Night box?

Are there any night boxes in the SF bay area, or anywhere in Northern CA? I'm hearing others talk about it and I would love to see what it's about before attempting to plant my own. It sounds like fun!

At least it is not up her nose. My daughter thought it was hilarious to stick not one, but several pieces of veggies up her nose (the frozen mixed kind with the square carrots and potatoes). I would run my thumb down the side of her nose and it was like a Pez dispenser, pop, pop, pop.

I finally did my solo overnight backpack adventure! Of course I happened to pick the coldest night of the year to do it! I hiked the Red Cedar Hiking Trail in Giant City State Park in Makanda, IL. It is in the Shawnee National Forest. The day was perfect and the sights were amazing. The trail markers were pretty easy to follow but the ground was covered in leaves and I lost the trail a few times. There were also a lot of rocks and boulders underneath the leaves that made it slow going. (turned each ankle once) The only thing that could have been better is if the temperature had not dropped down to 30 degrees that night! I had icicles on the inside if my tent from my breathing. There was so much frost on the outside I could have made a couple of snowballs from it! The good thing is that because of the cold there were NO bugs and almost no critters, except noisy possums, moving around at night. Something woke me up about 3am with an awful racket. Whatever it was it was really pissed off! (All I could think of was werewolf.)
I am so proud of myself for doing the hike when I almost turned back because I had to cross over a very steep creek bed. I was not sure if I could get up the other side with the 25# on my back! I walked around a bit and found an easier way down and then an easier way up. All in all it was a very fun and good experience. I am thinking about doing the same trail in the spring just to see if it can be any more beautiful.

We still have lots of room in this tracker. I'm hoping that we can fill this one. I hope to see more pepole come and join in on the fun. http://www.atlasquest.com/showinfo.html?gTrackerId=4526

ANY box can be a night box provided you think you can do it safely. It's tricky because you don't have full field of vision, but some can be done......read the clues and decide for yourself.

Really the only thing that makes a night box a night box is the use of fire tacks (http://www.firetacks.com/) which reflect to mark the trail. There's a code for the tacks which I can't tell you off the top of my head (like single tacks marking the way and double tacks indicating something in the clue). You can always make your own code, just make sure to explain it in the clue. Oh, and make sure the tacks are set kind of high. Some of the ones I have seen have been set above the average person's head, and others are about eye level.

AQ groups VS FB AQ groups

You want to post on AQ and then go on fb and post about posting on AQ?

I thought that was funny too.
I'm too much of an AQ junkie to get off AQ long enough to post on FB!

But it does seem to be a growing trend. I've noticed event sign ups on FB (they are listed on AQ but also on FB, and sometimes the sign ups are just on FB). I noticed groups on FB that mimic the boards here.

I don't really understand the advantage of this. When people sign up on AQ for an event, I can push a button and get a list of all the PT's. I can't do that if they sign up on FB. If they have a letterboxing topic they can post on AQ and I can see all the recent topics here on all the boards. On FB I have to search all the different groups.

So what is the advantage of having duplicate FB groups?

This way a serious FB junkie can avoid learning how to maneuver around on AQ. I agree they miss out, but they probably don't realize it.

On the other hand, maybe they're just hiding from you. 8))

Thank you so much for the search messages box Ryan, I am amazed at how handy it makes searching for stuff! I know I'm a day late and a dollar short but I've been a little swamped lately.

I'm thinking you must have just searched for something and found it. So, what did you search for? =)

If I had to guess, some people probably like the idea of being able to post somewhere that's not within my area of influence. =) It might also have the appearance of being "friendlier," but that'll only last until the first flame war starts.

I can't keep up with all of the posts on AQ (just selected threads and boards), so I don't think I'll be adding Facebook groups to my regular reading list anytime soon. It really is a largely Tortuga free place to post! =)
