mile long wreck on a interstate in Detroit. At least 13 in hospital, at least 3 dead, about 30 cars involved.

Two of the three were children.

There was also another thirty plus car collision closer to my home up there. A friend posted a photo of it. Both accidents were due to white-outs.

Awful.

So I've acquired quite a number of X boxes (likely many more than Miss Moon) and I say it has more to do with networking and the connections you make with others, but you choose to believe it's luck?

But then, I've never been one to rely on luck. I make my own fortune. ;)

Have you tried to find the one right there in your own state? From what I've heard that one right there is more amazing than most of the traveling ones!

Don't just wait for things to come to you -- go find them! It's what makes this hobby fun! :)

Hi all! I am visiting freeport this weekend for Spa Knit and Spin, and am planning on doing some boxing as well. I see that there are plenty of fabulous looking boxes up there... any hints and suggestions to make choosing boxes for my short trip? Can't wait!

It is all about the network of fellow boxer friends that will open the door to these traveling boxes. We have seen traveling clues as well. Just passed a clue on for a box planted in 2006. The clues are not online. Many have signed the clue "log". It will be interesting to see how many have searched for the box.

I have the opposite problem with geocaching and letterboxing. I usually get TOO many people ASKING me to take them. Problem with me is that I usually don't go boxing or caching with people generally because I don't plan it in a way that it is all I do. Where i live it is rural so I have to travel, and I am usually grabbing boxes in towns where I am because of an appointment or something. It just doesn't seem possible most the time to bring people with me. They really need to already be with me that day. If I do trips/day trips with my parents they are good about letting me box and cache while in areas I haven't made my mark yet. Actually sometimes they insist because they know it brings them to cool and unexplored places

Suggestion from some geocaching legends...
Board: Geocaching and Other Stashing Games

I had an email today from some geocachers who have over 16,000 finds since 2002. They criticized my geocache hybrid as confusing and wasting their time, because NOT AT POSTED COORDINATES, was not in the first short part of the cache description. I did have it as the first part of the full description and in the hint. I admit, at first I felt defensive of my hybrid...... but I realised they were right.

They had said their reviewers insisted final coords lead to the cache. I know from research, that it just has to be an integral and major part of the cache hunt. I've seen several hybrids that had clues and coordinates. I am lucky that my reviewer worked with me on my caches.

At any rate, after having over 50 finds on my cache in over a year, I have updated my listing of Wildlife of Chesnut park to include the word letterbox hybrid in the cache name. I also put NOT AT POSTED COORDINATES in the very first part of the description.

I emailed the distinguished cachers and thanked them, but did say I quite like the CLUES in my hybrid and will keep doing it my way, but that I valued their suggestion, and have changed the wording.

So anyway...we can all learn from each other.... always try not to see red when you get an email... or see through the red, anyway...

update: I got an email back from them apologizing and saying they didn't mean to criticize...

They even changed the wording on their find log to be more pleasant. (it WAS critical, and said I had wasted their time), but I guess they felt badly that I actually wrote back! Wow, a cache owner who reads their listing and maintains their box!!!!!!!

I wrote them back again that it was ok, and that I agreed with them and changed my wording.

Wow, Jones Crew - if i were you, i would go for that box!! given the names associated with it, it's going to be PHENOMENAL!!

And that's the first thing you do - you pay attention to what other letterboxers say. you keep your ears and eyes open. you remember things. you read and read and read. you keep up etiquette; you seal baggies, you close boxes, you rehide well. you donate stamps and learn graciousness. you go to events and learn from others. you carve and plant and carve some more. you take out the garbage and help clean up at events. you look for and find a lot of boxes. you bide your time and study clues.

you earn your stripes.

not because other people don't want to share, but because that's what it takes. just like any other group. it takes time to become part of a group, a culture. And when you share yourself, others share with you. It's that simple.

There's a geocache around here that is based on Alien Alphabet.

There's always the option of using a constructed language like Lojban. I'm planning on doing a letterbox based on Elvish, but I hear it's been done before.

because NOT AT POSTED COORDINATES, was not in the first short part of the cache description.

This is the way that it is done around here, but there is no requirement to do this. I think that the reason it is done around here is because of comments just like you recieved.

They had said their reviewers insisted final coords lead to the cache. I know from research, that it just has to be an integral and major part of the cache hunt.

You are correct. However, you won't get anywhere by ticking off the reviewers. I think that you have done well by working with your reviewer, as you stated. If the reviewer in their area doesn't follow the guidelines then just be glad that you don't have to deal with their reviewer.

And have fun making the hybrids.

So you know how you sometimes really need a goal? Something to push you? The Color Run

is opening it's registration for Buffalo on Friday. I've been eyeing this race, pondering how far I would drive for it. One of my goals when I turned 40 was to run a 5k before my 41st. This race is a week after my birthday, and I can't imagine a more perfect way of meeting my goal!

The odds are zilch! I don't permit boxes anymore. A while back, I corresponded with Chris Holmes who was in charge of the outdoor programs in Texas state parks, which includes the geocaching program. He's British, by the way, so he should know about letterboxing. He assigned one of his rangers to meet with me at Huntsville SP, where I had already established a relationship with park management and permitted all the boxes in the park. I took a letterbox so he could see what one actually looked like. LSQ and I met with him and the Huntsville ranger for about two hours and I thought we presented a good case. My goal was to get a separate but equal permit application for letterboxing, to eliminate the annual renewal requirement, and to pick a date where all boxes planted prior to that date could be grandfathered. After about a month, he called me and said that they (Chris Holmes I assume) had determined that letterboxing was too small to worry about. He said in so many words that they didn't have the resources or manpower to manage it as a separate activity, but he would modify the geocaching permit to include letterboxing. That's probably why there is now the check box on the form. I also noticed that the new form says nothing about the annual renewal of the permit, but I haven't tried to pin them down on that point. I consider my state park boxes expendable, but I don't worry about them being removed by park personnel. They don't have time to worry about them.

If you can get out of the city "Ascent to Mt. Olympus" is a nice series up a mountain. Amazing carves.
"The BIG Series" has some great (huge!) carves and is a very short walk for 10 boxes, under 1/2 mile.
"Crime and Punishment Micro Series" is a fun walk on a small trail. All are micro boxes and not snow friendly from what I remember.
