If you like the idea and are worried about water in the camera, Kodak puts out a single use camera that is made for underwater use. Might want to try that. Take care. Jane

I'd actually be more concerned about temperature fluctuations than water. High heat will spoil film faster than you can say "cheese." I know they make disposable digitals these days... are they too costly? and are they susceptible to the same temperature issues?

but I think it's a really cool idea!

A boxer in our area has included a camera in at least one of his boxes for a few years. He has a whole series of boxes which require solving math problems. His students get credit for finding the boxes and for one of the boxes they need to take a photo of themselves with the camera to prove they were there. (The rest of us just stamp in, relieved to have solved everything at least well enough to find the box!)

Yep, we've sponsored (via adoption) a geocache in Seoul, Korea and it contained one of those disposable cameras. It's interesting--even though the geocache has had dozens of visitors the entire roll of film on the camera hasn't yet been exhausted! dvn2r ckr

Camo duct tape

I just bought my first roll of camo tape today. The stuff is nice. Wishing I had it when I planted my last series
But, um, I didn't know that the stuff would have a bit of a smell. It sure doesn't smell like duct tape. I'm glad it's not strong.

There was some debate in some old posts on how the tape would hold up in weather extremes. I put a light coat of varnish on it. I focused mainly on the seams. So I'm hoping it holds up.
But at least my box smells like varnish now and not like......

The camo tape I used didn't smell, particularly. Maybe a bit like the adhesive, but nothing really bad.

Quote I think a schedule is okay, but be prepared to be flexible on most things. There can be a lot of ebb and flow at a gathering.

I'd add to that to try not to plan TOO much at the pavillion, if possible. There's usually so many boxes to stamp into around the place that folks almost never leave, then regret not having picked up the local area boxes while they were in town. Everytime we go to an event, we fully expect tobox the area a bit, but usually end up spending the bulk of the time at the pavillion do everything from socializing to event stamping to solving the mystery of the hidden boxe in the tables/roof/slab flooring of the place! :-) It's fun, but when you live too far away to return, you really want to do as many of the permanent boxes as you can.

When we do a WNY gathering, we basically do exactly what Doug said...a beginning & ending time, plus a time for a group photo & a raffle afterward (which is the LAST 15 or 20 minutes of the gathering). It works out pretty well!

Hello All!

Trying to reach as many people as possible since we live where there are many summer visitors. Don't want anyone to use part of their vacation for a missing box!

I will be replacing this box within the week with a temorary stamp (my practice one). It's not as good as the one I placed, but still OK. I don't have time to re-carve a new one right now, but I will soon. I will repost when the box (w/ the temp stamp) is replaced.

If you are visiting & going for this box before it is replaced, please contact me off list.

Thanks,

That's because you plant your boxes on horse trails.

That is great news (about your friend, I mean).
Though I understand how difficult it is to make detours for LBs....I'm now at a conference in Madison, WI and *fully intended* to stop for boxes in Port Huron, MI, a few other MI spots, downtown Chicago, Cherry Valley, IL, and Rockford, IL...about a dozen in all. How many did we get? ZIP. Between traffic delays, fatigue and other things to do, we just didn't make it.
However, there are a few around here and I'm determined to plant a few (we're here for a week). Maybe I should've posted this in the Wisconsin discussion ;-)

I still have half a dozen boxes to plant in Guelph, so your friend should have lots to keep her busy.

I'll be watching for her/your stamp. Tell her to do the LBs in Rockwood. The pooch and I did them a couple of days ago and had a great hike. The geography of the conservation area alone is well worth the visit. It's a terrific bonus to have 4 LBs to find as well as beautiful landscape to view.

Wow, that's some scary lurking/stalking, Hiker ;-) Quick response!

I planted a Madison-themed box in Guelph (http://letterboxing.org/BoxView.php?boxnum=16292&boxname=Man-Nook_Ale) after visiting last August: I was so taken with this place! Now I've got one box ready to plant (silly conference sessions got in the way all day today!!:-) and ideas for at least a couple more plus a box that another Guelph boxer gave me to place somewhere. So you'll have at least 3 in the area, perhaps even more, I should think.

I'm very excited to do your Picnic...I'd do it tonight but there's a big concert in the square! ;-)

We certainly would welcome another excuse to visit Madison - lots of interesting places on State St. and surrounding areas...

I hope you DO have time to do our Picnic box; it's a nice walk (but probably a hot one this summer!). We live in the Milwaukee area, about 90 miles away, and just did a boxing trip to Madison 2 weeks ago to find some of the newer boxes. We got a friend partially hooked on that trip, so she is coming over next Monday night so we can show her how to carve her signature stamp!

For the Letterboxing at Laudholm event we had a very tight schedule, and that didn't work out so well. Though it can be helpful for busy events, it can also make people feel obligated to participate in those things and disappointed if it falls through or changes times.

I much prefer a more casual event, and thus - no hourly schedule. I am not excited about the way that I see gatherings trending towards themes and over planning, raffles and gimmicks to get people to attend.

Well, there's your answer, then. Plant your boxes on horse trails, and they'll be camouflaged by smell as well as by sight!

Quote As I'm in the planning stages of a first gathering for Ontario I really appreciate any tips! Can you tell me more about the raffle? Is there a cost? What is the prize?

Oh, the raffle is nothing big, really. People usually donate some boxing supplies and items (containers, inking stuff, carving materials, t-shirts, even logbooks) and then we draw to see who gets what. The money from the raffle goes to the cost of the pavilion and the free food, so that helps more than just the donations box does.

I agree. Some of the other gatherings we've been to have had so much going on that we were overwhelmed and worn out within a few hours and hadn't really done much boxing outside the pavilion. So, the WNY events we've planned have erally been nothing but a start time and a raffle/group pic time, which signals the end of the day. We only add a raffle to make sure folks actually return for the picture. The rest of the day is at anyone's leisure. Thus far, it's seemed to work out well!

We DO use a theme, but that's more so that I know what kind of event stamp to carve (or so I can plant stamps that were in PLBs I've done!) :-)

another cute movie--

definitely a chick flick but a great way to spend a hot afternoon when studying just wasn't going to happen! I really like Julianne Moore and I've always liked Pierce Brosnan (ever since Remington Steele hit the airwaves way back when).

And the movies currently in my queue awaiting that time when I finish my final two exams (which better be soon):

Whale Rider
My Home in Umbria
Cheaper by the Dozen (the original)
The Seagull's Laughter (Icelandic)

I'll let you know how they go...

Denis Leary was on Conan O'Brien last night and he promoted A Very Long Engagement too! It actually was pretty funny. He said it was a chick movie, but had WWI stuff for the men and Jodie Foster speaking French and in Sex scenes!
He really was on to promote his TV show Rescue Me. It is on the F/X channel (which I don't have cable and can't see) but the DVD's are out at the video stores. I highly recommend Rescue Me! Great show.
