Oh, and I was joking when I said let the 5 year old hold the leash. :) Sometimes the internet ruins a joke.

Good question. You may have to spray the images with fixative, or paint lightly with a fixative to keep colors from running. Try it with some old photos first, as an experiment... there are some really thin photo papers out now, that are almost as thin as paper.

I haven't really used mod podge, but a thicker gel medium should hold heavier papers if the mod podge doesn't. They come in matte, satin and gloss.

Also does it matter if there are lines? To me, that's kind of the point of collage, the bumpy 3D effect.

You may be able to flatten a fair amount, pressing with the edge of a credit card. Then maybe add thin layers of mod podge to fill in creases.

If you want a collage to be completely flat, no lines, and from a photo..... have you read about transferring photos with gel medium? It's an involved process, but looks interesting, you basically take the paper right off the photo, and you are left with a flexible, skin-like image you can apply to different things.

Please update with what you end up doing, I'd be interested in what worked!

...and I LOVE the fact that there's no blade exchanging--Ughhh.

There's no reason to do that. First off, the Speedball handle is too bulky to use anyway. Just buy a handful of Speedball pen holders (less than $2 each) and press one nib into each one. Just pick up the one you need. The pen holders are a much better shape for stamp carving anyway. The nib that stays in my Speedball gouge holder is the #5, the great big U that I need to really shove through the rubber.

If you're cheap, you can just buy some 1/4" wooden dowel from Home Depot, cut them into 6" lengths, and tie a nib to the end of each one with glue and wire.

I glued an old sig. stamp to the top of a stamp pad along time ago, but I don't use that stamp anymore. I don't think Hobby Lobby has the reinkers. At least ours does not. HH-What's the name of the place you got the reinkers?

I started using the versafine black also because of the attached 'flip top' lid. So much easier and it stamps really well, but only comes in black as far as I know.

See, this spot is truly a "park and grab", because of the nature of the area. So I suppose I'd just have to just try to make use of the fire tacks as best as possible.

I just recently bought a right handed K gouge. Took a couple of minutes to get used to, but I think I've found a new friend! It is awesome!! I acquired a reverse recently and still haven't gotten the hang of that thing. Not sure what the heck Mrs. Wolf is doing with it to have such disgusting results!!

Sure, why not? OTOH, you can also buy reflective tacks at Walmart in the sporting goods department; hunters use them to find their way in and out of the woods in the dark.

They're pretty much all a piece of reflective tape stuck onto a thumbtack or pushpin. If the tack is flat-headed, you push it into the front of a tree -- but you might need to press another into the back of the tree to help finders follow their way back to the parking lot in the dark. With the pushpin style, you can press a pin into the side of a tree, and it's visible coming or going.

The metal ones tend to rust, which causes the reflective tape to peel off. Some have better plating on them than others, though, and don't rust as quickly.

I printed a computer ink jet image once and the ink did run when I mod podged it. It was printed on card stock. I stuck with it anyway. It gave it an added effect but that might not be what you're looking for. I would think photo paper will work much better with a less chance of the ink running. Perhaps you can get the pictures made into glossy photos like at Target or Walmart. Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Best way to order stuff from the States?

I have been looking online for some letterboxing supplies for carving/log book making, and keep getting discouraged by the shipping costs to send stuff from the US to Ontario. I was told about one place that you can ship to in Port Huron, Michigan for a flat fee of $5 (packages up to 75 lbs.). Since we are in Sarnia a lot it seems like an easy option, as long as bridge traffic is light.
So now I am curious...any other less expensive methods that you have come across?

Hope all that helps.

Someone else suggested using a guardrail as a hiding spot for a park and grab. Here is one we did that was exactly that. We arrived after dark and I did need a flashlight to peer into the hiding space. Using the directions, this one could also be found in the daytime with no trouble but if you used reflective tape or a fire tack on the guardrail post in some area where there are a lot of guardrails to choose from I would think it would be harder to find during the day.

Good luck and thanks everyone for the suggestions.
